I have my opinion about the respective merits of Rust vs Swift, both being relatively new languages with interesting takes on safety, elegance and performance. What's your take on it ? Retrospectively, what would you have done differently in Swift that Rust got right, and what do you think Rust misses that you put in Swift ?
I can't wait until everything is routed over USB-C.
You don't get it. Everything will be routed through USB-C, but it will be only one protocol at a time. So you will have to carefully choose your port, cable and device that go together if you ever want Displayport, Thunderbolt, HDMI or whatever else which isn't plain USB working correctly.
But the main "problem" (if you want to consider it so) with Android is that it's a FOSS platform. Apple and Microsoft heavily strangle their respective closed platforms so that OEMs and carriers can't do anything to interfere with Apple's and Microsoft's business (aside from, in the case of Windows, pre-installing bloatware). But since anybody can legally install Android on anything, Google can't use the same kind of leverage. Well, that's a good thing, I say. It means I'm not on Google's leash.
Ubuntu is also a FOSS platform, and it has no problem updating without the PC manufacturer consent.
In fact those molecules are not life precursors. They're just remnants from a past civilization that ended in a global thermonuclear war after they elected their equivalent to Donald Trump.
Look at what happens in smartphones. The battery isn't getting much better, but the phones (for the same task) do need less power. That's in part hidden because we use them more (not just for a few phone calls) and apps are getting power-hungry, but they're far more power-efficient than before.
Incremental steps will give us cars with 1000km autonomy in a decade from now.
I heard the very same news on the radio today; except it was in France and was about French intel service.
Either it's a coincidence, or it's yet another press release begging for more power for intel services, around the world.
An experienced glider pilot has one more vairometer to use - his own posterior. One can feel speed changes in it:)
Nope. As you say it, own own posterior is an accelerometer, measuring the speed changes, NOT a variiometer, measuring the speed i.e. the position change. You're one derivative wrong.
Piloting without vario is easy to do when you have visual cues around to help assessing your vertical speed, but when higher up in the sky it's really difficult to tell the difference between a steady +1m/s and -1m/s. (World class paraglider competition pilot here, and from the few flights I did in sailplane it's not much different).
Definitely for ! But that's technical and doesn't mess with the behavior of the site. Be careful if your tweak the modding system, which is the very soul of slashdot.
As for stories, the biggest complaints people have are 1) the story is inappropriate (not something Slashdotters are generally interested in, something that seems like shameless advertising disguised as a story, etc
I for one enjoy the slashvertisements, as long as they are clearly marked as such.
I enjoy them because of the very nature of Slashdot: lots of knowledgeable people will comment on the product and tell me why it's good/not so good, or will show better replacements, better ways of doing the same thing a simpler way, etc. That's often precious and not seen anywhere else.
Personally I'm in favour of universial basic income, provided all other benefits are removed at the same time. You get what you get, and no, that won't let you live in a decent area of a major city, there won't be any extra payout for special needs, etc.
So once you're in that "basic income" system of yours, I guess you're stuck living in some ghetto and would have no way of getting out of it.
They matter in 80% of the cell phones in the world that deploy the linux kernel.
Not really, all those phones are stuck at 3.xx. You'll have to wait for quite a long time to have 80% of all phones (or even Android phones) to reach 4.4.
That said I tend to agree with the OP on a point: allowing a piece of PHP to auto-update is a recipe for disaster. If you're not "in the biz", use a serious Linux distribution which will handle the packaging and updating for you. That what I do with Owncloud on Debian, and even if I'm a bit behind I'm sure I have a packet correctly updated, which is absolutely not the case with the upstream package. See this article for a discussion about the problem: http://lwn.net/SubscriberLink/...
Fortune of the day, just at the bottom of the /. page:
"I am more bored than you could ever possibly be. Go back to work."
(emphasis is mine)
I very much like it too. And will probably buy this one as my next phone: https://yotaphone.com/us-en/

Can you tell us more about your position at Tesla ? What exciting stuff will you do with Autopilot ?
Do you intend to open-source (parts of) it ?
One slide says "Enhanced IOs", but what kind of I/Os are there ? I hope there are GPIOs, TW, SPI, etc.
So when you just invite the good guys to help you, you will always be safe. It's like a neighborhood watch.
More like mafia watch. If you just invite them for help, you will always be safe. Otherwise ...
Forcing projects to C avoids possible bugs and unreadable code from cowboy programmers on your team using some of the more esoteric features of C++.
This ! I've been working in several embedded systems companies, and we always have avoided C++ precisely because of this.
It also is a requirement for embedded systems, which includes everything for an arduino and their bigger cousins.
(OTOH not really this, I'm seeing more high-level languages, even JS, everywhere)
France here, same problem. Thank you modern internet.

Of course, Google know how to escape the tax system in Paris !
I'm not sure the extinction of the human race would be a catastrophe for the rest of the earth ecosystem.

Add modern features like syntax highlighting for code snippets (of course make that switchable for old-time whiners).
