Inventions later than the introduction of metallurgy weren't considered inferior because they failed to use the materials at hand. Inventions that are put together by robots are no less important or imaginative than those put together by hand. Inventions that are put together in bits and bytes through software that was created at the hand of others are no less inventions than any physical widget.
Every programmer who has done something that has Not Been Done Before is an inventor. It doesn't matter one iota that the programmer didn't write vi (or Visual Basic if you prefer), and to degrade the newest inventions because they are built on the work of others is to throw all of the nature of invention throughout human history out the window.

Bitter Java

Java made me bitter right from the start. It never worked as it should (It's cross-platform! Oh wait, it's cross platform if you tweak things for the specific OSs you're going to run this under and take into account differences in the compilers. Oh yeah...it's all unstable as hell in browsers. And it might just piss off all the visitors to your webpages).
I would love it if someone would replace Java with something that worked. I'd even accept something from Microsoft.
And while I know he's a decent guy, he also tends to be a little too hard-headed for his own good (at least he ws a few years ago). I suspect that some communication here between the parties will clear up a lot of what's going on.
On the other hand, since I know Gordon to be an honest guy, I suspect that the other party is trying to screw him out of what rightfully is his.
If you search for a general term, you'll likely do ok. But, if something truly arcane happens (as happened to me this week when two of the NT machines on our network decided to start printing to network printers that weren't even set up on that computer, and Microsoft doesn't have a bug documented that appears elsewhere on Google, how can I possible believe the M$ site will give me the answers I need?
When the hell has Microsoft ever supported me? I administer 150 NT workstations, 10 Win2k workstation, 3 Win2k servers, and 2 linux boxes, and I still have to find out how to do things through Google because Microsoft's support website sucks, both for navigation and content.
If this is what they mean by support, then I'd suggest the Mac folks could do better by hiring a few net-researchers instead.
What if you asked Toyota to make a car with a joystick for steering instead of a steering wheel? Of course you can't let them leave that steering column in there, and they should probably re-engineer the driver's seat now. Is it possible? Sure. Should every car manufacturer consider alternate steering methods when designing their cars? Of course not.
Bad analogy.
If I was an auto parts manufacturer and wanted to make an alternate drop-in replacement for the steering wheel (for example) whch was 300% more effective than the one that the car manufacturer shipped by default, I could easily do it and many car users could replace theirs with the one I built. The original steering wheel would no longer be part of the car. I may void my warranty, but that's my choice.
Is there is a way right now that you could rip out IE and replace it with a browser that was 300% more effective at doing the job of IE? Who knows. The Prof. says we can...hell, Microsoft says technically they could rip out IE (after lying about it). I'm sure if the Windows API's were released we could start writing a drop-in replacement and at least have the chance of reaching that 300% mark. Sounds like a free and open (not open source) realistic way for a business model to be created.
Oh....you're new here I guess. Katz does crappy reviews of crappy movies that came out long enough ago for the reviews not to be relevant. It's his "thing".
I heard a rumour that this twit was going to review his favourite movie but was dissuaded by the other/. staff. Really, no one wanted to hear about his My Little Pony fetish.
Katz is a dork, and while he's on staff I won't become a member here. There's no way my cash is going to pay for this kind of pap.
What exactly prevents you from using VNC for more than remote admin? I use TightVNC and am able to run everything I need over it. Sure, I'm not going to play a FPS over it, but that doesn't appear to be what he wants either.
What I posted had nothing to do with the charges at all. It had everything to do with the fact that 'sk8' was being an idiot in court, which is a dangerous place to be an idiot.
And if 'Kickstart' had been available, I wouldn't have switched to 'Kickstart70'. And if you had any balls you'd post non-anonymously.
What a GOOD parent would do is admit that his kid is being an asstard but still defend his rights. The two are not mutually exclusive. Quite simply, 'sk8' (which must be the #1 dumbass nickname), is in waaay over his head, and doesn't have the good sense to realize it. All the while his father makes excuses for his kid's behaviour as "defending his rights". Well, that method of defending his rights will get 'sk8' put in jail for a long time.
When the justice system nabs you, they have all the power. Insults, accusations, excuse-making (ie. the ALLCAPS defense) serve no purpose other than to make the representatives of the justice system angry. At no point in this process are these representatives going to say, "Oh...I guess you are right. We'll just let you go now. Sorry" and to expect that (which this child seems to be doing), is lunacy or at the very absolute least a mindboggling lack of wisdom.
To hear his father follow that same line of thought shows how the child learned it. There is nothing preventing a father from loving a child, but that doesn't mean a father has to love the childs actions.
These Eloi, according to the (apparently) lone English speaking person outside of Dr. Hartdigen, all learn English in their childhood as a tradition. You learn an apparently long-dead language for no reason at all? That's like me teaching my 3 year old son Sanskrit because I have some spare time.
...of the rights of the corporation vs. the rights of the citizens. I suspect all of us who don't use CDs for anything other than backing up our software or our machines will be penalized with the use of levy, taxes and fines on the sales of CDs (to fund this stupidity).
Wouldn't it be far better to leave this in the hands of the corporation, who if they care about copying will put copy-protection measures into place? And if the copy protection measures go too far and the citizens don't buy - well, that's the way a free, open market works!
Now...if I could convince someone to hack improved window placement so things would stay where I want them without me having to move them all the time, I'd be a happy camper.
With license v6 by M$, if you install it on your network, and run any other M$ product on that network (even back to Win 3.1), then the license is upgraded to v6 for all of those machines. Where is the boundary? If I do a VPN across the internet to another machine on another LAN, does that mysterious license switch occur? If I am globally connected to many machines on the internet, does the license switch occur on all of these machines?

Can you call it patent infringement after the patent is filed? Well, duh...you certainly couldn't call it patent infringement before that, could you.

It's unfortunate that Slashdot mods and most Slashdot people with points to spend are completely unable to laugh at themselves and mod this up a ways.
