Once again, nobody [who knows jack about politics] ever said the US was a democracy. It's a democratic republic, and those old white men are the ones the average person in this country elected to represent them. My genuine suggestion for you is to leave the country. I certainly plan to.

Well, in the grand old days of radio it used to be pretty heavily tilted in favour of advertising, as opposed to record sales and such. It's definitely a different business model, and it's actually more top-down and less user-generated. Users can't even pick what they want to buy, they just have to buy what's being played.
However, with the current state of technology, internet radio is becoming entirely viable as a mass-market revenue stream. This means that there will be just as much choice as with file-sharing (they can offer and support hundreds of channels and still advertise on all of them), while the artists get paid regularly.
The next problem is to figure out how to get people not to switch immediately at commercial.

Well, I don't think anyone's going to start a marketing campaign based solely on the information retrieved from blogs. However, it can act as a nice supplement to other information one might have, in that it can 1. reinforce, 2. show a rise in popularity of a specific item, and 3. show a decline in popularity of another item.

Viral marketing is something marketing officers have been trying to tap into forever, and this might help them determine how that sort of thing works; how information and trends are passed between people.

Also, maybe they could pinpoint characteristics of market leaders, i.e. those who talk about major trends before those trends get major.

A nice sentiment from someone who is obviously not a sysadmin of any non-trivial setup, or from someone who is fortunate enough not to be overworked and have plenty of time to do one's job.

Thanks for the personal attack there, Jason. You're absolutely correct- I'm not a sysadmin at all. I can see you're bitter towards people you feel have it easier than you, but come on- you really don't know anything about me. I'm not going to defend myself to you, because this sort of personal debate is really just whining.

However, this is what default states are for. As one above user suggested, try Clean Slate. It'll essentially reset the hard drive whenever you tell it to.

Another option is to partition the drive, and only allow users access to one of them. Then, you can just wipe that one, while using the other one for the OS. You can keep a default registry, etc. so you can just replace the few things on the boot drive that the user CAN change.

I have used several other systems that use this sort of system, and they're MUCH better than the alternative. My college pays its IT people well, and we keep enough of them staffed so they rarely have to work overtime, except in the case of major emergencies.

In conclusion, don't act like all users are bad or ignorant. Just let them do what they want, and clean up after them. That's what a sysadmin is paid for: cleaning house. It's an honorable profession, and users appreciate a well-run system.

You know, there's something to be said for allowing users some degree of freedom. It's quite easy to cut off all kinds of access, but networks that have users with a wide variety of needs and interests and who can generally trust their users shouldn't do so.

At my school, we've got some computers in very public areas that are all full of restrictions, and people run into usability problems with them all the time. But on the computers in the library, users can install whatever they need. If I need to install a drawing program to help create a presentation, I should have the freedom to do so. If I want to install AIM to get files off my computer remotely or send myself information, I should be able to do this. These are important user rights in a computing age.

As such, it is important to monitor what is being placed on computers, but it is foolish to restrict everything outright.

Second, yes, people sit in front of computers more often now than they used to, but I think it's less a "sedentary lifestyle" and more a "productive lifestyle." People sit at desks a lot longer than they used to for other reasons, too. I've got Ibanking friends who are at work, at their desks, for at least 16 hours every day, except when they have occasional presentations. They're being productive, not sedentary.

Sure, PS2 is ahead because of it's first-mover advantage, but that's has to do primarily with the quantity of games it offers. Moreover, nintendo only appeals to people who already like nintendo! You can't get a 15 year old who never played the original marios and metroid interested in game cube, because they're all too cutesy. Halo, a dearth of sports games, and a lot of FPS games are much more marketable. It's all about the games- the fact that the game cube is moderately inferior to the xbox doesn't hold it back. Nor does the fact that the PS2 is very inferior to both, and more expensive than the cube hold IT back, because it has GAMES.
