    I do see a number of Surface machines in my local university library.

    So that is where they all went!

    Here in the UK, I have only seen them in PC World.

    You are omitting the main reason: CAPITALISM

    Windows is for profit and thus hurling money into advertising, and funding massive amounts of illegal anti-competitive activity are very profitable.

    Linux is not for profit, and there corrupt contracts or EULAs, is no big spend on advertising, and no years of illegal and criminal underhand deviousness, and without data-slurping, no backhanded subsidising of bloatware filled laptops, or bribing software providers not to support the competition.

    If Joe public and his boss understood the extent to which they are being stiffed, things might be different.

    As my aged grandmother used to say "the adverts speak very highly of it, dear" (which, as usual, and was her intentional sarcastic implication, suggests that no one else does, unless bribed).

    Replacement parts for older cars are only available for as long as stock lasts

    In Europe, replacement parts have to be available for 7 years. Otherwise you don't get to sell the car here at all. (Probably why some models are not sold here).

    Most of us are shocked that the same rule does not automatically apply to all electronics. The objective is to reduce land fill.

    You click the bit that says "There are [security] updates available for you. Do you want to install them?

    [Now] or [Later]"

    So you don't have to do it immediately, if it might be inconvenient.

    There are settings which allow you to choose how often and when the checks are done, and whether download and install are connected or not, but the defaults are fine for most people.

    I suspect not. They are aliens from a planet where they breathe methane and communicate at 11GHz.

    Otherwise they would know that "slim, bendable, metal, trendy" are NOT an attractive features in phones, and "plastic, waterproof, long battery life and standards compliant" are.

    I dont trust the car manufacturers with any data at all, not just mileage claims and pollution ratings.

    I was bitterly disappointed to find Ford Galaxies no longer look like aircraft carriers and have 7 litre engines, despite being "500" to compete with the Fiat 500, and the Fiat 500 is now 1300cc, and not 500cc.

    The manufacturers are a dishonest as the salesmen.

  15. I believe we started sending signals at or near 11GHz in about 1940, so the wait may be less than you think, although I wont be around personally to hear the reply, some of you may be.

    My bet is its the collective leakage from all their microwave ovens when they all warmed their dinners in the break in the superbowl.

    I think you will find Java software is widely abused - usually with a wide variety of unprintable expletives.

    In the days before Cray started his own company, CDC computers used to run one Fortran compiler for debugging (cos you could understand the error messages) and another to produce the working code (cos it ran massive faster).

    So your CFO and auditor can read it?

    I don't think you understand the point of COBOL, which is "while it is very long-winded and a struggle to write, it is possible for lay people to read, and (at least the evidence suggests) maintain 50 year old code after the original author has died".

    If you write COBOL, you probably spend two days reading the background info and requirements docs for every ten minutes you spend writing code anyway.

    Good luck getting an accountant to understand 50 year old Java.

    News is very much about the headlines and near real time information.

    This is why the news sites are a load of piss.

    If they had actual well-informed, readable articles for people with more attention span than a goldfish, people might value them more than snippets, but since snippets is all they have, they are reaping the consequences.

    You can buy permanent DVD/Bluray disks now that last more than 1000+ years.

    And if they don't, when the 1,000 years is up, you get your money back.

    I have read back tapes I wrote myself after 30 years. I cant read backup CDs from 5 years ago, and I live in London, so I can't blame the California weather..

    optical media is great because it is Read Only. using a USB flash drive or hard drive is risky because it can get infected with something and then transferred.

    I use tape for backup/archive, but to send CNC data to the factory, I use CDs. That way, they cannot claim I sent them something else. Anyway, if you sent them USB sticks/SD cards, they would probably lose them because they are too small (its a FACTORY).

    Android phone can be bought for $100

    My THL6C cost GBP36 (less than $50) and has dual sims, latest Android (MegaPlotz or whatever its called, as of July) great reception, clear voice, exchangeable battery, SD card, etc. Camera is a bit naff. Does the job though. My family bought 6 of these, and 5 are still working. The other was lost in the airport, and may be still working I don't know.

    One of us owns an Apple of some sort. It is still working on the rare occasions when the battery is not flat.

    Reliable reliability data is hard to come by, and this ain't it!
