  1. I agree, and I'm 21... on Tech Geezers vs. Young Bloods · · Score: 1

Sad isn't it. I'm only 21 yet I feel a technology divide with the younger generation. I cut my teeth on IRQ conflicts in the DOS days. While I can't build a tranciever from scratch without instructions, I do my own volt-mod soldering in order to overclock my computers even further. I am a technology enthusiast in the purest form. I keep up with everything from nanotech to cellphones to the newest processor fabrication techniques. The thing is, I don't really take advantage of the technology I know exists. I have a cell phone(Moto V551, upgrading to a ROKR), no land line, but I don't play games or text unless I feel texting would be better than a voicemail. I average about 5 texts per month and 300 peak minutes per month. At work I don't leave people voicemails, I walk upstairs and talk to them face to face. Partly because this ensures that I am not ignored by the guy talking with me on the phone, talking to a coworker, and sending an e-mail all at the same time.

What amazes my the most is the total lack of interest kids have in how their computer works. Most kids who call themselves hardcore gamers these days don't even know what an AGP Slot is much less an Interrupt. I guess we have Dell to thank.

Maybe I'm old fashioned, or maybe I'm just old. The thing is, I'm the one they come to when they have computer problems and I'm the one who explains why this service does not work on that particular model of cell phone, and why Cingular has better coverage in this area because they have 850MHz/1900MHz towers whereas T-Mobile only uses 1900MHz towers.

How about requiring that every computer be hooked up through a NAT device? It would kill casual gaming and the only people that would do a DMZ are more than likely the ones that are smart enough to have everything patched. This would stop the spread of viruses as every few pcs would be effectively isolated from the lan. It would also kill campus filesharing which I can guess slows down the network considerably.

Enforcement is simple, they bring the NAT to you and you write down the MAC address, and do MAC filtering. This isn't feasable for this semester, get the Powers that Be in with this and make it a requirement for next semester.

is how a video card can cost upwards of $400, and a processor AND motherboard that run faster and involve more R&D can cost less than that combined.

You are comparing the wrong end of the spectrum. A 6800GT or X800Pro is more akin to an A64 3800+. With a 6800U or X800XT being the AMD64 FX class.

You forget that with CPUs there are performance tiers, and you pay the difference. These budget cards at $200 are more suitable for your Athlon 3200+/P4 3GHz people. The key is to always skip a generation. I went from a Voodoo Banshee to a TNT2 to a GF2 to a Radeon 7000 to a Radeon 9700. Not bad when you consider things. I've owned FIVE 3d accelerated video cards for my main computer in the past six or so years. So I have spent a total of $850 on video cards in the past six years. That is an average of $170 per card; $141 per year. My next card will most likely be a 6600GT or a 6800GT, depending on the pricing 6-12 months from now.

Now I can tell you that I have sent MUCH more on processors and motherboards over the years than on GPUs. My latest upgrade alone was over $300 for the motherboard and CPU and it was just a modest upgrade($140 P4C800 Deluxe and $160 P4 2.66B, for overclocking to 3.2GHz).

This won't lead to constantly lowered pay until you are basically working for free, it means you will work the shift for always a minimum of 90% of the market rate. I would venture to guess that the 90% rate is probably more than the standard hour rate. I see it as a win-win both for the nurses and for the hospital.
