The docs say I have to setup a skins dir in/usr/local/share... But they don't say anything about the skin configfile... What is he format of this file, and where does it go?

Put a simpler version of the client. Less GUI, no search monitoring, no uploads, etc. You'd be surprised how much you can cut down. No options screen, no network monitoring, etc...
On my video card and monitor, sometimes when I switch virtural consoles, X crashes; and X also sometimes crashes as it comes back up... I'd give details, but I can't remember them...
