this demo went well I see...on the other hand. There are plenty of ways this is different from an actual broadcast situation,

They used a studio deck wired straight to the projector, so the signal did not have to go over the air and thus began in better shape.

They used their own equipment, thus you had no idea what specs (resolution, etc.) they were using. After all, HD has resolutions from 480 to 1080 lines, progressive and/or interlaced.

This kind of proprietary technology is one more way corporations are attempting to control the internet. They move from open standards to ones they design. I am surprised that it was not mentioned in the article, for if Microsoft is successful with .NET, we will be forced to use their proprietary technology to access resources that previously were open (as they recently did with the msn gaming zone and has been done for a while with hotmail, etc.) Though most sites that use .NET and passport are MS sites, if it spreads beyond that...::shudders::

Funding cuts that make it impossible to do research should not be made, since this is a research platform, after all. If they cut funding to this, just like they did with DS1 (story earlier today), then the entire scientific commmunity is going to be pissed. What is the point of putting up a multi-billion dollar space station if not to do something more than have it just sit there, with no experiments being done? That ticking sound is the time before this thing plunges into the ocean years from now. the only question is "what do we do with it until then?"
