  1. Patriot Box Office 1080p Media Player on Ask Slashdot: Suggestions For a Simple Media Server? · · Score: 1

I have used WD live (or was mine a WD tv?) units and love them, have have not used them in a couple years and can’t remember if they even had a Ethernet port on mine. I reach for my Patriot Box Office 1080p High-Definition Media Player PCMPBO25 all the time now. The Patriot will connect right to my Linux Samba server and allow me to map drives to windows share, etc. You can also install a HDD inside the unit or an external bluray player/drive. It will seems to play anything. I have noticed some .m4v files have sound issues (No sound) as when I created the mk4 file I used AC3 Passthru or DTS Passthru and not sure why they don’t work. but work fine on my pc. The videos play fine. I had to rerun handbrake and use AC3 (faac or ffmeg) codec setting and then sound was fine. It could just be my cheap receiver having issues. Only issue I’ve seen is the lack of updates. I don’t think I’ve seen an update in over a year or 2 now.. I have had the unit maybe 3 or so years also..

I am going on 9 years now as a T-Mobile customer. In the last 9 years, I've never had a call drop other than from my service being a little weak in my basement. My bill is about $60 ($39 was my original bill, plus$10 for phone and text add-on plan plus internet access and taxes, etc brings it to about $60) a month for unlimited calling and text plus (T-Mobile - T-Mobile) unlimited g2 internet access. I have not had a contract in years also and they never push for me to get one. Over the last 9years, I've only called customer service twice, once was because I wanted to add an international plan and another was to find out how to remove one of my phones from another plan and add 2 more new a new plan. Over the last 9 years I've never paid my bill on time and never seen a nasty email, letter or late fee, They actually added on 200mins to my plan for being a loyal customer. I only bought 2 cell phones from them over the years, One was the original Nokia they gave to me when I first got my phone and the other was a Samsung that I paid too much for, I still have both phones, but don't use them anymore. I bought 2 unlocked Palm 680's over the years (One I dropped in the pool and it still worked (still works now) and the other is used as my GPS unit now with a tomtom memory card) and used them on their network with no issues, data plan worked with them, was able to text, sms, IM and send pictures, there website always said I had an unsupported phone, but big deal. I then bought a palm Centro last year and didn't like it as much so bought a used unlocked G1 and give my girlfriend (a big mac fan) the Centro as she loved the phones more then the Iphone. A friend of mine bought a Iphone g3 and has been not happy with it at all. He told me after each software upgrade is has become less stable and slow. I hope the sale does not happy, Lots of my friends also have there fingers crossed that it does not.

I have a AMD 64 3000 with 1 gig memory and a Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 Conroe 2.4GHz . The Core 2 seems a lot slower on a lot of things, required me to get a bigger power supply and seems to need a hell of a lot more cooling.. I also spent a hell of a lot more money on the stupid intel cpu ($300+) then I did for my $150 (at the time) AMD 64 cpu.. I also have a Laptop with a Core 2 Duo in it. Its ok. But still use my AMD for everything. Yes I am more of a AMD fan boy, But I do have both and always have, just like I have Linux, XP , Solaris and a MAc at home.. This if anyting is not making be upgrade my system to the latest AMD, Its because I have not needed to upgrade! Nothing has required me too.

  21. RE: Can Developers Work in a 'Locked-Down' Env on Can Developers Work in a 'Locked-Down' Environment? · · Score: 1

Its next to impossible to lock down a network and still work when you are always uninstalling software and reinstalling software. Even for Support people its next to impossible. You end up having to put the user on hold, Find an IT person to come and login as admin and have them uninstall or do other things all while the customer/user is on hold. Its a very bad pratice to do. Some companys only have 1 IT person in house and a lot of times they will be on vaction and then your in trouble because you can't do anything. Companys should think ahead and maybe subnet different departments and give devo/tech emloyee's domain admin rights on a subnet as where sales and HR employee's really don't need to install, remove and do regedit stuff can be locked down more. IT will tell you its not really a problem as they can give you local admin rights on your machine, But what happens when you need to goto another machine to test or install. Its also a real pain to close all your applications and login as a local machine user just to do a 1 sec install/remove or regedit. I do Unix Admin and PC work myself part time so I know the pressure some IT people feel.
