    The pinky toe I understand, but the pinky? However will I touch-type, or learn to play the piano? I can't see evolution doing away with fingers. Quite the opposite.

    No, going to base 12 would be much more sensible (Who counts on their toes, anyway?).

    Though water does freeze at different temperatures depending on the atmospheric pressure.

    Thanks! The LS855 looks like the only one that's a conventional motherboard (not mini-ITX, but with AGP/PCI slots and multiple memory slots) but no sites seem to sell it or offer prices.

    Right! I'll just go buy a Pentium M and plug it into my socket 478 motherboard! Oh wait, last time I checked, I could only buy it as a laptop (usually as a "Centrino"). Unless things have changed? Any links to a desktop system, or components that can *easily* be placed in one, would be appreciated.

    There are other reasons for using silver thermal paste and "overclocking" products than just overclocking. I have a layer of arctic silver with a masive copper heatsink, but I don't overclock. Instead, I have the cpu cooled by a 120mm fan running nice and quiet on minimum speed. I also have a Zalman cooler on my video card. Both of these make my computer's noise level much less distracting than the jet engine it was before.

    Right. Or maybe, just maybe, their work was merely copied, and they're just using this leak as an excuse to explain why they haven't finished Half Life 2. Ooh, it might make it easier to cheat on online games? Tweaking some lines of code to obfuscate the online mode might take, oh, a few days.

    Hmm... would it be possible to have two keys? One would be your regular key, and the other would open up an innocent but convincing (eg, containing "safe" emails, installed legal programs, etc.) file system. It might be possible to tell that there is other stuff if a certain portion of the disk is used, but if the encrypted disk was 100% full (with blank space being "encrypted" as random junk, it might be impossible to tell.

    Yeah, MEPIS is great. I replaced my Knoppix (also Debian-based) partition with it. Among other things, it's easier to install and the programs on the menu actually have icons and descriptions.

    My only complaint is that there is no option (at least that I could see) to install the second disk automatically - so if you have a good connection, it's better to just download the first disk and use apt-get for any other programs than downloading and burning both disks.

    Eww, why did you buy a digital camera that needs a base station? Even just an internal lithium battery is a bad idea. NIMH are much better and easier to replace, and cameras that run on a set of 4 tend to get much longer battery life than other cameras. (Check out the Canon A70 at the bottom of the page.)

    Of course, that wouldn't be a problem if they had a standardized battery, would it? And since the internal cells are pretty much the same, they wouldn't save all that much money by making a standard external form. No, it's more profitable to either gouge you on the battery or force you to upgrade...

    True, but I don't remember any class-action suit over the GeForce "4" MX. (Which, of course, was an overclocked GeForce 2 with DDR memory - it did not have a GeForce 4 core.)

    The term for a U.S. president is 4 years, right? So he was about 18% into his presidency. Would he be responsible if it were 25%? 50%? When?

    Any TV-out is generally pretty crummy with a regular TV, but supposedly this will have component video output (better than S-video) capable of HDTV, which would look much nicer. Also, hopefully this thing will be capable of playing MPEG4 (including Xvid and all of the DivX codecs) - though they didn't mention it.

    Actually, Celebrex (celecoxib) is more potent than ibuprofen - a typical dosage of Celebrex for arthritis might be one or two 200mg capsules a day, while ibuprofen dosages range from 300-800 mg, three to four times a day, up to 3200mg. But potency doesn't mean much. The important thing is that the COX-2 inhibitors (Celebrex, Vioxx (rofecoxib), Bextra (valdecoxib)) are relatively far less potent at inhibiting COX-1, which (among other things) is involved in making prostaglandins that stimulate mucus and bicarbonate secretion in the stomach. Since GI damage and ulcers are usually the dosage-limiting side-effects of NSAIDs, COX-2 inhibitors can produce a level of pain and inflammation relief that may not be possible in some people with other NSAIDs.

    The "newer and more expensive" thing is most obvious in cardiovascular meds. Hydrochlorothiazide (which costs a few dollars a year) and aspirin versus outrageously expensive Plavix (half a million pounds per event prevented, whee) and crap like Adalat.

    The carcinogenic effects do take a long time to produce damage, but the cardiovascular effects do not. While the lifestyle benefit may outweigh the physical damage for some people with serious mental problems such as schizophrenia, nicotine is still toxic.

    Btw, do these positive effects for a 50 or 60 year old include having a stroke?

    Yeah, iron absorption is much higher from breast milk. Also, it contains IgA (secreted antibodies from the mother).
