Republican or democrat, the government's job is to protect and serve the people. Regardless of how-incredibly-much they've overstepped that boundary, this definitely falls into that definition.
Spam Assassin was deliberately marketing a product that did not do what it advertised to do. That is false advertising, and depending on the specific claims, probably fraud though IANAL, and IMBTOOMA (I may be talking out of my ass).
At any rate, I think this is clearly a case of people being scammed, and the government has a responsibility to interject.
That's the two years every unemployed IT person drank themselves into a stupor following the bubble-burst... most are still waiting to see if we reelect W. next year.
I read about a quarter of this and my eyes just glazed over...
Off-topic, I guess, but I hate these teen shows... all of them. I'm their target demographic (age-wise) and I cannot understand how people relate to these damned things. I mean, I know TV is about living vicariously through fake people with lives far more interesting than your own pathetic, hollow shell of an existence, but these things read worse than soap operas. And all the actors are late-30's portraying 16-18 year-olds... I just find that a little weird. Sorry for the pointless rant, but perhaps someone could enlighten me as to what the appeal of these things is?
Do you have a driver's license? Do you remember what the test was like? All it proves you're "worthy" of is driving through an empty parking lot for four minutes without flipping the damned car. At least in Florida that's all it is (and judging by the driver's I've encountered across the rest of the US, similar to most other states).
granted, meteorology is the one field where you can be wrong 100% of the time and still get paid, but...
I'd imagine tracking a particular low pressure system is more difficult than computing pre-observed FACTS about weather patterns and drawing conclusions thereof. They're not talking about your five-day forecast highs and lows, but rather a global change in atmospheric temperature. Now granted, the article bases this on the presumption that CO2 levels will double in this time period, which may not necessarily be true, but using that as a premise, I'd say this is more reliable than your local weatherperson's "prediction" of the weather.
Lets just say that people aren't nice to them, ie, pressing as hard as they can on the screen to make 'cool' lcd effects, hitting the screens hard, drawing on them with pen, pushing them over, etc etc.
Um... third year of elementary school? Else your college is filled with savages.
... Yeah, it probably was. But that's a bad example. Even with the taxation, the tea was cheaper than they could've gotten elsewhere. So the whole thing was anger and mob mentality towards something they didn't fully understand-- actually, I guess that's a pretty good example...
Revolution doesn't mean petty theft (or piracy, or multimedia duplication or whatever you want to call it) for your own benefit. You're not changing anything. You're not even making a statement. If you don't agree with the RIAA/MPAA, fine; go start your own record label/movie studio and give your music/films away for free. That's a statement, and that's change. But don't renege on the social contract (not in the Rousseau sense of the term) to which you're bound just because you don't have to. That's dishonorable.
See, I just don't fucking get this. You are basically denying the premise of capitalism with this attitude. If you don't put money into the movie/music/doughnut industry, society and capitalism fail to perpetuate, and the system crumbles. This is a "big picture" scenario, not based on your particular case alone.
If you intend to enjoy the fruits of our society/social system, why do you not feel obligated to abide by its rules and laws? That in itself makes you a not-good person, in my opinion. You feel really bad about the disaster in Asia? Have you donated any money to a relief fund (whatever you could afford as a college student)? I'd venture to say no. Bleeding hearts don't get much done, except self-delusion that they're so concerned with the world's problems.
And before I get a hundred posts about how messed up our system is: I know. I support change. Drastic change. Like, revolutionary change. But the fact remains that while I choose to be a member of this society, and while I choose to partake in its distractions and pleasures, I respect its rules and laws. This is the pretense of a society. Take it or leave it.

When does a child grow out of that, though?
I mean, it's nice to preserve the innocence of the youth, but honestly, right now I don't think the world needs any more people running around, oblivious to the harsh realities of our current state of existence.
I'm not trying to say that all the problems in the world stem from Christmas and/or belief in Santa Claus, but when so many people are so willing to remain ignorant to all the war, poverty, disease, etc. in the world, should we really be encouraging this behavior? And I'm not suggesting we tell little Timmy and Sara that everyday, 29,000+ children die of preventable causes, but at the same time we shouldn't be telling them that all the toys they receive to keep them blissfully unaware of the hardships of life came from some make-believe man who rewards children who eat their vegetables and obey their parents.
A child's innocence is precious, only because we know it won't last in today's world. I don't think we should take it away from them, but I do believe we should ground their foundations in reality.
Well, it's unfortunate to hear this. Winamp was hands-down my favorite audio player; clean, simple interface, good quality (in terms of the EQ), and the Media Library was nice in the newer versions.
In truth, I started writing this post to say WMP wasn't all that bad, but the more I think about it, the more I remember why I never use it except for video playback: increasingly bloated (built-in "Shop Online" stuff that you can't disable), all the "Album Info" stuff assumes you don't already legitimately own the music ("Buy NOW!" all over the place), the Equalizer is subpar, and most annoyingly, the playlist control SUCKS! Loading up about 2000 tracks and setting it to random play seems to make WMP's head asplode; if you manually move forward a track or two, it either picks a completely new order for the songs, or will repeat a portion of the playlist that it's already played.
I guess I'm glad the Nullsoft team left us with a solid release before they left (actually, Winamp craps out on me on occasion, but not too often), and I wish them the best in their future ventures.
However it is that I came to acquire this bread, I fucking earned it. That's the way it is in a capitalistic society; did you grow your own couch? No. You exchanged a good or service for it (with currency as the intermediary). So apparently, I must have done something that society deemed worthy enough to give me an abundance of bread. You have no claim to it just because you are part of the same society that gave it to me of their own volition, and because you feel entitled to it.
As a side note, I have no bread, but if I did, I'm the kind of person who would give it away to those who didn't have any bread.
Not an exact cite right now (I'm at work), but it came from the official Microsoft Corp. autobiography they released on their 25th anniversary (the name escapes me now, too, damnit).
Secondly, that's a pretty fucking hostile response to a relatively simple statement. If you'd read the few posts I've made before, you'd see that I'm a Microsoft supporter, so I'm not spreading FUD or "Bill Gate$ is teh gay!" bullshit. It was just an amusing tidbit, posted because I'm bored, not meant to have any great sociopolitical impact.
Also, if you were to analyze Microsoft's strategy in that timeframe, you would see that this is a valid point. Microsoft was focusing a good amount of its resources on its "Microsoft Home" division, and was releasing multimedia content on CDs like there was no tomorrow. It wasn't until Netscape's widespread adoption, about a year after Win95's launch, that Microsoft ramped up development on IE and their web-based content.
Actually, what's really funny about that prediction is that in 94/95 (just before the release of Win95), Mr. Gates predicted that the Internet would be a passing fad, and that the future was in CD-ROMs.
cue Homer Simpson's "The Internet? Is that thing still around?"
Critical updates are reserved for security patches and service packs. The only instance I recall of something else listed under "critical updates" was WMP9 under win98se, because the media player included with it had a major security hole. And although they did snake DRM into one of their security updates for WMP, that doesn't constitute pushing one of their products using Automatic Updates.
If you want to criticize Microsoft for their lackluster security, or for issues you have with their software's functionality, have at it, Hoss. But everyone thinks Microsoft is this inherently evil corporation intent on literally taking over the world, simply because they use their products to promote their other products. Holy fucking shit. God forbid that should ever happen with any other company.
Yes, Microsoft has a dominant marketshare, and it may seem... unfair --for lack of a better word-- that they push their products over their competitors' products using this position. But they have never (to my knowledge) actually broken one of the antitrust laws; the whole case was merely that they could if they wanted to, and given some of their previous actions, they might.

I had a Nomad as well. It dropped from 2.5 feet, and the headphone jack broke. The hard drive started clicking, too.
The limited experience I've had with the iPod gives the impression that it's just a better-built product. The interface was nice. But damned if I'd spend as much as they're asking for it; not because it's not worth it, just because I'm poor:)
It's not a question of humanity or compassion; were I presented with the families of the victims, I wouldn't point and laugh at their misfortune; rather, I would sympathize with their loss and do what I could to console them.
Death is not tragic. The unlived life and the pain it brings to loved ones is. However, a joke like this doesn't belittle that fact at all.
My point was simply that people don't get all up in arms about the thousands of other people who die everyday, why should they for the publicized ones? Is the death of these people somehow more unjust than the children who are born into poverty and die of disease or malnourishment? In fact, I'll be so bold as to say that it's more humanitarian to not be broken up about an accident (tragic as it may be) and be more upset by the sociological problems plaguing our planet that are cause for countless people to die everyday.
I don't know; I mean, obviously if someone close to me was affected by something like this, I would probably not take it so lightly. And I certainly hope no one affected by the accident is reading this thread and crying their eyes out. But looking at it objectively, I don't see anything wrong with a harmless joke.
Was it really necessary to make a joke at their expense (and, rather sickeningly, to mod it up to +5 as well)?
Yes, yes it was.
I'm sorry, but I've never understood how people get upset when people make light of a situation like this. I mean, yeah, it's tragic, I guess, that we lost 89 people in a plane crash. 89 people. Out of 6.3 billion. Will we ever recover?
And this is certainly not meant to devalue human life; I believe all life is sacred, and understnand that these people had families and loved ones and whatnot. But to make such an issue out of something like this-- as if they were the only 89 people to die today, because society's perfect, and no one dies from violence, starvation, disease, or any other cause except for Russian plane crashes...
I'm sorry, I don't know where that came from. It just really bothers me. Feel free to mod me down...
That's why all my lyrical snippets were ending up in crappy pop-punk songs...
And here I thought I shared the same angst as Good Charlotte... oh cold, cruel life.
