We might disagree about what comments get modded up, but I think you can't lose sight of the fact that the turd-tossers get modded way down, and they stay down. That's what makes Slashdot readable.
I am abstaining from the blackout because I think it is fundamentally misguided.
I like the Slashdot moderation system. It is the best system I've seen for handling the turd-tossers who want to ruin resources like Slashdot. They are not prevented from tossing their turds, they just get modded down to -1. Anyone who wants to examine their faecal projectiles can browse the comments at -1. (Have you tried that lately? Can you imagine trying to read a discusssion if you couldn't block that shit?)
I'm going to have to post the rules for Slashtard Bingo someday, since I'm the only person who knows them.

I think what Knuth means by "deep algorithm" is one that seems fundamental, something that tells us about the nature of reality, not necessarily something that is useful.
We see this all the time on the web... someone builds something incredibly valuable, and a bunch of assholes try to bury it in shit, for laughs. Think Slashdot and its persistent trolls. Normally I'm an anarchist, but I'm against the turd-tossers when it comes to things like this.
Extra points for knowing the word "ABORTIFACIENT." More points yet for spelling it correctly.
A billion Chinese with PCs and internet access? Uh-uh. Most Chinese can barely afford their daily bowl of rice. A little rat meat is a luxury.
Scientist: Sorry, I shouldn't have stopped for that haircut.
Marge: There's a man here and he wants to help you!
Homer: Is it Batman?
Marge: No, he's a scientist.
Homer: Batman is a scientist.
OK. now I understand. I don't think I can comment on the kuro5hin mod scheme, because I haven't studied it long enough, maybe it is better than ./
I can't read kuro5hin because the articles suck so much.

You think that's crazy, how about this one?
> there next generation
THEIR next generation.
Don't they teach their/there/they're in school anymore? Must be dumbing down the curriculum.
>I've heard that NASA spent 2 years developing a pen capable of writing in 0g. The russians used a pencil.
Not really. Some pen manufacturer invented and produced the pen at their own cost, and offered it to NASA.
Why don't you try one of my monkeys, they're milder.
It's spelled "scrotum."
There have to be five articles a week on Slashdot about some schlub who got some money from a spammer or telemarketer! Give it a rest already!
>SLC is pretty damned "major" if you ask me.
I would agree with you, but I've actually seen SLC.
Well, fuck you very much!
When you get to be my age, everything is stupid. Which is 37, in about an hour and one minute.
Irie, mon. Grytpype is toking a marley right... now! Makes Slashdot much more readable, don't you know.
Maybe Teoma could just link to the Google cache.
Totally nonsensical reference to the DMCA.

My favorite dirty NetHack message:
"The nymph is covered with your goo!"
To get this you have to polymorph yourself in to an ochre jelly and attack a nymph.
ROFL!
Totally non-sequitur reference to DMCA! Yay!
