    Ask Pat Robertson

    March 25, 2002

QUESTION: Over five years ago I experimented with other men sexually. Will I still go to heaven if I now believe in Jesus?

PAT ANSWERS: There's something that people need to understand and I want to make it very clear. There are certain sins that can go on to heaven: pride, envy, arrogance and slander. They can attach to your spirit. Jesus said out of the heart of man come certain things -- blasphemy and lust and so forth. But the bodies we have are going to die. And when they die, we will be like the angels. We will neither marry or be given in marriage and all of the sexual urges will be taken away. What I am trying to say is that the body that you have you are going to leave behind. If you come to Jesus Christ, He has forgiven you of your sin. What you did was wrong. Confess it to the Lord and say this is wrong. It is something else to say I am going to justify it, and whether the Bible says it is good or bad, I am going to keep on doing it. God says your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit and we need to behave that way. Nevertheless, God also remembers that you are made out of dust and He remembers who you are and what you are. Of course He will forgive your sin. Of course you will go to heaven, if indeed you have received Jesus and have been born again by His Spirit. That's what is important. What happened before is under the blood of Jesus Christ and you need to leave it there.

    Sinful Lunch
On a recent business trip to Orlando to participate in completely godly activities like a work, trip to the Magic Kingdom and the wonderfully Christian theme park Holy Land, we discovered a sin. Sadly, sin occurs everywhere and if you are paying attention you can spot sin even in a wholesome place like Orlando.

After a wonderful church service myself and my companion decided that lunch was in order before a trip to the airport. We had it all planned out and had even practiced our journey to the airport and the car rental business the day before. During our practice run we spotted a suitable church near the airport and we decided that it was pragmatic to worship near the airport.

So off we went, bibles in hand and a prayer in our heart. Lovely service, wonderful congregation, could the day get any better? We decided that it was important that we also eat lunch near the airport so on the way out to the parking lot to board our minivan we asked "where is the nearest restaurant". We were told there is a reasonably priced establishment down the street, behind a hotel. It was called "Hooters". Not knowing what kind of restaurant this "Hooters" was we took a chance because of the colorful cartoon owl on the logo.

Inside we found the staff very friendly but somewhat scantily clad. Now it is not my place to judge these lovely young ladies but please.......cover up a little. I found it very distracting and my mind was full of clearly non-Christian thoughts. Our server was a lovely young woman who "claimed" that her current employment was very lucrative. She kind of looked a little like that singer...what's her name...... umm.....Jennifer Lopez. She had large beautiful brown eyes like Bambi. She also told us that this job provided her with better compensation than her previous employment and that it was necessary to continue exploiting her good looks to make ends meet. I will not judge her because she has the free will that God provides to make her own decisions.

So this is when I spotted the sin of the week. To my amazement people were actually bringing there entire families into this sinful restaurant. Little children, teenage boys and a grandmother. What in Gods name were these people thinking. To allow a young girl to see these fallen women in these skimpy outfits, push-up bras and the shortest of shorts. It can only lead to a continuing supply of Hooters employees. Please pray for the young souls who enter this establishment.

After our lunch of chicken wings we asked if they had any peaches for desert, they did not so we opted to save our desert appetite for the pretzels our airline would surely provide.

The moral of this story is ............. do not take young souls anywhere will they may spot sin.

    Biblical Reference:
    Zechariah, chapter 5
8: And he said, This is wickedness. And he cast it into the midst of the ephah; and he cast the weight of lead upon the mouth thereof.
9: Then lifted I up mine eyes, and looked, and, behold, there came out two women, and the wind was in their wings; for they had wings like the wings of a stork: and they lifted up the ephah between the earth and the heaven.
10: Then said I to the angel that talked with me, Whither do these bear the ephah?

Letter of the CC of the Romanian Communist Party Proposing the Improvement of the Warsaw Treaty Organization and the Democratization of its activity

We make these propositions having in mind the changes going on in the international arena and the special emphasis placed by the socialist countries on the problems of disarmament, détente and cooperation in Europe and the whole world, and on the problems of creating conditions under which it may be possible to achieve the simultaneous disbandment of NATO and the Warsaw Pact. We believe it necessary that at its forthcoming meeting, the Political Consultative Committee discuss and adopt a number of measures for the reconstruction and improvement of the leadership of the Warsaw Pact.

The Central Committee of the Romanian Communist Party makes the assessment that the current way of working in the PCC of the Warsaw pact member-states is one-sided; it is directed primarily towards the military problems, and the impression is created that the concerns of the leadership of our parties and countries are connected exclusively with these problems and have a predominantly military character.

Based on this analysis, the RCP CC wishes to consult with you on the following proposals, which it intends to put forward at the forthcoming meeting in Warsaw.

    The restructuring of the Warsaw Pact PCC in view of the withdrawal from the direction, followed until now, towards military problems; and that a PCC of the European socialist countries that is not linked to the Warsaw Pact - which has purely military aims - but ensures multilateral cooperation of our parties and states in the political and military spheres be established... The PCC should direct its activity primarily toward the appraisal and discussion of substantive issues of the construction of socialism in our countries and their interaction, socio-economic development and the enhancement of the standard of living of our peoples, the strengthening of socialist democracy, forces of peace and socialism as a whole, and in this respect, toward ensuring the defensive capability of the socialist countries;

A Military Defense Committee to be set up as a military organ to the Treaty, composed of defense ministers from each member-state who will be obliged to report to the government and the Supreme Command of the respective country.

    Ashcroft Ignores First Amendment
    by Christina E. Wells

Speaking before the Senate Judiciary Committee recently, Attorney General John Ashcroft blasted those who criticized his attempts to expand his law-enforcement powers rapidly. He claimed that his critics ``aid terrorists, for they erode our national unity, . . . diminish our resolve . . . [and] give pause to our friends.''
This comment was ill-advised and outrageous. His statement is the language of treason or sedition and should not be used lightly, especially when the accused offenses arise out of political criticism.

The Sedition Act of 1798 provided for criminal punishment of any statement (even if true) tending to bring certain government officials into disrepute. In other words, it provided for punishment of those who criticized the government.

Controversial even at the time, the act has been soundly rejected in this century as inconsistent with the First Amendment's protection of free expression.

The Supreme Court has recognized that the First Amendment, in large part, was meant to break away from the English tradition of punishing criticism of the government. In its words, ``debate on public issues should be uninhibited, robust, and wide-open, and . . . may well include vehement, caustic, and sometimes unpleasantly sharp attacks on government and public officials.''

If the First Amendment stands for anything, it is that the government cannot shut down criticism of officials discharging their public duties. Ashcroft knows this. Every law student (and a good number of undergraduates) with only a passing knowledge of constitutional law knows this. Yet, the attorney general pressed on with his statements, presumably to silence his critics.

Ashcroft has not violated his critics' First Amendment rights. Other than his ill-advised comments, there has been no official government action taken to silence his critics. But his words, spoken as the country's chief legal officer and heard by a public legitimately frightened for its safety, could (and were probably meant to) have a chilling effect on his critics. Nobody wants to appear to be disloyal or a traitor. Thus, Ashcroft's words, while not violating the letter of the law, surely violate its spirit.

Ashcroft's words also highlight his fundamental misunderstanding of the values underlying the First Amendment. If he is right, and his critics' statements aid and abet the enemy, they will do so because those words will have persuaded the American public that Ashcroft has overstepped his bounds. The power of speech to persuade is its gift. It is not an evil. This is especially true in a democratic form of government where officials serve the public; they do not rule it.

Americans do not live in a monarchy, and Ashcroft is not our king. As the ultimate rulers in our democratic form of government, we Americans have the freedom to criticize our elected or appointed representatives.

This is not just a right; it is what makes this country great.
