From the article: He also said he is cautiously optimistic that Microsoft would be able to get Restart Manager to do what they say it will if they "decide to take the time to do it right, with an emphasis on testing and quality assurance. But they must still overcome the inherent weaknesses on the Windows platform as related to file corruption, shared memory space, etc."
The article is basically what Microsoft would LIKE to do, but not what they are promising to do.
I'm picturing their clusters of thousands of computers intelligently finding new strains of viruses before they can cause any damage based on indexing they do from millions of gmail users' email.
Could be pretty. I have to imagine the thought is crossing their minds.
The US has great protections for free speech. Another poster says that it's one of the few reasons why he's proud to be from this country and I completely agree with him.
In the US to be sued for libel they basically would have to prove that you are lying for malicious reasons. If this woman lived in the US the company wouldn't even have begun going this route because it wouldn't have a leg to stand on.
Also, go read the woman's site if you haven't already. The entire website is full of "I saw this, I took pictures of that. Activa is the developer of this site."
How can it be libel if she is simply reporting what she sees? It's obvious from her tone that she has concern for her neighborhood including many sincere warnings to parents in the area about specific threats (stagnant water, pressure treated wood).
That quote can be read both ways. He's not flat out saying that File Sharing -> more petty crime. He's saying that File Sharing points at a loss of values.
Make no mistake, Mr Henderson wants you to believe that File Sharing is a cause.
Minor nitpicks to an otherwise good post. The idea of a "search engine" was obviously not a new thing but google's claim to fame was PageRank. Organizing results was a major problem at the time.
Also, I'm sure everyone knows the Google story. Marketing techniques had nothing to do with their quick popularity.
It's alot more like finding out they speak English more fluently than you do. And complaining to them about it; explaining that they need to mimic your quirks and inconsistencies because you, as an American, speak English better than they do.
I owned a copy of Diablo 2 (actually I bought both it and the expansion twice because I lost my first cds). I started a bnetd server so I could play lan games with my friends with slightly more strict item rules. In typical lan games, people would do stuff like trade items and then get them back by loading an older version of their chars.:)
In any case, my use of bnetd wasn't a case of pirating at all. Everyone that used it owned a copy of the game. Disbelieve me if you want, but that's why that whole case angered me.
Disagreed. Linux is not a magic bullet that fixes all security problems. User education is as important and likely more so.
Your entire point hinges on the fact that 99% of all Windows users do so with admin rights. As a standard user, they have no write acccess to the system files.
I do agree on the point about the Windows monoculture. Windows = domesticated cow.
It assumes you're a user that downloads attachments and clicks on those "Buy viagra now!" ads. It has nothing to do with going online, but with the user being stupid.
Windows has made significant strides in this department, including a half-decent firewall that is enabled by default out of the box.

GAIM is copying AIM made by AOL. (and even they didn't invent that idea)
To say OpenOffice is copying MS Office is possible, assuming you also think MS invented office suites. (HAHA)
XMMS copies WinAmp. Which is made by Nullsoft, who incidently is also owned by AOL.
Linux is copying Unix. Which I am pretty sure MS hasn't gotten around to buying yet.
I would point out that none of these cases was meant as direct competition. MS is copying Firefox for competitive reasons.
Not saying it's wrong. Just debunking your shoddy double-standard allegation.
there's also a person like me. I never purchased CDs before. I really didn't care a thing for music, I just listened to the radio.
Ever since I started downloading it from the internet, I've been exposed to new bands and new styles of music that I never would have cared about before. The end result? I buy a few cds a month now of the artists I like.
So like.. you read this article a year ago and you are still inputting this so-called "important" information into a public form? Why do I think this post isn't entirely backed by truth?
AFP can probably prove it was an AFP photo, but cannot prove Google copied it from them (and Google likely didn't). It would be useful to include metadata in the photos as to proper credit, url, and policy.
Have you actually gone to news.google.com? I'm not meaning to sound rude when I ask, but each image includes a reference to the article the image came from underneath. You can click the link and go directly to the source of the image.
I disagree with your premise that Google is in the wrong here. What they are doing is the same as they have done for millions of other websites. They are indexing and providing a brief preview. If you disagree with them in this case, you are effectively saying that Google's business model is illegal everywhere.
No, what we are talking about is a news agency with a website. Google news doesn't go to their desks and steal their stories. This is no different than any other website. If they don't like how that works, they need to limit access to their server.

Linux Journal Is Currently Unavailable Due to a Denial of Service (DoS) Attack
Sorry for any inconvenience.
HA HA.
Does this remind anyone else of the UN?

Go read your own link.
Canada follows English law for libel in which truth is a defense against libel.

I'm at a loss here as to what Activa's case is.

Free ride? You think it's free to scan books? That's a huge amount of hours spent on a project and time is about the most expensive thing you can buy.
Amazon spends nothing on researching and tracking. They're a publisher not a thinktank. I guarantee their money is spent on wages.
Mod parent down for being uninformed.
or at least the right to refuse to allow Google to exploit them in that way.

.. but sure.
Woo Mean Girls!
Yeah I have, but I'm much more likely to be tv episodes I downloaded with azureus.
Which, apparently, makes me a criminal. Isn't IP law great?

I've played WoW since beta too. I suck.

Letting a friend borrow a tape you made off tv is fair use.
