Anything that at first runs slow would be a complete non-starter. Some things take time to become mature.
Java in the past has been really slow. But Java on a mobile device. Is actually pretty fast. At least on my phone.
Android really just uses the Java language then takes the class files and converts them to it's own interpreted machine language (like rim does with their devices)
Sure Java has it's downfalls but then every single language does. The problem isn't with Java. It's where the language should be used thats the problem. Also if you check anything that is being processed in real time is either done in hardware or on top of the linux os. (either in kernel or userspace) not on top of the dalvik interpreter.
Java on a mobile device, where app's stay small is a pretty good choice. Sure c++ would work but java is fine too. Now perl would be a bad choice for a phone.
With all that said when was the last time you really looked into java? With a good jvm or compiled directly?
A cell tower can be any miles of distance away from the central office. A single central office can have a whole city or multiple cities that it covers.
Just because power is out in one town does not mean it would be off in another where that office is located. Even if the power was off where the central office is the equipment there is power backed up. Afterall it's providing service for a large area.
If power goes out in one town and takes out the towers for that town it's annoying, But nothing like having the whole network down.
All telecom equipment is made to be easily backup powered. Running off of 48 volts DC.
The generators are large and bolted to the concrete.
They arn't going to be looted. Then a thief would have to know how to hookup a permanent installation generator. (It could be a 3 phase generator which requires a equal load. On all the phases)
Plus something worth that much would have it's own serial # So if they tried to sell it. They run the risk of getting caught.
But then I have heard stories of people trying to steal copper from live mains. Getting killed in the process.
Then it's too late because someone else thought of them or found one you missed. Then the price for a domain with a good registrar/dns provider isn't cheap. No I am not talking about some cheap godaddy like service I am talking about a dns service which can garentee that lookups won't take more then 150ms to lookup. Which in the end does make the site seem faster.
People hate domain squatters for a reason. They are annoying and stealing customers/time/resources from those people that built up their brand (their domain name). They are people that don't want to make a significant amount of effort to make money The ones that don't mind taking a penny from the 'donate a penny to the homeless shelter'.
I check what domains are free by using dig and then looking for NXDOMAIN. This helps to get around any registrar looking at their logs to see what domains people have looked up as free. (I use my own dns server so the queries go to the root servers first)
I am sick of sites being taken by domain squatters.
I thought I had a great thing with dig (or nslookup) but that might end if that data is going to be sold too. So then what's the point.
It's a political fight for our rights. The fact that you mention that politicians will use the technology they are given, says to me that when their tech fails when we figure it out, that they will just pay more money for more technology, or create new laws.
But if we get into politics and say 'hey don't use technology to spy on Americans' or 'don't break down their communication channels.' Even if they have the technology when they try to use it without the proper documentation. They get in trouble with the law. This is how it's supposed to be.
The reasons for the technology are born out of a political need. But if we keep making technology to get around the politics, then politicians will keep making laws or tech to fight us. We need to fight the laws/politics to allow us to be free to do what we want.
So a bunch of people are sharing files oh well, some corporation should have to compete with that and bring a better product to the paying people. (Studies have shown this to be an effective method to fight piracy. A better product to boot too.)
All net traffic? Why? That isn't addressing the original issue of the carrier messing with packets it shouldn't.
Instead if all traffic being encrypted along with taking lots of otherwise unused cpu and perhaps Bandwidth. Lists of ip address that are suspect will have their packets dropped at random instead.
The fight isn't on any technical means, it's more on a political means.
So in the end, encryption while a good technical work around. Is escalating the fight. This isn't what we should be fighting for, we should be fighting for common carrier status, and for the people to have more rights then corporations.
If a corporation isn't able to get customers without coercing people into it. Then that corp isn't serving the people as it should and shouldn't be propped up. (other words they need to change their business modal)
Lets make this a I want my rights back instead of a fine I will just encrypt my traffic fight.
The extensions if done right. As to take out the features that are not used.
So we have the core of the application and then if you want a feature you add it through extensions. Kinda like firefox. Whether it works out that way is another question. I haven't downloaded this release yet to know if they have made it faster.
I am with the stay with the features you have and make openoffice faster. What features are missing? None that I really use and if a feature is missing I could probably get by without it, for my needs.
I don't suggest car salesmen as a profession. I had one salesman that did do one trick I wasn't expecting. He took my license to get a copy of it before a test drive. When he came back out he had left it in the office. So I decided no matter, I will drive a block without my license. He went on his whole sales pitch and told me he sold a car that day. We get back to the lot and we walk into the storefront. Before I could ask for my license he had set a piece of paper in front of me to mull it over. I decided to see what kind of sales technique he would try to use. Turns out it was a four squire. He had written on the back of it if we could agree on a price if I would buy the car. Then wanted me to sign. I didn't and demanded for my license. He then delays getting my license and grabs the guy from the back sales office. It took me a few times of asking firmly for my license back.
I just thought that was a interesting trick to hold my license hostage.
Oh and the sales guy offered me the test drive after I told him I was interested in a truck (for work. I love cars) So I didn't lead him on. Don't let salesmen push you around. Or try to use a signature as a forcing point.
Kinda Off topic.
On Topic: If you have to explain something to someone try to aim it towards something they will understand. Don't dumb it done but give them the important points.
You Say that mostly bands use myspace. Yes some do But not all nor is it most the profiles. Most profiles are of teens or people who can't seem to spell the simple word "you". Yes it's simple three letters.
I know you're flamebait, But I am responding to you anyways. For some reason a moderator mod you up.
mp3.com before they got bought out was ten times better then myspace would ever be for bands.
Then you go on to say that slashdots users are jealous of myspace users. You do know that the reason people come to slashdot isn't so much for the articles as it is for the article sized comments. A community of Intellectuals that is grouped around technology. Myspace is a pop culture group. The arguing on/. is for refining a persons ideas. Without the opposition you'd never find holes in your idea's.
What use would adding video uploads to slashdot be? The video craze is a fad right now. (when I say fad I mean in it's current form) Sites such as youtube are working off of VC. Hence they arn't profitable. It just means some guys where able to convince some other people to give them money to setup a site, I can't see their site making money to pay the bills in the long run unless they change their bussiness plan. I could see them trying a sell this bussiness to someone else type of thing. They do have one thing that has value, a community. Which is why fox corp bought myspace. It's their demographic, a not very inteligent one. (Almost free research.)
Break the RIAA's back? What? Myspace isn't that strong when it comes to music. Most the bands on myspace are local bands trying to expand, they don't because they don't have a large appeal. (aka they suck!!!) People don't like to admit it but the riaa has some good bands along with the bad.
I know I probably made mistakes, but whatever I don't care.
One last thing. If you don't like slashdot so much. Just leave.
While this may be a good idea in concept. When something does leak, who is to blame? The person who leaked the song? what if the person has no knowledge that his copy of the media was leaked?
1. User downloads media 2. Media gets watermark for user 3. User gets infected into a botnet 4. media gets leaked
So the person that media was attached to gets the blame, instead of the people that really leaked it. After the person gets the blame they are going to get screwed even if it isn't there fault.
While this may not seem to be practical I could see it as a possibilty. I thought it was an interesting possibility.

Interix is what it used to be called, But now microsoft calls it SFU windows Services For Unix. Which is a misleading name.
Anyways. I can't tell you too many details.
To get thinking about it. In a way you could be refering to the nt api when you say the function calls got translated to win32 function calls. Since win32 is the main subsystem of NT. If that is the case it doesn't really matter which subsystem you would be talking about.
Now if you were talking about cygwin, Now that uses the underlying win32 api, and from what I know you could call both posix and win32 from within it.
Now as far as the os2 still being in windows I have no way of testing it. But I have seen dll's in the windows directory for them.
In all honesty what does voting really do when all choices suck? really.
So all those people on their high horses thinking that since they voted that they can then tell other people that they don't have a right to complain about the government. Don't they seem to realize that people have a full choice of not voting if they don't like who's running.
Besides most people are just proactive about their government once every four years. They don't even seem to realize that writing a letter to a legislator would gain them so much more power then a vote ever could.
So is it that we didn't vote or that we arn't proactive in the workings of our government?
You mean the demographic that sinks to using msn messenger.. Afterall it does come installed on windows xp and nag and nags...
With aim. You have to go download the client and install it.. Unless they have aol. Which case they arn't on my list
Now one of those demographics seems a little more inclined not to be stupid.
I stopped using msn messenger when everyone kept changing their alias That everyone just used for a motd..
Also aim is so much more reliable then msn messenger. Msn im goes down for maintenance all the time. Even tho the protocol has the ability to tell the client to connect to another server.
In the end every network has it's quirks. Aim is just getting verbally attacked because it's attacked to aol. Alright so aol doesn't always do what we like, but that does not mean they have some good things. Afterall they did help with mozilla and the gecko engine in more then one way..
btw I am still able to connect to aim. (then again I don't disconnect.)
Well I am tired so you guys get my grammatical errors
One day I went to visit a old teacher from my highschool while there I saw a kid take Put IE back in the dock (I took it out). When I asked the kid what he was doing.. He told me that he made web pages and he knew what he was doing. Further investigation showed was one of those people that would take any microsoft product over something else. (Sheeple I like to call them)
So I come back a awhile later to help the teacher with some new computers.. Still seeing kids using IE.. So what did I do.. I installed firefox. Put it in the dock. I changed the Icon to the internet explorer one. Then promptly deleted IE. No one ever noticed. (I only did this on one mechine. The rest have safari. This was just a test mechine)
Oh the new computers.. Overkill.. Lets see iMac G5, Powermac G5, and a Dell pc. For each Workstation.. For a highschool. Wish I had that at home.
It makes sense to spend money on things to explore our own planet.
Stuff is cheap to make here, Why not make the mistakes cheaply so that when we go to make the vehicle to explorer other planets. (some moons have a liquid substance) We already have the knowhow and only have a few things to re-engineer.
Some ask why it was so cheap for the spaceshipone to be built and flown.. Well thats because we already spent tons of money figuring out how to do alot of the stuff they did on the spaceshipone. So to say that America (or any other country, I do have to give the Russians credit) has been wasting money on the space program, and then try to use the price of spaceshipone as proof doesn't go over too well.
So as we build on our collective experience's/knowledge things get cheaper. Same applies to alot of the objects we use everyday.
"PCs are not selling to the lower end of the population in China and India. People buying machines there are relatively affluent. So...should the prices be lower? Not really. Until government and situational factors reduce piracy...those people...don't pay," Ballmer said. (article clipping)
Now an open letter to Ballmer Ballmer
Shouldn't people in the lower end of the population spend their money on something a little more worthwhile then a computer. Maybe just maybe they could spend that money on their family Before purchasing such a luxury item as a computer. Of course I am not going to be naive and say they don't need a computer for some reason. But to say that I want money from the lower end of the China/India population is selfish, Specially when they have better things to spend it on..
I don't do business with your company on those rash comments. I get by without using your software. Sorry if you feel that I am not being fare.
Not saying I haven't pirated your software before, instead of attacking me you're attacking someone who couldn't even pay you if they wanted to is just harsh. Oh and by the way I used your software to learn about and then go into computers so in a indirect way your company benefitted from it.. So the very thing that you are against has kept your company afloat, by customer awareness.
I no longer use any pirated software from your company. I get by with alternate platforms (Mac, Linux)
I watched a special on money.. Most people that the guy went to thought it was real money, even though it was just liberty money.. I was interested in this 'money'. So I went to there site. Learned a little about.. Everything that I was learning about it just seemed so Anti-Government. Such as You don't have a to pay taxes.. Know what taxes keep this country going.. If you arn't going to pay taxes (honestly) Then get out. I don't want to pick up your burden because you found a "legal out" while legal isn't ethical.
Another thing I found was that it is a backed currency, Joy so I can trade in my liberty notes for silver.. Tell me how is that going to help me if I need food. As for the dollar being fiat so what so is silver. Silver has no value unless it can be used for something usefull. When you get down to it no many is really value backed unless it is accepted.. So if everyone needs food but all they have is silver.. Silver is useless.. ( Unless it's being used as a conductive)
I will not accept liberty money.. And again I hate how they try to pass it off as "regular money"
A shotgun is a good use for any hardware made with Palladium.
Anyways something more serious. They (Palladium) are trying to implement something that should be totally in software not hardware. Its kinda like throwing hardware at virus's (which is what They are really doing)
Like almost everything microsoft does They are pretty bland about their technolgies. For example can anyone give me a concise answer on.net the public would understand. Yep thats right its mostly a marketing word. (I shutter to call it that)
Lets go through what Palladium does.
1 "Critical data is in the user's control" Wow so thats what drm is all about.. I would of never known.. Seriously Why are they trying to implement part of drm in hardware.. Its not a portable device and even then. Lets get back on topic.. Users are already in control of files. Is it that the gui is confusing to users? Well whats to say that this new drm gui won't be either. I think this is more a case a gui design.
2 'Programs and computers can prove they are the other computer/program' Seems to me that we can do that too in software.. SSH verifies the other computer when you connect. It's called keeping the private key private..
3 Something about allowing certain users access to certain documents.. We have this too. Its called permissions and useing pgp to send files..
Well I am going to stop there.
I am way past my original post.
I will not support any manufactor that will suppport Palladium, I will go with apple before that happens.
All and all this concept Microsoft is trying to do is overkill, if they only wrote secure code (they are doing better then in the past) they wouldn't need to take such drastic moves.
But since some people may take you serious. I went to the site. It's clean, has a link up at the top for the chat feature. How is that intrusive? (now that is all I have seen so I don't know if they pop it up on other pages.)
What you are saying is the equivelent to calling up Microsoft's help line and harassing them because you don't like them.
This company found a niche way of helping their customers, if you don't like it don't use said feature or go with someone else. You're a consumer you do have a choice.
With all that said I think it is quite childish behavior.
You try getting a trunk that has SS7. Oh wait you can't.
You say that you the pstn is insecure.. Have you tried lately to 'hack' into one, well besides being able to listen to whats on a analog line. Tell me how a cellphone is insecure (They have encryption and cdma is pretty secure by itself.), or how a isdn line is insecure.. Those are circuit based networks. (well cellphones are a hybrid)
Tell me how would you go about overhearing a circuit in this circuit based network? You can't. The fbi can, But that hardly makes it insecure. Circuit based networks by their very nature are actually highly secure networks. The only person you really have to worry about is the one in control of the line, if you dont' trust them you go with someone else and use encryption..
Now packet based networks are the ones you really should be worried about. Anyone that is on your network segment can sniff your packets. Now if they are encrypted or not is really kinda beside the point.
The modern ptsn network has out of band signaling (ss7) So you can't do alot of the attacks that the old phone networks were vurnable to. LIke playing your own tones (inband signaling.) So tell me again why a circuit based network out of band signaling is insecure?. (oh you can't get into the out of band signalling other then to dial and thats with isdn which uses isup for its out of band. Which is really limited and firewalled {for lack of a better term at the moment} the switch)
Yep. I should have mentioned that I am the one that had the date wrong.
So it's a day off. My bad.
I have a little nslu2 I have debian installed on. It runs a ARM processor.
I just check it's time Both date and hwclock are reporting wrong. I have it's clock set to utc.
Interesting bug, I will set the clock tomorrow to see if it happens again.

Don't Use gmail..
Can I have that invite now?
Just joking I already have a gmail account, as a sidenote gmail is the best free email service I have used.
"PCs are not selling to the lower end of the population in China and India. People buying machines there are relatively affluent. So...should the prices be lower? Not really. Until government and situational factors reduce piracy...those people...don't pay," Ballmer said. (article clipping)
Now an open letter to Ballmer
Ballmer

Watch as danamania gets a whole lot of new slashdot friends just because she's a girl...
I know I added her to my friend list.
Ok off-topic but I thought it was funny.
A shotgun is a good use for any hardware made with Palladium.
.net the public would understand. Yep thats right its mostly a marketing word. (I shutter to call it that)
Anyways something more serious. They (Palladium) are trying to implement something that should be totally in software not hardware. Its kinda like throwing hardware at virus's (which is what They are really doing)
Like almost everything microsoft does They are pretty bland about their technolgies. For example can anyone give me a concise answer on
Lets go through what Palladium does.
1 "Critical data is in the user's control"
Wow so thats what drm is all about..
2 'Programs and computers can prove they are the other computer/program'
Seems to me that we can do that too in software..
