With most voip app's they just shutoff the microphone when the person isn't talking. This produces an weird silence. Cell phones have to do the same thing to conserver power but what they do is, Place confort noise. This keeps the person thinking that the call is still going. (This is what really turns me off about VOIP)
Another beef I have with voip.. NOthing seems to be standerdised. One voip app does not work with another.
I just think its not the correct way of going about creating a network that is designed to be directly connected. The network that pstn is based on has a niche. Where else are you doing to get a virtual connection without having to bury your own lines to every office. (forgot the terms at moment)
It's extremly hard to talk to someone when A. You have a delay. B. You have missing packets that interupt the signal, Thus you get dropouts.
Now I do like voip in games.. That confort noise I was talking about, Is now takin over by the sound the game makes, and so the silence inbetween isn't so weird.
I have heard about sprint doing voip networks with their own network to get around the ping/packetloss/QOS that is not a garantee on public networks. But I view it as if They want to have a packet based voice network they need to design it from the groundup to just work instead of just layering it ontop of IP. They then need to submit this to the standerd association, So that phone companys don't have to convert/recompress and signal with eath in and out on the network. Otherwords a more lossless operation.
Try changing the date on your computer before you install Real, And then change the date again.
See if it just isn't the quality of software has just increased around paid Real. And thus that Paid Real's quirks became more apparent.
Just a thought also have the computer disconnected from the network. Gotta make a safe test enviroment. You have to have the media already on the computer.
When someone can be forced to do something, because a user something disparaging. As far as I am concerned this is covered under freedom of speach, and thus shouldn't even be an issue.
If someone were to say something about me I didn't like. I have a few choices. 1. Ignore them. 2. Defend myself (If they are being really loud about.) 3.Tell them to shutup and force it.
The last one is in a absurb way telling myself to shutup. By taking away one of their rights I am taking that same right away from me. (yah its kind of out there)
If some guy was threatening to sue me for somethign a user said, I would most likely investigate it and if true leave it up.
As for this guy he sounds like a crybaby. So someone said something you didn't like. So what get over it. By bring this in as a legal manner only brought that 'unwanted anttention".
This guy has no facts.. He points out no holes in the macs. In short he's just bitter..
Maybe he should of Written an article about how these petty fights between: Windows vs Mac should stop.
Maybe he should of Written more facts: Like windows explorer process isn't just a file explorer but also the start bar.. And thus when it freezes Bye bye start bar, Where as the mac has the Dock.app seperate from the Finder.app.
Now It doesn't have those facts. Its more of a disappointing article about some disgrungled pc user.
Right as I am downloading Debian. I will check the md5sum.
Anyways Something to be said about passwords.. I am getting sick of passwords.. I have looked at the RSA keychains, But they cost too much.
So I ask are there any good one time password systems out there. That are opensource.. I have looked at going with smart cards but again with the money. (not to mention overkill for me)
I have found a few but none with a keychain.. I don't mind paying for a keychain, but I want the software to be opensource.
First Music is very distracting, for some it isn't so. Yearbook is what we would call having pride in our school Which is a good thing.
Second. I do not want a service to be appended to a fee that is ment to keep the computers updated/administered.
Third. Oh lets append to a fee so our students won't do something illegal. Wait thats assuming that someone is going to do something wrong.. Wait thats a bad assumtion. To go ahead and add a fee, a fee that isn't even education centralised is idiotic.
Now I will admit that maybe I shouldn't of said I can be distracted easily in the way I said it, but that gives you no right to then insult me and my intelligence. You looked to far into that one. Made too many assumtions.. Now I am done with you..
The Reason I don't like it, Is The school is paying for it, That means that tuition fee's are really the ones paying for it. (or added in to some other fee Which is what it looks like they did)
If you are going to do something like this make it a fee not something that is included that I can't opped out of.
I get distracted easily. I don't want to have to pay for something that is potentialy going to distract me. To those that say Oh but its included. Yes it is But the school has to pay for it somehow. The article stated that it would be paid for with a "$160 information technology fee"
Now what else does this fee include? That the student would have to have for a class, but lets say the student doesnt wanna use napster. OH well.
The way I would like to see it setup is for the school to make a deal that would make the music cheaper but without having the school shell out anymore money. (and thus the student) Or for napster to say support a music club on campus. The more music people buy, The more money the music club could use for such things as concerts for any local bands. This would work out for napster and the school. Napster gets not only money for music but they also get publicity and the school gets money too. Both happy.
Of course there are more details but thats the jist of it.
I used to work for Customer service. A customer called in complaining about xupiter. I told them I didn't have a guide to uninstall it but that I would go the extra mile and find out how to get rid of it. I did a little googling. Found an unistall page. Got the bloody thing uninstalled while the woman on the other side of the phone is thanking me profussly (one of those customers That over reacts and it takes telling her twice to do something because, you are talking to her husband through her)
I then told them how to setup IE so that it wouldn't automatically install things.
I sent my survey out and I didn't get the greatest score from them.. But she was thanking me to the point of me wanting to tell her to shutup and listen.
So xupiter and IE get my vote.
Rant Oh and some users who can't learn what the second mouse button is.. I can see them not using it.. But when i say RIGHT mouse button hose much more discriptive can I get.. rant over
Its gui was a pain in the butt to use. I sat there for 2 minutes trying to get the game to use bluetooth.. I got fruistraited and walk away.. It appears That I wasn't the only one that didn't like it There was another guy that didn't seem to play with it very long...
Nokia is like microsoft They try too much and thus products that are excepted but arn't up to snuff alot of the time.
So all and all I gave it a try.. I am looking forward to Tapwave's Zodiac. From the screenshots of it, I can tell its gui is nice and clean.
But they had it in the Private IP address space... Yes they natted me. (wisp) They never advertised That They did have it. They had divx movies, divx tv shows, and Mp3's. They even had software, I got msn office off it.. (Yes I warezed it, Now I don't have it installed I use OpenOffice. In fact I deleted it)
Did this isp advertise they had it?
I can't read the article since It seems to be slashdoted.. (ZDnet?)
Does anyone else's isp Do such a thing. Just wondering.
When in highschool My friend had a car that was the perfect size to make into a remotely Controled Real Car.. I would have Rhinolined the whole vehicle. Take it out to nowhere and Had fun Just watching a real car going, without a driver. we never did it... If I find a small vehicle I may do it Then make a webpage complete with my in handcuffs (ok maybe not) But hey maybe I could get that on slashdot.
It would be halarious to see people look over on the highway at car with no driver. (In which case you really would get to see me in cuffs)
Oh and for those wondering about safety I would of had a backup remote for brakes.
The things you would do for the hell of it.
Does intel think that they are going to tell china, "you are going to fail".
If china wants to develop for a different platform. Its their choice. If they also want to develop on a different processor then what intel offers then that is their choice. Personally I like it. If china/asain succeed's not only will they have a nice platform (hopefully) They will have a cpu that isn't pulled down by all hacks to make it modern.. I Say 'Hey china go ahead'.
Why should china put money into other country's when it can put it into their own.
Really I think intel just wants money. But their solution is just a hack for backword compatibilty. Theres really a point where backword compatbility stifles things. (the itanium is nice tho, since its not x86 based.)
well one thought comes to mind. Some technology does need to be tazed.
Lets say that your in a city where it is cheap to put in a line. That line gets taxed. That money then goes towards subsidizing more expensive long haul lines or for people out on the farms.. So you can now call some far away family/friend over the line that was subsidized. kinda how roads are built using tax's on gas. The money I imagine would also go towards managing the phone companies.. Since vonage does connect to the ptsn this is a fair tax. It connects to the public phone network. So its all game. So voip isn't the thing gettting taxed its the services that is beign provided. (if it wasn't connected to the ptsn then it wouldn't be the same service)
I am taking you more as a troll then anything. You hate the standerd so you really dont' see a use for it. That may be, but who's to say that it doesn't have a use. (embedded etc)
There are a few incorrect things you have to say about sd/mmc SD is a parrellel technology while mmc is serial. (don't ask me how it works) As far as SD/MMC getting into embedded markets you are only correct in the consumer market (such things as palms/pda's/mp3 players).
Compact Flash still leads a healther life in the true embedded market (things like pc104/pc104plus, etc) If you have ever taken apart a pcmcia to compact flash adaptor you would see that it's pretty much straght through. So theres your smaller standerd right there.
You assumed too much. You didn't Think of other peoples uses. There are plenty of things this new standerd could go towards. But no you assume that since the cards are huge (I wonder is pci/agp/pci-x huge, if so wouldn't you want a new standerd like this for the desktop platforms?) They are of no use. Sure we could use sdio to replace pcmcia but making things that small cost's money..
If Anything Windows is the bug.... Have you seen that rainbow butterfly.. Not only is it a bug, it's proud of it. Why else would it dance around like a fairy.
Voip in my view is a bad hack to make things cheaper. Here are some reasons I don't like voip and feel it should not be used for telco backbones. (I also have a list of good things)
1. With the recent worm activity, it just showed how much The net is vurnable to attack. I don't know about you But I want to be able to call people when my net connection is down. 2. Voip is traveling over a unsecure network. Meaning that the voip gateways can be spoofed, dos'ed, hacked, etc. 3. Voip is better equiped for use in private networks (meaning your home or small bussiness) 4. Bandwidth isn't set aside for voip session. Blurp's being hungup by a 'dos happy 13 year' (yah yah sure we will have ipv6 but its still on a unsecure network.) Reasons why voip is cool.
1. Its not set on a single route.
2. Its fun to play with for a quick chat with a friend over the internet.
All and all voip is pretty cool But I don't want to see it intergrated into the public phone system. If the phone company's want to implement a decentrillised system then they need to colaborate together. To make a system which isn't prone to attacks.. what it comes down to is what QOS (quailtiy of service) that a new system can provide.. voip isn't going to provide a high enough qos for me. (there are reasons why the phone system has huge battery banks.)
ATM's have camera's So if the need arised they could get your face. This is how I invision it to work. You gat a card that has no named attached you put the card in the ATM. You put the cash in the mechine, the atm then puts the money on the card.(that does not have your name on it) So I see it could be a anomynous debit card. Being only able to spend whats on the card. But what banks will support it. I would get something like that. Maybe I should go lookup the patent.
I found the magic pot-o-gold, and the lepercons don't want me to tell you about. So what they are going to do is sue me and then the press will have a hay-day. Then everyone will know there's a pot-o-gold and go after it. I must say this napster(the beginning and being continued with p2p) thing looks alot like that. Instead of inticing us with things such as, lower price's, offering extras (for example a free watch with a album named time) not using the money given to them to alienate their customers. But instead they choose to be gready... now look at the mess they are in.

What is it that is in the gpl and X license, That is incompatble? That is the issue right?
I don't feel like reading pages of both to find
out, and I have the feeling many slashdotters don't either.
As for Y-windows, last I looked I like it. Heres hoping that it will take off. Its like x But with builtin widgets.
