  1. Security in microkernels - Symbian view on Microkernel: The Comeback? · · Score: 1

People keep mentioning QNX and VxWorks as if there are no other popular microkernels.
There is another commercial microkernel, EKA2(derived from EKA morphed from EPOC) used as a base for Symbian in current/upcoming generations of Nokia and Sony Ericson smartphones. Given that the phones run on low power CPUs, symbian performance is pretty good. Since it is a microkernel the current EKA2 generation has an extensive(and simple) security model where every process is marked with a privilege such that security-crucial servers can easily ignore IPC from servers deemed to be less secure.
This feature of isolating various processes in the system without serverely restricting the APIs would be very difficult to model in a monolithic kernel.

Additionally because Symbian is based on a microkernel architecture, there is very little coupling between system components, so one can replace the filesystem, ip stack, etc, without recompiling the kernel avoiding the need for vendors to maintain giant patches and having to fix them with every new release as is done with linux.

In fact compared to the panasonic r, t,w series or sony tr, vr, x series, fujitsu, jvc, etc apple isn't even in the same class. All of the above PC manufactures have laptops that have AT LEAST the same features, but generally more & often for less money. I repeat, apple doesn't have anything to compete with in ultraportable market except marketing and hordes zealots.

And don't give me that slot loading crap. PC laptops like panasonic w2 got way more innovative cdrom designs.

Anyways, I hate it how people say that macs are better. Everybody made fun of me for buying a vaio sr19(10" & 2.9lb) instead of a "portable"(5lb?) ibook. Well, since then at least 2 of my people had to RMA their laptops due to mobo failure and screen issues.
Don't believe me? Check nice ibook stories here.
So to each his own. Sony can make good laptops and apple might too. Know what you are buying instead of just betting your buck on brandnames. But for god's sake, stop this whole "Apple is holy, ppc is better bullshit".

Oh yah recently my laptop experienced a big weight dropped on it from over a meter. As a result there is a crack on both sides of it, but it still functions(except for the bent memory stick slot).

What have you been smocking? That's a heavy laptop. And with a 15.2" whalebook like this, you probably have issues finding room for it in the backpack.

For your info, to qualify as thing and light laptops generally have to weight around 2.7lb, not kg!!!

Checkout Panasonic R1, the little Fujistus, sharp actius or even the old school sony vaio sr* laptops. Those are thing and light, yours is a monster. Admit it!

ps. Some manufacturer needs to start adding pullout handles + little wheels to their whalebook lines of laptops. That way people wouldn't have to strain their backs.
Another option would be to add 4 retractable feet to the laptop, so you be useful as a desk too.
