I quite agree. I have never participated in a malicious system entry except on my own home network to test my own security, nor have I any illegal MP3s on my disks. I have no modern filesharing utilities such as kazaa and such, but do have a server with NFS and Samba running behind my firewall. But if the RIAA chooses to break into my computer and delete anything there, I will of course be forced to retaliate. The EFF will surely assist me in doing so. (yes, in court)

well, i understand that, but such fuzzy semantics are ludicrous. Linux is a kernel, Mach is a kernel, HURD is a kernel, win32 is a kernel. ls is a tool, dir is a tool, excel is a tool, vi and emacs are tools (though emacs is also an OS), Excel is a tool, Photoshop is a tool. cutting it up like this is like the semantics between calling everything done in Perl a script and everything done in C++ a program. I have seen Perl programs that go far beyond what I would consider a script, and C++ things that would qualify as a small script. So without better defined categories, they're going to have to acknowledge that its pure opinion and not fact. Typical for a Michael post.

well, at Microsoft we didn't need timelines, we needed project milestone schedules which we did manually as it was more efficient than project for our needs. We did plan, we just didn't need any software made to do it to do so.

Your astounding ignorance is still standing, as people do not need Word and Excel. Tell me something Word does that I cannot do with an opensource equivalent, not including .doc files because the format is utter shite and hardly qualifies as a positive feature. I can admit that Excel is superior to OSS spreadsheet programs, but most business and user needs are met by the equivalents unless they are venturing out of the realm of what a spreadsheet is and doing something else's job and making it 10x as hard and time consuming by using a spreadsheet for it.

actually, no. They need a word processor (or more often a text editor, to be honest), spreadsheet, and I don't even know what the hell Project is but I have been on high profile projects within Microsoft itself that did not use any software called Project, but I am sure there is an alternative or at least a name for it other than by brand name.

Your ignorance is astounding. It's like needing a tissue but refusing anything but the brand "kleenex" that you asked for, or needing an adjustable wrench but refusing anything but a wrench made by Crescent since you asked for a "Crescent Wrench". this is true, i used RedHat for a year before switching to gentoo, and i did so because Red Hat's defaults didn't suit my needs. Unlike many other gentoo users around here, I don't disdain those who use other distros. I just find it amusing when people post about features gentoo has when speaking of imaginary distros. One thing I think would be good for some is a gui interface to emerge. I wouldn't probably use it since I don't like running root windows in X, but it would benefit people who find the command line version cryptic.

depends. you can learn a lot from installing gentoo, especially the newbs. How many newbs actually know what is in /etc or how to get around on the command line? even for someone who knows a bit and has been using a mainstream distro, it can be pretty enlightening to at least do an install of Gentoo. This is an opinion, ymmv, but LFS seems like a lot of work for not a great amount of return when a distro like Gentoo exists. Granted I am sure its great for some projects, but for most desktop users LFS is arduous where Gentoo automates without loss of the performance desktop users are probably seeking from either type of distro.
