  1. new music ? on New Computer Program Determines "Hitability" · · Score: 1

It would be interesting to see how(if) the software takes into account people getting bored with the current trend of music - will it be able to dub a hit to the next big thing to come along that's completely new and sounds nothing like what's been a proven hit in the past (and doesn't follow traditional chord progressions, time signatures, etc ...)?

  2. What needs to be done next ... on Eminem #2 on Gracenote... Before Release · · Score: 1

Is to find a way to pirate music that the artist hasn't even written yet.

  3. What ever happened to good music? on Where Music Will Come From · · Score: 1
What I seemed to find interesting was that while sales of records from "major lables" were not nearly as high they were in the zenith of Napster - many small independent lables, saw the best sales of their recrods since their inceptions. Would anyone else be willing to take the posistion that this trend could have to do simply with better music coming from other outlet other than major labels?

i won't even bring up a certain artist getting paid millions to - well ... not sign anymore.

  4. Dave Thomas - of Wendy's fame - dead at 69. on Preliminary Injunction Against SuSE · · Score: 0, Offtopic
It doesn't have much to do with this topic.

The Associated Press is reporting that Dave Thomas, from the Wendy's comercials is dead at 69. Yahoo has a story here.

  5. moving forward. on Public Money, Private Code · · Score: 1
i can't recall who said it, but i do know of a quote i've read that was something along the lines of "societies that advance, are the openly that share knowledge with others".

often colleges and universities are regarded as places where information is openly shared, and if they begin to stop sharing their findings with those outside of the university, does anyone feel that there may be many situations where researchers will on more often than they should be doing research on problems that have already been solved?

  6. Whatever happened to fun? on The Battle Of The Consoles: From Atari To The Xbox · · Score: 2, Insightful
it just seems like the makers of these gaming consoles keep are forgetting why people by gaming consoles in the first place - to have fun.

my first memories of game consoles in the 80's when nintendo and sega first broke out in the 80's the emphasis in advertising was on how much fun you could have using their consoles, the average person who buys game consoles is more into professional wresting and not kernel updates.

let's face it, there's a lot of really games out there that have amazing graphics, require state of the art technology to run, had used millions of man hours in their creation, etc... still are still not as adictive and fun as something as silly as a very low tech game you would use on your pda.

it just seems to me that it's getting harder and harder to find a game console that offers a countless number of games that are hard to put down.

  7. Will this attract new users? on Porting Debian to... Windows · · Score: 1, Interesting

If Debian is successfully ported to Windows(tm) to the point where a non-computer savy users could set it up, does anyone think this would bring about a new batch of Linux users?

  8. still not the same as live ones. on CG Idols - Human Not Required · · Score: 1
the one downside of computer generated celebrities is that there's never that chance meeting that you might have with them one day on the street.

however if there was that chance run in with the celebrity in a chatroom...

  9. Microsoft is laughing. on Microsoft Would Settle For The Children · · Score: 1

I can't help but wonder if Microsoft(tm) came up with this as their way of giving the finger to the justice system -- you know, they could make a random software package give a suggested retail value of 1 billion dollars and donate it to a school.

  10. Ehhh... on Would You Pay A Penny Per Page? · · Score: 1

The upside to having to pay a penny per page to surf the web - I'm going to imagine that in this world those darn banner ads don't exist - many may move into the direction of more content driven websites that will make you want to read the information on the website. However, just how much web content will it take to make up one page? You know that they'll be those people out there who will be enlarging fonts and whatnot to make you view another page and get that extra penny. All and all, I see this kind of like the notition of ebooks - pretty good thought, but it will probably never catch on.

  11. Re:Pointless... on Rolling Your Own Laptop? · · Score: 1

as much as i'd hate to admit it - with this post being labeled flamebait and all - you really are going to end up spending just as much money on a system that has less bells and whistles to develope this custom laptop from scratch.

  12. it's about time. on Student Researcher Wins Patent Dispute · · Score: 0, Redundant
from my experience in universities, academic advisors existed for the reason of advising me what to do with my research. in the sense that they would point me in the direction of where it is to go to get particular information and whatnot.

by a lot of these resident phds being able to steal patent ideas from their students - without the better portion of them taking appropriate action against this, i can't help but wonder just how many of them did rightfully do what was required of them to earn their phds.

  16. Would this hurt research? on NASA Considers Privatizing Space Shuttles · · Score: 1

By privatising shuttle lunchs, would there be a conflict of interests of the objectives of what the goal of the missions will do? It seems that this many turn into a situation where the people who are putting up the money for the launches (be it one organization or a group of organizations) could threaten to pull funding if they don't get what they want to get out of the mission.

  17. Not if there's a good QA department. on Can Software Schedules Be Estimated? · · Score: 2, Insightful
From my experience in the development department at my place of work, often no matter how wacky some of the deadlines given by "project managers" are to have fairly significant pieces of code or patches to be done by are often met - more times than we'd like to admit they're met at the last second.

However since they're met at the last second, often the code that is written suffers. From there often the QA department will find something wrong with the poorly written code, send it back to the development department who then has to spend some more time to fix the new errors that the sloppy code created. So although the "project manager's" deadline was met, the end client often is delayed by the additional things that were discovered.

  18. States just not knowing enough. on MS Settlement: Six States (And Samba) Say "Stop!" · · Score: 2, Insightful

Does anyone else feel that possibly the one of the reasons that there are only six states is because state legislators are just not knowledgable enough of the software to see exactly what Microsoft(tm) is doing? Do people feel that there is a possibly of those six states convincing other states - ala "12 Angry Men"?
