    Airplanes already have a ventilation system. Just move the cockpit bulkhead a few feet aft, and give the flight crew their own biffy.

    Correct; he ignores the folie a deux effect.

    Also, the assignment of crewmembers is not random. Two parties willing to commit dual suicide can engineer a crew assignment together, or wait for one to arise through random factors.

    Seems like the only resource worth bringing down from the Moon would be one that just don't hardly exist down here...but if you were planning a long-term presence there, getting resources locally could be a lot cheaper than hauling them up.

    Even so, the startup costs would be pretty intimidating.

    The problem is what's between the islands. You need thermal lift to fly long distances in a glider, and there's precious little of that over open water. And for every successful flight of 1000+ km, there are plenty that had to be abandoned partway.
