Seems like these projects are the first to check out. Subscribe to their mailinglist and IRC channels to get a feel for how the projects works and if you feel like it could be fun to be part of said project. This way you will also figure out who the people are to talk to to get your started.
Other than that if you have some heros, start following them on twitter. I am sure they will frequently mention interesting OSS projects they are checking out or that they are contributing to.
Finally you could consider joining on the development of resolutionfinder.org. Could be a fund project with learning opportunities expanding the Solr driven search, adding data mining tools to expand the content, coming up with ways to integrate expert user feedback into the editorial process, maybe work on SEO aspects etc. All the while doing something that could really make a difference in the world, aka making UN resolutions more accessible to the world. To me one of the general short comings of FOSS licenses is the question of the compiler. To me something is only truely FOSS if along with the binary I get I also have access to a compiler that is available under a FOSS license and the compiler flags. Anything else may be readable in source, but simply not really enabling me to reproduce the binary in the original or in a slightly altered way.
This thing looks pretty perfect. Especially the ability to swap the DVD drive for a battery and the mini s-video adapeter is very sweet. Now it only needs to make use of the about to be released ATI chipsets for better 3D performance and give a DVD-R as an option and I am sold...
they are actually quite radical..
for example the mmc/sd chip is now integrated
btw: the opensource community is trying to get 2.4.19 to run on the 5500 but the old mmc/sd module needs an update... which is impossible because the community does not have a license from sd.org and sharp doesn't have the "resources" to take care of it for us nor is it offering any assistance in getting one of the community the rights to do it himself.. this is where i am pissed
well this little thing looks like a really nifty tool. it does not have java plastered all over it, but it will probably run java if you want as well as the sources are open. it also does not have a color screen which has limited use in a pda imho, atleast as long as the pda does not have a camera build in.
but this thing has everything else you could wish for in a pda/phone and i dont even use sms so i doubt i will use mms:-)
the reason for a quick release of the PS3 might be the fact that Sony does not own the name "Playstation" alone. They have to pay like 10-15% of all revenues they make through the playstation trademark to nintendo (or was it sega?).
If I could only find the source, but it was all over the web back then (must be 3-4 months ago iirc).
That might be a good incentive to move quickly to a new console with a new name.
hyperthreading does not fix the issues if a long staging pipeline... less prediction errors can only help there...
hyperthreading just helps keeping more parts of the cpu busy all the time and therefore increasing performance (and power consumption and therefore heat production)
their requirement was to let things run side by side.
also they are not recoding their old apps but are mostly writing new stuff in php versus their old alternatives.
so it makes more sense to change as few as possible in their enviornment.
also the more you change the more knowhow you need to rebuild
I disagree.
WineX is great because it serves as a way out of the chicken and egg problem.
Basically thanks to WineX the market for Linux Gamers can be build up. Once there are enough Linux Gamers out there software companies will provide native support.
Paying customers will demand it and not a bunch of opensource users that love getting everything for free that send in a petition.
Microsoft relies on perl for their entire testing fra mework for all I know.
They did pay for the port to windows though. Activestate did it form them.
i think most of the post i have read in here are missing the point.
this will not happen tomorrow. and once it starts to happen there will be (long) transitional period.
actually i am sure that someone will write an xsl to convert any xhtml 2.0 to xhtml 1.x (and probably the other way around too).
i am also sure that for quite sime time any browser will render both anyways.
and for all that are complaing that they just want to write simple webpages and dont care for all of this: use a WYSIWYG editor!
but for professionals this is important stuff. to prevent "infolation" by helping searchengine to get the content effectively this is important stuff. but rest assured there will be tools that will ensure that joe schmo and assembler developer X can publish their stuff on the web.
they can just wait until Mono is somewhat established, apps are built and deployed... then break it and wait patiently for the inevitable migration back to Windows.
how can they break Mono?
they can only break compatiblity to.Net
will all your Mono based apps still work (on Linux, Windows.. etc)? Yes they will!
everybody that thinks that.Net makes technical merit can't be creeped by M$ involvedment because.Net lives in Mono without M$ direct involvement
if M$ makes changes to.Net that dont improve.Net but only break compatiblity to Mono WE DO NOT HAVE TO CARE
the only problem I see are people building up their.Net infrastructure around Microsoft development tools, because these guys will have a problem if M$ breaks compatibility
actually it probably could
but this is surely not one of PHP's stronger points
we have code most of our shell scripts in PHP because that is what we mainly do: Code PHP Scripts
But as always its often not only choosing the right tool but also knowning the tool.
If we end up writing more shell scripts than web scripts we might have to take a closer look at PHP's alternatives (such as Perl)
the difference is that there was a large community lobbying
the main reasons they put forth were: counterstrike is a multiplayer game and therefore not asocial killing is often not the only solution (you can also win by defusing a bomb, protecting a hostage etc) most player actually turn down the gore factor proofing that this is not what the game is about
basically they said most adults should be fine playing the game. teenagers should be monitored but should remain unharmed for the most part.
the reasoning seems odd to me as well because one twisted kid is enough. but i generally agree that banning is not the solution and that computer game are not the cause but more an outlet that in same cases my just not be enough (as in the case of the recent school shooting)
just so everybody knows there is still work done in getting this stuff production ready.
Unfortunately there are still issues on both sides (Apache and PHP) and I think apache2+php will not be production ready until php 4.3.0 sometime in august?
But there are 2 really dedicated people working on this and I assume they will much appreciate your feedback. So check the latest discussions on php-dev, the bugtracker and test the latest cvs.
AMD didn't have much to do with this...
just a little while back they simply bought a company that makes PDA chips.. thats all
the PDA cpu's have nothing to do with the specialities of the Athlon.. both in performance and heat
uhm people.. the same cards pda's and mp3 players have been using for quite some time...
basically they are the version of the MMC that the RIAA luves.. as in they get a say as to how you manage your dat on your devices..
there is a whole group working on this.. i think the lead is taken by pansoic?
well this particular problem was on the trident cyberblade
but its seems like the windows help files are just really contradicting themselves
and the different support from vendors for the various windows OSs makes it even more confusing
it seems like in terms of dual monitoring there are chipsets that work well under winNT/2k/xp but alot dont
well this is a bot off topic, but since i said it i might as well clarify:
my problem was caused by win9x problematic memory management that led to alot of crashes when i opened too many apps
especially homesite 4.5.1 had a lot of issues (4.5.2 was much better there)
wincvs was also really problematic
but the main problem was just filling up memory and win9x choking
well I would actually prefer to have the laptop TFT to be secondary, because my CRT monitor is much bigger... but choice would be nice (especially if you have the 16" sony laptop)

Easily the best bug ever. Its been paramount in enabling continous "innovation" as people speed jump through maps.
does it charge via usb as well?

If I can scrape together the money that is.

check out the new filwalker from invair
:-)

do not convert from mp3->ogg
this will not get you the result you want to
i am afraid you will need to re-rip all your music

since they use Perl for their testing framework .. they could step up and donate?
dunno ... maybe they already do ..?

yes i never had any trouble running dual monitoring on win98 the problems where with win2k and winxp and the question was about linux :-)
well this is a bot off topic, but since i said it i might as well clarify: my problem was caused by win9x problematic memory management that led to alot of crashes when i opened too many apps especially homesite 4.5.1 had a lot of issues (4.5.2 was much better there) wincvs was also really problematic but the main problem was just filling up memory and win9x choking
