So, Everyone that goes to the new version of Office will be locked into a forced upgrade stream? What happens when MS comes out with Office 12? Will everyone that uses 11 find that their documents suddenly "expire" because the new version of office is out?
I don't like it. MS wants to control every 0 and 1 that flows through your computer.
Looks like its time to dig out the 'ole Commodore 64.:)

I'm trying to decide which one I want. Both have their appeal.
Of course, One question I had when I heard about the GSP was that the e-reader wouldn't work with it. I would imagine that with the homebrew/demo scene that the original GBA would be better because one could decode the protocol used on the e-reader, print your own cards, and publish your own game that way. That, plus the GSP probably has new "license protection"/DRM/Region Coding/Developer lockout/authentication etc. that the original GBA doesn'have.
I wonder what will happen if ISPs were to limit their customers' ability to use NAT devices...
Either they will lose customers in droves due to the fact that the users can no longer use their fancy-schmancy Linksys router to connect all their computers together, or the router manufacturers will cook up an option in thier firmware to use the NAT-hiding approach mentioned above...

Now I can't remember what it was! But, I'm sure that if I walked through a time warp and ended up in 1992, I would still be able to use AppleWorks. Or, I could use an emulator....
RickTheWizKid ..."Insert WP PROGRAM DISK into any drive and press RETURN"
... but back then, I was learning DOS 3.3 (for Apple II) and AppleWorks, becuase "everyone in the future will be using this stuff!"...
Anyway, I took that seriously, and made damn sure that I *knew* to enter the proper date when Appleworks was starting up, and that I *had* to make sure I had the right disks in the drives.
(Interesting note: Even in Word 2002, CONTROL-B and CONTROL-L are for bold and underlining, respectively)
Of course, we all learned how to use Apple DOS (both 3.3 and ProDOS) - we^H^Hthe rest of the class did this for a solid month, during which time I was permitted to play Choplifter, Cannonball Blitz, and Ultima V because I already knew how to use Dos... which *really* pissed the rest of the class off...
Anyway, to get to my point, I wonder how relavent the things that they learn now will be a few years after they graduate - and I hope it is *concepts* that they learn, instead of cookie cutter "type CATALOG to see a what's on your disk, insert your disk and type PR#6 to start AppleWorks" stuff...

It seems to me that PocketPC attracts many people by the fact that it uses normal handwriting recognition instead of a "weird" Graffiti format. Most non-geek people are attracted by the fact that they do not need to learn a new way to write on this device.
I just hope that the "new" graffiti is easier on non-geeks...
They are available online, ebay, etc. The only trouble is, they have been "adjusted" to not require coins. If you were to want to make it a real pay phone, you would need the totalizer circuitry (not something the phone cos want to have in the wild... look up the term "red box") and a ACTS phone line - convincing the telco to do that for you would be difficult....

Geez when I had cable, I had to tinker around with 75-100 pF variable capacitors, copper wire, and metal RadioShack boxes to get free TV! Then I graduated to sattelite, and all I needed was a smartcard programmer! This is great news!

I wonder what will happen in schools in a few years? When we were all kids growing up, we were taught that we were the greatest nation because we had certain freedoms, that the government had limited power over watching us etc, instead of places like soviet Russia (where the CD players listen to YOU--- woops, wrong post) that watch and control their citizens.
What is probably going to happen is that kids in schools today will be taught (slowly as not to draw attention to it) that it is good and proper for the government to watch its citizens, that there is no such thing as a "right to privacy" etc... and kids being kids will dismiss our ideas of personal liberty, privacy, etc as old fasioned - or worse, that they see mommy or daddy using PGP or linux, or planting a tree in front of the security camera in their house, and thinking that mommy or daddy must be terrorists...
... if I could gert *any* music track I wanted... even out of print stuff. I would gladly pay, say, $1 per song and pay $15 for a CD filled with stuff I *like* - that may be no longer "officially" available - and not have one or two tracks I like and 13 crappy tracks....
I wonder... 802.11 has large security holes... It's only a matter of time before someone snorts the WEP key and gains access to the system.

a piece of software to remove the DRM in TurboTax - kinda like "insert your CD, run this program, turbotax is up and running"
The only thing is that someone would have to do it anonymously - or from outside the US to avoid violating the DMCA
