Bought Pusuit of Happyness at Best Buy. I've got a Philips DVDR 3400 (with the update installed) and the disc would just play the promos and get to the main menu. But when I pushed play, the screen went black and froze. If you went to the scene selector you couldn't select any scene. Just took it back and got a replacement. Haven't gotten a chance to try it, but I expected it would work no better--this was the only time I've had a new disc not play. I plan to take it back to demand a refund.

This is bullcrap that any company puts out discs and then expects players to "fix" their players.

Personally, I think many women are attracted to the internet because of the social interaction: email, texting, shopping, etc. The stereotypical internet image of the solitary male hacker in a dark room, staring at the screen all day is gone.

Be fair moderators and mod the parent up! You're right on and that's the other side of things. Naked people AREN'T the problem.

Today you can find things on YouTube that I don't want to see--much less the type of things on the truly XXX-rated sites. There are sex acts that I wish I was blissfully still unaware of! And yet all a lot of these sites have to do is have some button that says you agree that you're over 13 or 18 or ask your birthdate, as if anyone over 6 can't figure that out.

What bothers me is the objection the librarians have to making sure a kid coming into the library doesn't find some obscene site left open as a joke by the last person. Or that they can look up porn to their heart's content. You'd think they'd be the first ones to want children protected. They wouldn't (at least I hope they wouldn't) hand a kid a porn mag--yet they want totally open access to anything and everything the tykes trip on by mistyping a site or look for. I have no problem with loading some sort of safeguard software. And don't tell me it might keep some person from researching breast cancer--most of us have blocking software at work that does a pretty good job of weeding out the appropriate from the inappropriate. Besides, the kid is in a LIBRARY--they should be able to research these things called BOOKS. Since when did the Internet become the only authority of fact?

I also have no problem with the library having totally uncensor computers in a specific area away from children and limited to use by those 18 and over.

  16. Re:I hate Star Wars on Serenity Trounces Star Wars · · Score: 1

What's even more hilarious is that Serenity even made the top ten. Ten years from now people will still be talking about Star Wars, Blade Runner, Planet of the Apes, and pretty much everything else on the list. Serenity won't even be a foot note.

Couldn't disagree more. Star Wars (the REAL first one) was unique because it provided mind-blowing special effects. If you look at the plot, however, it's transparently thin. However, people lined up at each showing for a YEAR at the ONE theater that was showing at (in a large city, mind you) before it made it out to the other theaters. NO ONE would have been willing to stand through that for the last three that were out.

One of the reason the later ones failed (yes I know they made a lot of money, but let's talk critically) they never outperformed the original because the writing never got any better. Worse--you knew what was going to happen because it was a prequel. Fans expected more--they were used to seeing superb special effects by now. It was the same in Jurassic Park--the first movie was amazing, the sequels were just bad rehashes of the same plot.

Serenity and the series Firefly was fresh and very anti-Star Trekian (this "federation" was the bad guy). This was not a benevolent UN of the planets, but a 'meddlesome' government who enforced order at the point of a gun or mind controlling drug. You'll notice the bad guys lived in the nice, clean sterile worlds. The good guys got their hands dirty and did whatever it took to survive and stay under the government's radar. The characters were interesting and sometimes quirky, the dialogue was quick and often humorous. The special effects as to the ships, locations and weapons were more realistic. Serenity rode like a roller coaster (or perhaps a leaf on the wind)--you could be laughing one moment and in stunned silence the next. It also had the dubious honor of being the first HD-DVD rip showing up in bit torrent.

One may argue that there are more (in number) Star Wars fans, but Serenity's fans are definitely more passionate.

So which is worse? Companies that bring over immigrants who don't assimilate, send money back to the homeland and then leave to retire back home where it's much cheaper to live? Or companies that move overseas where the labor may, in theory, be cheaper, but most countries have higher taxes, restrictions on firing employees and large benefit packages and health care. Not to mention all the other government bureaucracies they have to put up with. Have you ever seen what it takes to start up a company in India, even though it's a democracy? Don't forget that companies have it a lot better over here too. If it was so great to pull up and move, they would have already. And some that did, quickly moved back.

IMO, this "Don't make me pack my bags and leave," is like a five year-old threatening to run away. We should hold the door open and help them pack their bags. Let's see how many would REALLY want to run off to Europe, India or China. But then don't expect our customs to allow their products in either.

I'm sorry if you've met so many shallow Christians. Actually you've probably meant a lot who weren't--they didn't just advertise their beliefs or wave it in your face. They did, however, lead by example which is what they're supposed to be doing. You probably did notice them--you just never got around to finding out what they believed.

It's true that Christians believe in being saved by faith vs. works and there is a logical reason for this. The simplistic version is God is perfect, man is imperfect and so God reached out a built a bridge from man to Himself. Since (after the fall) man could never be perfect on his own, he needed a divine way to get back to the Creator.

OTOH, James (James 2:20) says that, "Faith without works is dead." God did not just "save" Christians and then not expect them to help others. If you were of a mind, it would make one question that the person was truly a believer if all they cared about was their personal salvation like they had crossed the final finish line.

I think this topic is interesting. Because it makes total logical sense that if God created man, of COURSE he would wire something in the DNA that allows us to know instinctively of His existence.

I thought about Amazon.com too. One thing I have noticed that hasn't changed is that they will change the prices on things left in your cart--sometimes down, but mostly the price goes up. But the price doesn't seem to change in the wish list. It may be just because they don't notify you that the price has changed, but I've got a pretty good memory for what things cost. So what I've been doing is putting items to hold in my wish list and then only moving them over to the cart when I buy them.

One thing that is different from Amazon is that BestBuy is also a bricks and sticks store. And just like any store, one store in California may have too many widgets and so puts the item on sale. Stores in Texas, may have other, different items they want to move. (The fact they ask you to put in your zip code to view the weekly sales list should give you a clue.) And, yes, the price on-line may be different from the one in the store. But if you mention it, they will honor the price in my experience. They should unless it's something you can buy online only--but then it wouldn't be available in the store.
