I like your first question. Daimler-Chrysler is a great German/American example I think of why mergers do not work, and larger companies are not that great. An inability to focus, and management by ego. Look at three of the most successful auto companies in the world right now, BMW, Honda, and Toyota. Each has gone their own way, refusing to lose focus by consuming or being consumed by other manufacturers. Two of the three seem to be constantly derided, well at least as of a few years ago, as being too small to keep up with newer technologies. They've proved the critics very wrong.

I agree. It would seem to me though, that Microsoft being the legally recognized monopoly that they are, that the government is obligated to make sure that they do not also become the sole provider of emulation software. Of course, it'll be a cold day in Redmond before they do that.

The problem there being that they tend to beat the proverbial dead horse, while those responsible (SCO's execs) are long gone. Getting slightly off topic, but I'm curious how manyoutfits on the 'net do this: If they charged you sales tax for a state they do not have a presence in, that can equate to fraud. Every once in awhile you hear people on the news charging illegal fees for items or services, fake taxes being a favorite. It is very illegal to collect money on the state's behalf and then not turn that money over to the state.

It is a bit interesting that they have chosen to focus on what seems a desktop flavor, considering they went after and purchased ximian. If they wanted a vanilla server distro, I'd think they could get that for less elsewhere.

Perhaps they're not interested in the technology, but the name. Suse has a very good reputation I think in both camps (client/server), and was apparently in Novell's grasp, where I don't think Redhat would be ($$$).
