  1. It can on Body Modifications Still Hinder IT Professionals? · · Score: 1

I think it still can. In things like development work and maybe the arts like graphical design, I think it's becoming almost expected. In general Corporate America, yes you see it more but I think you limit yourself with body pearcings and visible tattoos. That's not to say I don't like them, find them interesting and cool, all of that. I'm saying realistically speaking, they are a hinderance.

I've used Linux for years. Believe me, I really like Linux. But OSX not only makes Linux look sub-par, it makes Windows look like KDE. I'm with you on the notion that KDE and Gnome are adding functions and such, but they are not half as polished as OSX. KDE's menu editting is buggy as hell (old rant). Gnome is fat. I really don't see either as cutting edge so much as "we can do it too." That's my whole point. I use Mac at home now almost exclusively. There are aspects of Linux I like better but GUI is not one of them. I can't wait for Linux to have a great GUI. Not so much because I need it but because more people will come to it.

  3. Re:Bullshit on Jamie Zawinski Switches to Mac OS X · · Score: 1

I think one problem Linux suffers from is too many chiefs. I don't mean at the kernel level or any such true structure like that. I mean too many people putting together too many distro's. Don't get me wrong, that's also what's cool about Linux. Everyone is able to taylor-make a distro to their liking. Ultimately, however, we all piece together parts that are already there, though some may truly have a new app. So you have ThisOS distro but it still runs KDE or Gnome, this X or that. There seems to be no new paradigm in Linux to kick it up to another level. SymphonyOS may be taking a stab with Mezzo and I applaud that. I think this is where Linux needs to go desktop-wise. polish the desktop. Yet people are content to look to someone else to do it. So we're here.

Okay, if I've downloaded an iTunes song in Apple format, it would seem obvious that I have an iPod. Why would I want to have it in another format? Pretty-much my only motivation would be to share it, no? Yet, DRM and all the nice PSA's we see from the RIAA tells us NOT to share it. Now they are probably hoping they will have people move to the format and abandon the Apple format. So far, Apple format is superiour to mp3, from what I understand. M$ will need to improve upon the quality in order to steal people away. Not only that, if I have a large number of files purchased from iTunes how will this help me? Is M$ saying they will let me have the same songs for free? If this is the case, they only get revenue on new song purchases. Not sayin they can't make money that way, I'm just saying I'm not sure you're going to have a mass exodus from iTunes with just this set of features. I think M$ has a history of spreading themselves thin. They have this mentality that they must do everything in technology. "Oh! There's a search engine! We need one!" Enter MSN which just isn't attractive. "Oh! There's a chat client! We need one!" Enter Messenger! (crickets chirping) "Oh! Media services!" Blah blah!

OTOH, I wouldn't consider Ubuntu a leading distro and certainly not one making the likes of RH, SuSE/Novell, or even Gentoo quake in their shoes. I use CentOS currently, because I get RHEL and don't have to give those a$$holes my money. See I offered RH my money and they basically said without an Inc. after my name I could piss-off.

Rather, they directed these users to their Fedora Project; assuring customers at the time that they stood solidly behind the project (this despite leaving many customers with PAID support high-and-dry).
