Well, it seems a pointless debate to me.

Why do you need to see source code to understand algorithms? If you do, Knuth's books are probably a bit too high lever for you.

Most algorithm texts I see these days have pseudocode, at most.

As stunning as that is, it's not anything particularly new. ST:Elite Force had Nose-on-Face shadows too, as I recall, though obviously no where near complex as this phenomenal stuff.

What's worrying me here is that since for the first time we have so many ridiculously detailed characters, the fact that they all look the same (since they're based off the same model) is going to be a real yank out of realism.

It doesn't really bother you in Quake2 when you keep taking out the same Strogg over and over again, partially I think because we have imagination enough to believe that those details we can't actually see are different.

I can't think of a solution that doesn't cost oodles and oodles of money, except maybe have really good, really detailed visual damage indicators, and before a new zombie is instantiated, randomly damage it a bit for some variation (Actually, this would be kind of cool).

Does this bother anyone else? Or am I just whining about stuff that doesn't matter?

The only way Yoda could use his size to his advantage in a Lightsaber duel would be to bounce around like that - was anyone reminded of the Win95 mouse cursor, by the way?

Zahn obviously had no license to do anything permanent to the characters

It's sad that they forbid him to do stuff like that, and then let RA Salvatore kill of Chewbacca in that idiotic New Jedi Order series.

At any rate, to see Zahn close out the original set of Star Wars novels in style, check out Spectre from the Past and Vision of the Future. In a mature manner if FINALLY wraps up the story arc that continued from Return of the Jedi, and it's full of permanent changes to the original characters, so that should make you happy.

It is also missing the hellishly annoying Solo children who pervade the New Jedi Order novels. Thank god!

In this interview with the AV Club, he states that Mostly Harmless was bleak and dark because it was written by Douglas Adams at a terrible time in his life, where he couldn't really be funny. It's near the end (just do a page search for 'Mostly Harmless' and you will come across it eventually).

There he states he'd like to do another Hitchhiker book that's a lot more lighthearted (yes!), which I guess is what The Salmon of Doubt is.

Personally, I would go farther than Wowbagger and say that you should only read the original trilogy - HHttG; Restaurant at the End of the Universe; Life, the Universe, and Everything. Soemthing about So Long and Thanks for All The Fish didn't sit well with me. However, I have high hopes for The Salmon of Doubt; Starship Titanic was damn funny, and if he can keep going along those lines, I'll be happy.
