The importance is not about this one issue. I think it is more about the movement away from the isolationist / superior mentality we have here in the US. Many of us have become lost in the idea that we are the greatest and require no effort or need to change for the better despite all of the available evidence. All as we continue to drop down various rankings of consequence.
I wonder if Notch doesn't take on big projects anymore has more to do with him affording not to deal with the stress and patience it takes to deliver a big project. I think it is the same problem that many in the post-success stage have. Look at some of the greatest bands in recent history. You don't see Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, Eagles etc creating at the same level they used to despite being the same creative people. Another example are actors like Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, and Harrison Ford. I just don't think they have motivation for money, more fame, or that self-high of doing something great yet again.
If you didn't have to worry about money would you still work on what you are working on now? At the very least, it sure would make it easy for me to say fuck it when the work hits a low point.

No SDK means a lot harder to develop viruses and worms.
That argument hold true for PCs and Macs as well. But ether one of those devices would be pretty lame with out SDKs to develop on.

What new battery technology suddenly allows a backlit lcd panel to last 24 hours? First he likely means that 8-hours is equal to all-day. And even though he didn't say it I bet that also means "usual use", so we can expect the battery to last 2-hours when playing Halo, just like the PocketPC.
None of course. Am I the only one that is getting tired of this kind of out-right lie? First it was 15 inch monitors where actually 14-inches. 120GB hard-drives arn't actually close to an actual 120GB. </rant>
To terraform you need to make an atmosphere. You need greenhouse gasses to do this. Water generally doesn't factor into the equation. A good reference is "The case for Mars" by Robert Zubrin (although I don't totally agree with him)
From my understanding the thin atmoshere of Mars is mainly CO2. Would this be usefull in helping create a greenhouse effect?
Or you could drop the detail and other graphical effects to hit 30fps. I've never heard of a console deveoper doing this; if it isn't up to speed, they scale back the detail.
Considering that most people will not be playing this game on a true hdtv I think they made the right compromise. They retain all the effects at a good frame rate at a higher quality than most TVs that will be used to play the game. Most people have HD ready TVs or standard TVs. Not many have true HDTVs and those that do have 720p TVs which is just slightly better than this game uses.
What if the XBOX 360 was intended as the main gaming platform for a company for the next five years and they touted it to be incredibly powerful and include high definition support and then they couldn't even manage to make games run on that "high end" hardware today at more than 30fps without toning down the quality?
Oh wait. That's exactly what is happening.
What if you considered that it might just have something to do with the quality of the programming?
Ask youself what you would do with this game on your PC. Would you run it at full 1080 with 10 frames per second or at the released resolution at 30fps? I think they did the right thing.

what we need is to get some momentum behind a decent decentralized DNS-type system.
No, what we need is to remember that the Internet is not some sort of gift given to the world and instead is a evolved network developed by the US military and then educational institutions. This argument that we should have the RIGHT to control it is bunk. It is what it is. Stop trying to claim control over something you don't have the right to control.
Sadly they sound like they are on the way out -- humans have disrupted their environment to the point that the populations are isolated and can't move around freely enough"
Well look at the source. Of course National Geographic will represent them as "on the way out". When was the last NG special you've seen that doesn't spend half the time talking about the doomed earth.
I sure miss those old nature specials that told us about animal behavior and not human behavior..It's strange that they are in danger, but we are finding the biggest one ever seen. I do think environmental issues are of BIG importance, but must every article/show about nature revolve around it?

...After all, what good is a Linux distro without XBox One controller force feedback support.
That's just salty logic. Should the person working on controller support be blocked by someone adding KDBUS?

Firefox isn't exactly doing much as far as UI goes.
Some could successfully argue that Firefox contains a HUGE amount of UI work. The entire app is one large UI system.
A random member of the public told AN IRAQ WAR VETERAN to support his country?
random doesn't always mean uninformed, unexperienced, or non-veteran.
What if this onlooker was a Vietnam Vet where around 1 in 15 died? Perhaps, then, the onlooker would have a point.

The great books have been written. There is no more need for writers.
M.U.L.E. should be there. Or is that too old school?
"That's the game. Play, or stay home. If "They" start spying on you in your home, *then* you can call the lawyers."

So let's get this straight... PS3 is backwords compatible with memory cards and XBOX360 is backwords compatible with games.
I can see why a lot of people are worried about the PS3.

To anyone in the know, what implications would this have on the possible terraforming of mars to have a hospitable atmosphere?
PS3 will be harder to develop for and has only a slight power advantage. That plus it will cost more and come out later. Easy choice.
