You have go tot be kidding me.... BnetD violated Blizzard's EULA and TOU for the Diablo/Starcraft games and Bnet. Yeah the DMCA is annoying, yes it was definately one of many tools used by Blizzards Lawyers to get their way in court. But BnetD was doing something they knew was blatantly not allowed by Blizzard.
And to sum up every test ever done on any platfor using any hardware....
Some things run better on some machines than others.
The End.
Seriously this article and the last and tons of other comparisons always end up with the same conclusions that we have known since the beginnning of time.
Apple's G5's with OS X run some apps really well and some apps poorly. Just like Windows XP runs some apps really well and some apps poorly. With Linux on both hardware platforms some apps run better on the Intel chips and some apps run better on the IBM chips.
So dogeball isn't a game? From the time we're born all of us enjoy playing games - so we're all "born gamers" now born video game players well thats just silly. You're simply wanting to claim firsties for something. If it makes you feel better then alright. But at some point people need to get over their delusions of grandeur...Pong is not something that can captivate you for hours upon hours unless you have ADD. Sure when it was first invented people spent years writing code and working on hardware for it and I'm sure they actually played it to death, but when it was placed on a store shelf and little Joey bought it, he'd play it for an hour maybe 2 and then he did somethign else.
Atari had several models of consoles over the years the 800 was one of the first that had a lot of memorable games - the Commodore64 had/played a lot of the same games. So yeah those models were equivalent, but not the same thing.
I agree. And I'll add that the idea behind the "Root" shirt has nothing to do with the Atari or Pong of video games. Looking back over the last 20 years what was the first gaming console that made kids want stay in their homes for hours instead of going outside?
The Nintendo (ok or Sega or NeoGeo if you were rich) The Atari was great and a lot of kids played it. But given the choice between playing Dodgeball back in 7th grade or playing Pitfall on the Atari - I'd pick Dodgeball in an instant. The Atari was great but it was played with on days when it was too rainy or snowy to go outside, and after an hour or two you'd get bored and want to do something else.
Now the Nintendo...oh my...I didn't want to go outside because I could beat the crap out of my friends for hours in an NFL game or spend literally days exploring the worlds of FF and DW.
My Nintendo is the "Root" of where I got my desire to play games. Not the Atari, Not the Commador64, Not my PC Jr.. Sorry those were all fun, but they didn't make me give up the outside world and make me spend 4-6 hours in front of them every night.

This affects people that go for drinks together I hate when people go out drinking after work on weekdays - because I know the next day they will show up late and hungover.
If people could save it for the weekend, it wouldn't be a problem, but too many rotten apples have spoiled the barrel.
Actually I think I just gave a bad example - Another reason why I favor this new regulation is for (like the article mentioned) the problems with coworker's dating. I have never seen any coworkers be able to succesflly date and work in the same place, altho my experiences are limited to late teen early 20's type people at jobs (so if your 40 and this works good for you), it was always a hassle getting the chick working the counter to properly notify the copy machinist of incoming jobs when they were having a lovers spat. This led to jobs not getting done on time and me firing both of them.
It was also a problem when you had the clingy type girls calling their boyfriends at work every hour on the hour to talk for 15-20 min.
In my opinion I want people to show up to their jobs to work. I don't want them talking on the phones, dating eachother, having sex in the bathroom or supply closet, and I don't want them wasting their time and company time. I want nicer worker bees who are dependable and reliable. If you feel you need to be involved in every one of your coworkers lives go work at some tree-hugger non-profit company that will send you on team building retreats and play matchmaker with your paychecks.
I kind of have to side with "the big evil corporations who take away your freedom" on this...My reason is "off-duty fraternizing among co-workers" IS A PROBLEM at my work.
The majority of the time people chatting it up is fine, but what an employer needs to be able to reprimand people who do more socializing at my work than actual work.
For example at my current job there is one employee who constantly is on the phone with ttheir family and/or friends so much so that other peopl ein the office make fun of the issue. The person in question has actually been spoken too several times about this, but continues doing so. This person also tends to be the "super friendly" type who if you see them in the break room - suddenly they want to talk to you about your day, how you're really doing, what your plans are after work, what you're doing this weekend, and of course they have to tell you a story from their own life about each reply you have.
They waste my time, company time, and in all honesty their own time acting a fool like this. Seriously this person can't go to the bathroom without talking for 10-15min with each person in the hallway between there and back.
I would probably think that this was a bad thing, if I didn't see this abuse of company time everyday on a first hand basis.
"With IT workers so commonly producing some of our best work 'after hours,' even at home or in restaurants/bars,"
HAHAHAHAHA - You clearly haven't seen the IT guys I have to deal with. Skinny white pasty guys who live in their parents basement and think good beers are Natural Ice or Miller Light.
I once knew this IT guy who was a little more normal, he had a BBQ at his house, but all he did was show people his multi-computer setup in the living room - he had another coworker actually do the BBQ because he had burned the chicken earlier in the day and of course we had to bring our own Sierra Nevada's (a cheep but alright tasting beer) because we didn't want to drink Coors Light.
"...Microsoft... producing superior software by catering to the needs of the user. This is not IE 6 with a few features borrowed from the competition, but rather a clear step in the evolution of user-centric design."
UGH do/. posts have to require the most pretentious ass-wipe of a 3 liner in order to make it in? Why couldn't the person have just said something like "Microsoft's IE7 is going to be a large improvement from their IE6 version with Tabbed Browsing, Phishing Protection, an Addons Manager, and more"
YES, it is IE 6 with a few new features. MS has added "Tabbed Browsing" something that every other major browser (safari, firefox, opera, etc) has had for quite a while now.
In addition the "Search" box is something many other browsers have had as well, only instead of defaulting to MS's site they automagically use Google or allow you to set your own.
New Icons are NOT "a clear step in the evolution of user-centric design." They are just new icons you smug bastard.
The "phishing" protection - please that's a neat little trinket, but it's not "Superior Software" by any means. MS has a list of sites they feel collect information from users who visit them and warns you not too. I doubt MS will provide anyone outside of washington with the specifics as too what qualifies a site to be added on this list.
The manage add-ons is kinda neat, but unnecesary imo.
All in all I think IE7 will be great, not that I really care though since I use Safari 99% of my day.
Considering Alias has a write-up about their software and Lucasfilm, Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) http://www.alias.com/glb/eng/community/customer_st ory_details.jsp?itemId=6600001 what was Discreets software used for? I noticed on the discreet site they have a list of movies coming out this year, but I haven't seen most of them (hitch hiker I saw and Charlie I want to see)
Taking a look at the System Requirments for the more well known 3D Animation apps we see Alias's Maya and Softimage's XSI run natively under Linux. Which when you are dealing with animations that can take literally days to render for production it's no wonder they'd want to use a Linux machine instead of a Windows machine, I'm sure it cuts the time by at least 30% (totally grabbed that number out of my ass)
So is it news that the big animation companies also use OS X instead of XP too? I think the only big name 3d animation company that is Windows only is Discreet with their 3ds Max software, which I think is really only used for games, can't think of a movie that it was used for.
Interesting. I work for a Real Estate company and when we list Square Feet we use "±" in front of them (like: ±3,000 SF) to designate that it's approximately 3k SF. This probably came about because people at our work verbally say "plus or minus 3,000 square feet" and so they adopted writing it as "±3k SF" even though that is apparently the incorrect use of the symbol.
hmm? I have a +/- symbol in front of my 40, is it not showing correctly on your browser? I used that to imply that we have "about" 40 people in each office.
"now becoming more viable and popular for personal computers....Losing data once due to hard drive failure may be all that is required to convince anyone that RAID is right for them"
I was thinking they were referring to "Joe Bob Home User" who is starting to use RAIDS more, which is true but, as far as I have seen they are NOT using it for RAID1 - (Mirroring and Duplexing) they ARE using it for RAID 0 (Striping) so their system apps/games run faster.
I wonder if that is 17% of actual employees or 17% of actual systems. 17% seems high...
The place I work at has 4 main offices, each with ±40 people. Of the ±40 at each office we have ±4 people in the marketing departments at each who use Apple systems exclusively. That's a solid 10% for Employees/Mac Users. But how many Apple machines is that?
Well if each of the ±40 people have 1 PC, this includes the Marketing dept, since their web related stuff is done on PC's, then the ±4 users each have a Mac, now include the ±3 PC servers in each office (Mail, Marketing, CompanyShare) we have ±47 machines in each building ±4 of which are Mac that leaves us with Macs being 8.5% of the total amount of systems in the office.
Now obviously my company isn't the same as everyone else, but I'd be willing to bet that either that number is fudged in Apples favor a bit, or the numbers reflect PC's being tossed out while unused Macs sit around in inventory for a while. Which I believe could influence the numbers since at my work we only USE 4 systems for the 4 people, but there are 4 G4's that are sitting in storage as "backups" in case one of the G5's goes down, and we don't keep old PC's at all. They get donated soon as they are unplugged.
So since Ortuk is an "Invite Only" community who invited thier Law Enforcement friend? Guess they don't have to worry about getting "wacked" since on the internet everyone is anonymous...oh wait...shit...
I don't use it often, since my job requires more design based software (read: Illustrator, Photoshop, Indesign, Dreamweaver, etc..) However every year my work spends quite a lot of money making sure I have the newest version, yet I don't really know what changes.
We primarily use Word, Excel, and Powerpoint, and with small exceptions of where commands are located and the icons "bubbly-ness", I haven't noticed much of a difference between the 95, 2k, XP, and 2k3 versions. In fact the only difference that really pops out at me is what programs are considered as part of "Office Pro".
It used to be that 95 and 2k came with Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook and Access. Then XP came out with those plus Publisher (which IIRC was someone elses product that was purchased by MS) Then 2k3 came out and is the same but with Visio (which I know was someone elses product but bought by MS).
So does each version just add a new software to the bundle or are there really changes? (changes being more than buubly icons and moving the location of th email-merge command)
And no one complained about the OP's gramemener?
