A while back there was an excellent article on/. that explained how Nintendo's business model was different from Sony and Microsft, and that even though they came in third place against the Xbox and PS3, they were still the most profitable.
I think the major reason for Nintendo needing to have an entirely different business model than Sony and MS, comes from the fact that Sony and MS create, research, develop, etc... a lot more consumer electronics, software, and participate in so many different markets making rediculous amounts of money that they can have one of their singular divisions tank financially in order to gain market share.
Nintendo on the other hand does not do anything other than make video games. They can't possibly ever take even a chance of tanking financially to grab market share, because they don't have other divisions bringing in any funds. I mean when was the last time Nintendo had it's name on a PC, Monitor, Stereo, TV, DVD Player, Cell-Phone, MP3 Player, let alone an OS and Office suite?
I see a lot of people raving about this show saying "It's so great, the original series sucked" etc... I have seen some the original campy series and for a 70s/80's scifi tv show fits the standard Buck Rogers theme.
But now this new series is supposed to be serious - not just realistic (I use that term very loosly) like Stargate or Enterprise but they try to make it feel like a Drama ala CSI or Law&Order. This bugs me to know end.
I can NOT take anyone serious when they talk about Cylons (sp?) in such a overly acted way. Such lines as "The cyons never asked us what we wanted" and "I never wanted this much pressue" and "I'm the best shot in or out of the cockpit" are not good lines, there super cheesy and painful to the ears - the only thing that makes them sound better is the pitiful strong yet weekend voice of a female Starbuck and an old gruffy stern voiced General.
I didn't care for the original series, I didn't like the movie, I didn't like the pilot mini series, and I am going to pass on this new series.
BTW-- back in the OS 9 days, you could remove Quicktime from your system with no ill effects if you really didn't want it running. I'm not sure if that is still possible with OS X, but maybe one day when I'm bored I'll go poking around the system files of a spare Mac I can mess up without worry, and see what happens.
Actually most apps will complain if you do not have QT installed. For example, Acrobat, Photoshop, Illustrator, and World of Warcraft, will all complain if you do not have QT or even the latest QT installed. Some lesser mainstream apps will not even run.
"The commission's case is mainly focused on Microsoft's integration of Windows Media Player into the operationg system and the effects that has on the ability of Real Networks and Apple to get their rival players used."
I buy an Apple System, it comes with OS-X, Quicktime, iChat, iMail, and Safari. In order for most software made to run on a mac (games, office software, design software etc...) you need to have the latest version of OS-X AND Quicktime installed. I can install Media Player for OS-X, I can install various Divx Codecs, and Mozilla/IE.
I buy a Dell, it comes with XPSP2, Direct X, Windows Media player, MSN Messenger, Outlook Express, and IE. In order for games to run I need the latest version of Direct X. In order for my software to run I need the latest version of XP. I can install Quicktime, Real Player, and various Divx Codecs. I can also install Mozilla.
I build a system. It comes with nothing. I install Redhat, Suse, or Mandrake Linux (your noobie friendly flavors) with the default settings it installs the OS, some Open Office app, some media player and some chat program.
Now what is the problem with what MS is doing?
The argument I here is that because Media Player is incorporated it makes it hard for Real Player and other players to work. However on my PC at home Quicktime and Real Player work just fine. If I don't feel like using Media Player I simply change the file associations. This can be done from the noob level of simply clicking the "box" that says "have quicktime play all these file types" and automagically every media file will try to open in quicktime thereafter.
If what MS is doing is so bad, why doesn't anyone go after Apple? I love my G5, but Apple has a lot stronger arm and closed mind when it comes to what is incorporated with OSX and what can be made to run on it than anyone else.
....Ok the article's google trannslation is exceptionally poor at best. But it is basically saying the the WAV files included with windows for various sounds were created with Sound Forge.
OMGWTFBBQ STOP THE PRESSES YOU MEAN THE SOUND FILES WERE MADE WITH AN IDUSTRY STANDRAD MUSIC SOFTWARE AND NOT MADE FROM SOME PROPRIETARY MS PROGRAM?!?!?!?!?!
from those horrible 89-95 screenshots....oh god I'm immidiately reminded of something more hidous looking than windows 311, that blue dos shell menu, and OS 6 - UGH stab me in the face please!
Tabbed browsing isn't something most IE users (who sent feedback to MS) want though - thats why it's available as an add-on and not included in it as a standard feature.
Most IE users who sent feedback to MS want to have various windows open and next to eachother without having to switch back and forth between tabs.
If enough people actually used the suggestion features of XP and wanted that, they would add it in.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH Firefox is a revolution of people getting what they want from the web back. With a search bar, adblocking and pop up blocking, and support for all the major plugins ( like flash and java etc...) Firefox is now the most nicest browser out their. And many websites are fixing themselves to work with FireFox.
Thanks FF Marketing department....Those features are in every other browser out right now - and considering that MS is supporting smaller 3rd party companies who make these features available as plugins in their browser is pretty nice. Once again you slashdotters are so blinded by "EVIL CORPORATION" that you fail to see not only how frivilous your claims and arguments are but also you fail to understand that your opinions are a small minority in tech world we live in.
Many website fixing themselves - HAHAHAHA who besides the sites on the OSDN network - HAHAHAHAHAHA
that article was so ambiguous..."some person was searching some site and it was being spidered by some MSN bot and the links were added sometime after"
Yay way to go slashdot thanks for posting the most blatant flamebait article ever - how about for your next post, you repost that routers article about a machine that makes more energy than it uses....
Most of my friends upgrade because they want a faster/bettter system and can at some particular moment afford a larger harddrive, faster processor, or more memory, etc...They see their P4 2ghz and look at that new AMD64 chip and drool, and spend and spend and spend.
For me I guess I'm just different. I don't upgrade when my system seems slow but instead when something actually runs slow. For example my PC right now is a P4 1.6, 1gb ddr333, and has a 36gb scsi drive in it. Dreamweaver, Quark, Illustrator, and even Photoshop run fine. So it may be another year or so before I upgrade anything on it. But then again, I'm not playing Doom3.
If I was playing Doom3 or other games in general I'd probably find myself upgrading this month to a P4 3.06 (max my MB supports), a gb of ddr400, and maybe adding another 36gb scsi drive in their so I'd have a 72gb raid going on.
It's buggy as all get go, the graphics are horrible, there are tons better strategy games out on the market right now. Why on earth would anyone even bother with this game? Because of it's title.
Do yourself a favor and forget about it. If you really are curious warez it or wait a couple months for it to drop into the bargain bins of your local store. It's not worth your money or your time.
if two russians died to make it safer for one american, is it better or more ethical than two americans.
That is totally correct - If anyone other than an american dies in order to make things better for us then that is great. That's why we use "cannon fodder" in our military operations whenever possible.
Well honestly if Spam, Java ads, popups, etc... got to the point where people actually would stop using the internet the powers that be would just....wait a minute - who the hell cares about those things...after all these four things are what the average person uses the internet for currently: Directions, Shopping, Research, and Online Games. Now online retail games won't give issues with spam or popup ads and looking for directions won't give you trouble either if your using mapquest or yahoo maps etc.. Shopping if done intelligently and using trusted sites like macys.com, etc.. won't give you problems.
it's only when your looking for something and having to use google or another search engine that you get into trouble with annoyances. Simply because oyu type in what your looking for and half the returns are fake porn sites, jackasses with usefull domain names running ad sites, and maybe somewhere in these returns is a site relative to what your looking for.
My guess is that in the future search engines will either go away (very unlikely) or they will just get overly strict(read: filter a lot) on what they spider and become less useful because of it.
Of course we could just take the time to find and kill all the spammers and ayone who runs popups and java ads on their sites and cut off their balls....
is there some kind of super insane overly conservative group of people breeding rapidly? It seems everwhere I look there is someone or some group complaining about things that are so trivial in comparison to things like guns and drugs in schools...
I hate both IE and Safari, but at work I had to use them since my Dual G5 with 10.3 only came with Safari installed and my P4 with XP pro only came with IE installed.
Of course i'm posting this from Mozilla which runs great on both machines.
Of course i've noticed some websites like Americanexpress.com and my banks website seem to have trouble with any browser other than IE on the pc (IE on the mac seems to work exactly like Safari)

I'll stick to Stargate and Atlantis.
What if it misses and DESTROYS THE MOON!!!
:D
Then we'll have gone to far and the world will end in chaos, with man living as animals and psychic mutnnnts ruling the world.

I think it's like the term FUCK it can be used in either a positive or negative way depending on what the words are proceeding it or following it.
Such as:
Fuck yeah! (positive)
Oh Fuck! (negative)
Therefore we can use the term Slashdotted as follows:
The site is Slashdotted (negative)
We Slashdotted the site (positive)
Or it could just be the end of the world. In either case i'm going to piss myself and curl up into a little ball on the floor.

So now your upset at MS for spotlighting small third party companies who make plugins for IE and XP....k
Remember the days when IE would identify itself as netscape?
Remember how today Opera, Mozilla, Firefox, Netscape, Safari, and every other browser can identify itself as IE.....
