Well, not exactly...the price got lowered. $1499 used to be the price of a 12" with only the combo drive. Now for $1499 you get the Superdrive. I think it's a $200 price drop.
While it is a matter of national pride, China in specific also sees this as a way to increase the reputation of its high-tech exports.
What I really want to see are low-tech solutions to the space race. Not to prove your own country's superiority but to make other governments look bad. Any large government can throw billions or trillions of dollars to get into space.
What I want to see is some guy get into space by sitting on a huge jug of exploding moonshine.
I doubt the results of a blood test are going to sway the opinions of many partients. They'll just find a way to explain away the results. You'd be surprised how many people know the idea of a false positive.
And I wonder how the results of this test can be affected by time. When someone has anxiety, it's a pervasive thing that affects their daily living. But what if someone hears anxiety-causing info just before the blood test, or what if hospitals and blood tests make you highly anxious? Will the test be able to tell the difference between pervasive anxiety and momentary anxiety?
Hopefully, this test doesn't get used in place of a trained psychologist.
Apple's iTunes is one of the best and also the most frustrating services.
I don't understand the frustrating part. The author tries to make an issue of having to convert iTunes songs into mp3 or WMA. But why would you want to? iTunes also plays songs bought from the iTunes Music store.
The only possible reason to do the unweildy conversion is to get rid of DRM. But the author is willing to accept DRM from other stores and, IMO, worse conditions:
NapsterYou don't own the music, however, and if you cancel your subscription, all the tracks you've downloaded disappear.
Looks like once you start with Napster, you're also stuck with Napster.
YahooHowever, as with other subscription services, you only have access to the music as long as you maintain your subscription.
Same with Yahoo.
...(full disclosure: I write reviews for eMusic)....
Maybe the full disclosure should be placed at the beginning of the article?
What about the bands & artists? Didn't iTunes Japan start without the Sony label? And some Japanese artists bascially jumped ship just to get their tracks onto iTunes Japan? I think that maybe a small number of US bands would try the same.
But iTunes Japan thing might have been a rumor since I don't remember hearing any followups on that story.
A quick scan of ages says that only people in their 20's and people in their 40's are writing. Ok, its not a good sample of 4 people.
I've just turned 30 and this issue just doesn't seem like a real issue. There is too much information for any one person to absorb right now. Even within your own field you'll have to pick an choose. Remember the term "Renaissance man"? Anyone trying to be that now would go insane.
I used to love that shoot-the-cans levels. That is, until I and a friend removed the magnifier(?) lens from the barrel. Then we discovered that if you sat about 5 feet away and pointed at the center of the screen, every shot would get registered as a hit.
Juggling cans with guns is much harder in real life.
What about logins? Don't you ever encounter sites where the login you want has already been taken? Then you have to get the right combination of login and passwords.

Pay vs. Happiness

I've only ever been happy contracting. Get in, get the job done, get out. Get paid twice as much. Establish business identity, take advantage of tax deductions. Very nice way to go. Must be motivated though and willing to SAVE money for the inevitable dry spells.
Get in, get the job done 6 months late, get out. Get called back constantly because you did a poor job.
My apologies if you're not a building general contractor.
With respect to pay vs. happiness, its a continuum is it not?
Pay and Happiness are two different variables. They tend to be positively positively associated because high pay tends to increase happiness. But you can have high happiness with low (or zero) pay.

Wikipedia actually has two entries about Slashdot but I hear the second one is a dupe.

We just need some more homegrown American porn.
Wait...good American porn.
No, this is just a precusor.
The real sign will be when Torchwood becomes a major hit and runs for 15 seasons.
I'll be out buying the DVDs while the seas turn into blood.
Just Say No! ... to Microsoft
I suggest we start a betting pool and take bet on who's next and when.
Unfortunately, I'll first have to get rid of this Slashdotter aura.

P.S. I've got a M.A. in Psychology.
Why not just run an electric charge through the water?
Malware Protection Utility was misread as Malware Production Facility.
My mistake.
Who needs to stage it? Just post your website here and Slashdot will take care of it.
But...please try to stick to things that can easily be killed with the tip of well-placed soldering iron.
