And why do they have a "journal?" I guess I just don't get it. I was expecting a news story, but instead there was a press-release about how cool it was that Gillette was doing this.
Actually, even with the cloudiness of the Puget Sound I'm sure this will be a big hit. The MF'ing power companies have to buy power from you if you produce it:)
Why do you put Sokal in the same group as Schon? Schon was hedging the data to get prestige and more funding (most likely). Sokal was criticizing the social sciences for their lack of rigor by submitting a parody --- which they published without any fact checking.
So let's get it straight: Schon is a talentless hack; Sokal is a dedicated scientist who wants to see more people acting and thinking rationally. If you don't believe me, check out his website. From personal experience I can tell you that Sokal is a good guy. It makes me sick to see people like you lashing out without even taking time to learn about what you're talking about (actually, people like you were the motivation for Sokal writing that piece.).
Personally, I think the whole thing is silly anyways, there's more important things to worry about than one's ability to get high.
Yeah, like worrying that Congress is passing laws that make it illegal to perform abitrary actions that only affect you. Seriously, why is it illegal to smoke weed? Why is it so bad if somebody wants to get stoned, eat doritos and fall asleep on their couch?
How is it that everybody else in the country can tell me that I can't do something that only affects me? That's what it sums up to. This "war on drugs" is really a war on autonomy. As technology increases and globalization continues, we are going to have to give up more and more of our autonomy to function as a society, so we need to protect what little we have left.
So, just to sum this up, legalizing marijuana isn't about getting high, it's about establishing that as humans we have the right to control our own lives and make our own decisions. And no, I don't smoke weed, but I do encourage people to try.
That's the one thing I simply don't understand about modern voting rhetoric. How could we possibly place more trust in voting systems simply because they are electronic?
It's not necessarily that we trust it better, but that it makes it easier to vote. I have four roommates and I can guarantee that at least half of them won't vote just because it would be too difficult to get to the polls. It's not a matter of a better system -- the system we have now is basically the same whether it is electronic or...ehm... analog, but a matter of making it easier for people to vote. What do you think voter turnout would be like if you could vote from your machine at work or home rather than having to fight all the way across town in rush hour to get to your poll? Absentee voting is a great start, but it's still annoying because you have to mail it in. Electronic voting systems offer convenience, which is one of the most important factor in raising voter turnout.
You might try compiling KDE/Gnome and X. You'd be surprised at the speed difference. I have an athlon 750 w/256megs of ram and they are both quite fast. I'm not saying I use either of these regularly (I don't like the desktop metaphor), but I've seen a tremendous speed increase by compiling rather than using the standard binary of KDE.
I'm not trying to troll here, but I never did quite understand punk. What is the purpose? The punks I know talk about punk meaning not caring about anything and not conforming, but they spend all their money on punk clothes and releasing their music on vinyl. I mean, what is the appeal? Just what does punk mean and why is it so popular?
That is really funny. I went to NYU for a year and had Prof. Sokal for mechanics. He's a good lecturer. It's too bad that most of the kids in the class wanted to be engineers....
I worked at a web shop where somebody was fooling with the javascript on Macs. He apparently put in a popup-message that said, "Stop using Macs, you fucker!" in the code and forgot to take it out. This was, of course, fantastic for when we did a walkthrough with the clients on their Mac. For some reason (probably because I was still in high school) I took the blame for this one.
I've had a bunch of spammers faking their headers so that it looks like the spam is coming from my website. This pissed me off, so I tracked them down until I found that one of the losers lived in Ohio. Since I live in Washington, I looked up the law to see how much money I could make off the guy. Unfortunately, an individual can only sue for $500. Considering the amount of effort I was going to have to put into the case, I decided not to sue (just sent a letter telling him that I could) because I could easily make over $500 in the time I would spend on the case. If I were an ISP or served my own mail, I would have gone after him because ISPs/hardware-types can sue for around $1000.
So yeah, you can make money, but the only way to actually make good money would be if you were an ISP (because you could sue every US spammer that sent email to a user). Individuals like me are better off getting a job:(
Definitely not. I work in the Nuclear Physics Lab (now known as CENPA) at my university and I can't tell you how much shit I get from people. They go nuts when they hear the word "nuclear" (or nucular to them;). It's sad that people don't even understand physics enough to know that nuclear physics is the physics of the nucleus (and related thingies, of course). So sad....
If they said could not, and he has come up with an idea which means they could that I would agree that is novel and new.
In the article it says that the Microsoft rep said that they didn't plan to do this and didn't even know if it was possible. That's the rub. He's got 'em!
Not that having a GUI is bad, but I am sure that the kernel crew wouldn't put out a graphical-only interface. I'd be willing to bet that a majority, or at least a significant amount of the linux boxes out there with custom kernels don't have X. Think of all the servers and such. You would be screwing a vast majority of admins and really f'ing up command-line installs like gentoo. I'd be down for a nice graphical interface, but one that was only a front-end to the real program.
Yeah, but the 46% of patients who weren't helped by the splints can then go and get the surgery. What do you do if you're the 20% of people who the surgery doesn't work for?
The desktop-ish thing I use for my system has pie menus. They are actually very good. Check out further. You have to get it from cvs, but it's rather fun. It's an animated-ish desktop-ish thing based on the evas libs. I'd give you a screenshot, but I don't have anywhere to put it. It uses pie-menus for frequently used programs (at least that's the way I set it up).
Well, at least the comments won't nearly be so bad. All those

comments will have to go. Other than that I don't see much change.

Some companies actually deliver brand name spam (fresh in the can!) over email.

Quoting Linux from his post
Ah, I was wondering who they named 'Linux' after...

Thank you. I laughed out loud.
This was developed in the 70's -- it's called cp.
(None of the cables are needed because spending a couple grand on an entirely new computer is unnecessary to install *n*x.)

Sometime within the next two years, researchers will detect the first signals of gravity waves....
Wow. Somebody has a pet theory.

No dude, that's the lander.
They'd better not call it "Atomic"

.... But outside these fault-tolerant environments, the symptoms of disease and decay have already started to appear.
Tell me about it. I just checked my webpage, and all my <br> tags had decayed into <blink> tags....
Anyone else have any good examples of pie menus?
