I'm not a programmer or anything, so I'm sure that all the developers get sick of hearing this sort of thing, but I'm really sick of these commercial video codecs. THEY ALL SUCK! Quicktime, Windows Media, Realvideo, and all the wannabe codecs are all TURDS.
Can we get a status update on some free alternatives? Xvids and Divx videos both work fine for me both on Linux and Windows, but all the others seem to require ibuprofen...
It's much worse than that actually.
Criticizing the President is one thing - but what about criticizing the President's policies?
Do you ever mention smoking pot or underage drinking while online?
What about criticizing corporations? Or complaining about poor service at a local store?
"...openness makes the system vulnerable, Mr. Tenet said."
Taking quotes out of context is fun!
Anyone have a phone number or email address to complain to? I had planned on buying Half-Life 2 but I will probably skip it because of this BS. Although writing a letter seems like a bit much, I'll be glad to email or phone in to let them know that they won't be getting my money.
At least Id Software hasn't screwed up yet. But Blizzard and Valve won't be getting any more of my money anytime soon.
Who says there has to be a business model? If you are an artist, you can either waste your life trying to become a rock star, or you can give your work away. Of course, a successful free project could easily lead to paid gigs.
Stop worrying. Grass-roots produced, bittorrent-distributed, creative commons licensed media will replace TV eventually. I have several friends who do pro-level video that have projects in the works. They will be free. If you don't believe me, check the new Wired magazine - Beastie Boys are putting out Creative Commons licensed tunes. Old school media conglomerates will wither and die. But we have to stop supporting them first.
I'm not sure, but I think there may have been a stretegic element to Kerry's concession speech. Here's what I'm suggesting: Kerry says legal battles are bad, let's work together, you win GOP. George Bush responds by agreeing that we all have to work together to rebuild after an era of partisan BS. Now, if Kerry is found to have indeed won enough electoral votes, Bush must either stand by his word and "work together" (concede the election and accept defeat), or break his word, incite a nasty legal battle and possibly drive the nation into a "cold civil war" of sorts.
Kerry set himself up nicely even if it was unintentional. He also came out with integrity and patriotism bolstered regardless of which side yer on.
US gets the money (Since IT companies and shoe companies are US-based financially).
How does the US get the money? We assume that the Nike corporation is paying taxes, which would benefit the US economy, which should eventually create newer, better jobs for Americans. Of course, any respectable corporation cooks their books so that taxes paid are minimal, and governments (both state and federal) are constantly giving tax breaks as well. Anyone know where to find out how much taxes a corporation pays?
Right Now your Instant Messenger program notifies you of an incoming message by a flashing icon or a pop-up window. Imagine that instead of such intrusive displays, ripples emanate from the corner of your screen, like throwing a rock in a puddle. Careful control of the desktop environment can make the difference between a pleasant experience and a headache!
I realize that this is only indirectly relevant to transparency, but all these posters complaining about eye candy and "I'll turn it off right away" sound like simple Luddites. "Eye Candy" advancements like these are improving the Person-Machine relationship and can help just as much as any other advancement by making computers less intrusive, and probably by increasing productivity and creativity as well.
It looks like NYC is gonna get wild this week. Please post as many photos and first-hand accounts as possible. Any helpful or relevant links would be greatly appreciated. Let's just hope nobody gets hurt!
Residents of the other states can vote third-party until their fingers drop off, and it won't affect the outcome in any way.
Unless, of course, a majority of people vote for the third-party candidate, in which case the third party candidate may actually cause Kerry to lose the election.
I believe that "apathy" here refers to the state of the subjects of the nation, not the leaders of the nation. American leaders are indeed aggressive, but the population of the nation has historically been rather apathetic (of course, the coming election will likely change that - expect record levels of voter turnout this year due to the closeness of the race).
how does the ACLU make life more dangerous for a 70 year old mother or a ten year old child? this is not a flame or a troll, i'd like to hear some enlightened, honest criticism of the ACLU (since I'm considering joining).
Please don't mod the parent down just because you disagree. THX 1138 is slow, deliberate, cerebral, and careful; and most movie fans (especially those who prefer the quick pace of modern cinema) will indeed find it boring. Those of us who prefer movies that stimulate the mind over those that stimulate the adrenaline glands and genitals will find THX quite enjoyable. The parent post still makes a valid point: many people (slashdot readers included) will find that THX 1138 doesn't have the kind action that they like.
My office has recently instituted a new policy: employees are no longer allowed to bring paper or pens to work. Unfortunately allowing people to bring these instruments is just too much of a security risk, and the data we work with is extremely sensitive. You can get around the ban by getting approval from a manager and then checking the equipment in with security, but you also have to consent to being searched at any time.
I support some sort of Mandatory Military Service, where every American would be required to serve one year in the military at age 18, or immediately after high school. It would provide *extremely useful* on-the-job training, and would completely change our attitude towards war. Not to mention that Americans would pay closer attention to all things military.
The government should not give $30 million dollars away for spaceflight when we have unemployment, poverty, unequal healthcare, violent crime, drug addiction, cancer, and AIDS - all of which would benefit *us* far more than space travel. Oh yeah and then there's also the fact that the market is taking care of the space thing already.
I've been using Linux for a while now, and have been interested in moving to wireless for quite some time. I'm hesitant though because of all the problems that can come with cutting edge hardware in Linux. It would really help if a few Linux users who have tried a lot of wireless gear could make some hardware recommendations for the rest of us.
What are some no-headache brands of wireless gear for Linux? What brands should be avoided? Are some distros better for wireless than others? (I realize that some of this may be in the linked article, but the article appears to contain a complete list that requires a lot of time and effort to sort through).
Oops. What I meant to say was, is it possible to have firefox or thunderbird use a single set of config files on a dual-boot system? I would think a couple of symlinks might do the trick. It sucks to have to reboot just to send an email!
What is the price range for Linux-supported touchscreen hardware these days? Is it very difficult to get them to work? I'd love to experiment with this sort of thing but online info is sparse at best...
Actually, counterfeiting money is more like fraud than stealing. But either way, counterfeiters decieve their victims and deprive them of money that they believed they did in fact receive.
Is it stealing to look at a painting that someone made? What about to photograph that painting? What if I describe the painting to my friends? None of these are stealing. The artist made the painting and upon revealing it to the public the artist loses all control over his work. In the modern world, this holds true for music as well. Once you release your music to the public you lose all control.

How does phone use in Korea compare to phone use in the West? What IM service/protocol do they use mostly? (MSN, AOL, Jabber?)

Actually this is a great idea, not unlike the scripts that automatically generate what appear to be mp3s of major commercial artists.

we've got to get up off our arses and stop just talking about it!
Hear! Hear!
I agree. It's action that counts, not words, and we need action now.
Hear! Hear!
You're right. We could sit around here all day talking, passing resolutions, making clever speeches. It's not going to shift one Roman soldier!
So, let's just stop gabbing on about it. It's completely pointless and it's getting us nowhere!

is it possible to use thunderbird / firefox and have them share a single set of config files? is there a tutorial anywhere showing how to do this?
