... that some of us have more important things to spend our money on that bloated and useless software and subscription based "services"?
I personally think we're moving away from spend our money on "thin air" because we've learned through experience that it is not economically supportable over a long period of time. It was perfect for the Clinton administration, but it's reality time and we're paying the price for his shallowness.
Long live REAL services and REAL value. Other than that I'll save my money for my family like a responsible individual.
I have a complete AS/400 sitting in my basement (510 series, no joke, inherited from a friends business) that could hold several computers and all their components...
Can anyone say "wow, imagine a beowulf cluster of these things!"... (ba-da-bing)
But seriously, I guess it would be pretty neat to make a self-contained cluster computer inside a 400lb (that's where the AS/400 comes from) slick black case... I'll have to get out the torch and give it a try someday.
Unless someone wants the thing... U-haul/pay shipping of course;)
I use the Opera 6 beta in Linux at home and under Windows at work and IT WORKS GREAT. I normally wouldn't use anything other than IE5 (generously provided by The Beast) except that the Opera 6 beta gives me ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING I LOVED ABOUT IE...
They have a version for the MAC OS, and I recommend trying it today.
Isn't supression of this sort akin to the supression the Nazis encouraged?
Also, though the Nazi movement is an embarrasing (to say the absolute least) stain on the history of mankind, is not not nonetheless a piece of our history.
I would hate to have our children forget about the horrors the Nazis caused, and censorship of this kind seems to be aimed at that.
I say take a break from the computer room, or use a laptop, or maybe turn the computer OFF every once in a while if you don't like the noise, but hey, to each his/her own.
Considering these standards for wireless networking:
HomeRF 2.0 10 Mbps
802.11b WiFi 11 Mbps
802.11g 22 Mbps
802.11a 54 Mbps
what makes you think you need a 100mb WAN link? How many computers will use this WAP?
This is a perfectly valid on-topic argument with no flame-bait, no trolling and no crap (i.e. "imagine a beowoulf cluster of these pay-for-content sites!")...
So why, pray tell, was this modded down to 0?
I personally think that the parent was right on the money- we're charged enough as it is, and with everyone in the world wanting to take their cut out of the consumer it's becoming too much to bear. You can't get blood out of a stone.
And BTW, as much as I love and admire Slashdot, I would not use it if it cost me the $$$ that I use to feed my family and live in a home- besides, it's made by the users, just as the parent said, and without us SLASHDOT WOULD BE NOTHING
When I wrote (and I sent to all the addresses I could find) I politely requested an email reply stating their position on the matter and their reasoning behind their actions.
I got absolutely no reply. Instead of responding to their users they hide behind an arrogant self-important "FAQ" document?
As much as I hate them, I think I would have prefered a form letter.
Dear Sir or Madam:
It has been brought to my attention that your company has encouraged
the website located at http://www.bnetd.org/ to discontinue service.
In your letter to this company you site a violation of the Digital
Millennium
Copyright Act (DMCA) as your reason for requesting this cessation of
services.
As a consumer it is greatly disconcerting to see companies abusing the
scope of this unconstitutional act. Blizzard has long provided exceptional
entertainment in the gaming industry, and it is sad to see such a blatant
attack on their own customers rights and privileges.
http://www.bnetd.org/ has provided a service that increases Blizzard's
popularity, customer base and coverage. Pursuing legal action against
them will be very damaging to Blizzard from a public relation standpoint.
As a concerned consumer and Blizzard customer I would appreciate a brief
reply stating your viewpoint on this situation, as well as the steps
you are willing to take to restore customer confidence in your company.
I thank you in advance for your time in this matter.
Since you apparently have the opportunity, why not get them started right. When choosing your software solutions, make sure you go with open standards, not proprietary ones. Also, follow the FP's advice and get used HW if you can... or at least not the top-of-the-line.
Perhaps it's just my freedom-fighting hippiness, but I'd take an opportunity like this and run with it (as I have here, implimenting 4 Linux servers in our NW/NT environment).
So now we're going to have a bunch of yuppies talking to their fingers while they drive.
Does this mean people are going to get pulled over for talking on their cell (in areas where it's illegal), when all they were really doing was picking their nose?
...A developers edition (which means it has a different color case).
It's a piece of junk. It has no end-user benefit over a palm III series. In fact, it is generally slower and harder to use than a palm III. Despite it's 66mhz processor the thing just did not perform. It's a device so unattractive (from a software/hardware POV) that only a true linux geek could even accord it pity enough to use it.
If Agenda Computing keeps up their MS-style practice of pushing their products to market before they've matured, they'll continue to find themselves where the are now- in the hole. Heck, they didn't even bring anything really new to the world...

I'm waiting to see this new format? When does it take effect?
... that web advertising doesn't work. Any slashdot reader can tell you that.
Does this thing run java?!?! (pun)
I had to say it.
Only a few states away, in Portland Oregon...
But I am serious about giving the thing away...

Here's a real (non trollaxor) link to a site dedicated to silent computing....

+1 Funny
Come on guys, this was a joke. Don't you get it (any true google-lovin' geek would)?
Does everything have to be on topic around here? The beowulf thing is a standing Slashdot.org joke and I find it humorous.
Please mod parent up.
Wow.... I didn't think they'd actually mod me down, heck I was hoping to get modded up for being funny in my reply...
Don't you moderators have a sense of humor? It was an honest mistake- honest!
(P.S. Now you mod me up for having the nerve or sheer stupidity to post AGAIN!)
Mod me down for being a moron! I posted this comment while reading a freakin' Register article! DOH!
If anyone is interested in WHAT THE HECK I AM TALKING ABOUT please check out this article at The Register
It's going to be a long day....
... what precentage of those in opposition were slashdotters. I know it was this slashdot post that got me on my toes.
Can it be that slashdot is effectively preserving our rights and liberties? It's nice to know that right is slowly winning out in all of this.

Agendaroids on the Agenda VR3d and Bomberman on the Turbo Duo.

What an injustice... what a travisty....
Je me suis plutôt demandé si il y avait des gens qui parlaient en français sur slashdot... volia ma reponse!
C'etait une question assez bête je suppose, et un essai assez miniscule d'être "funny". Je ne vois pas que ca va etre "moderated".
