Outlook hasn't been suceptible for years. It's just that people are still running versions of OE and outlook that are 4 versions old and never updated them.
GNU tar is not the same as standard UNIX tar (i.e., UNIX tar is missing the -z switch in your case) as another reader has pointed out. You should know that before complaining.
You probably want gzip -dc file.tar.gz | tar xvf -... works like a charm *every* time.
tar zxvf will work on Linux but not on many unixes.
E.g.,
User Commands tar(1)

tar - create tape archives and add or extract files

tar c [ bBeEfFhiklnopPqvwX@ [0-7]] [block] [tarfile]

This is on Solaris 9. A very modern Unix OS./dev/rmt* is the standard tape device. (TAR = Tape ARchive)
Well in any case it should be a non-issue. If you are running Windows correctly, you're not running as a member of Administrators but rather a regular user with all the permissions correctly set. This way you can't inadvertently destroy data that should be secured (e.g., programs). In any case, I have grown tired of attempts to trivialize the would-be damage of worms on UNIX systems as "oh it will only trash/home/user" -- as if that's not bad or something!
(Also of note is that most people sending these worms unbeknownst to them are home users, not corporate users on multiuser systems.)
in which case it can infect only things associated with that user
This is one of the weakest re-used arguments backing UNIX. Let me ask you, what is more important, the programs in/usr which can be restored off the OS CD in a matter of mintutes, or the irreplacable data under/home/user???
What I don't get is whether or not the GPL allow you to take software, add a few function calls Call_From_Closed_Source_Library();, link against said closed library, and redistribute for $$ w/o distributing source for your closed library...?
And how could I forget Zeus, which runs the majority of high-volume, high-bandwidth Linux sites, not to mention a good amount of pr0n sites and what have you. (Ex: eBay uses Zeus along with IIS)
I still don't know how to copy a zip file created by WinXP to a floppy disk. Any ideas? Trust Microsoft to screw it up
Yes, take your computer, unplug it, place it back into the box it was delivered in, and ship it back to the factory.
You mean like this?
Outlook hasn't been suceptible for years. It's just that people are still running versions of OE and outlook that are 4 versions old and never updated them.
Alt-Shift-Shift-Esc... now that's a toughie.
Uhh, the entire keyboard fires teh same interrupt, if I remember correctly.... int 09h I believe.
I didn't know Kurt Vonnegut read Slashdot.
Does it work with Mono?
Back in the real world, FreeDOS is about as useful as a deep-freeze in the Arctic circle.
Actually DOS is still widely used... mainly on POS systems; take a closer look at those computerized cash registers next time you waltz into Kroger.
If you want a GNU environment I suggest you use CygWin instead then.

And here it is...
Well, naturally :)
They are using Wind River's vxWorks.
Says here he uses NT
You mean like the tons of Unix and Linux apps set to run suid root that have been exploited over the years? ;)
Searched the web for local root exploit setuid linux. Results 1 - 10 of about 15,400.
If you think such problems are limited to Windows, you are sorely mistaken.
So just run those apps as a sudo, or... ahem... "Run as..."

I guess you haven't been to Europe lately... kids are given cell phones when they're half-way through the womb.
Could it be because one GUI toolkit arose with ease of use and programming in mind, and the other arose simply to make a political statement?
Which is why you need Tweak UI and tick the box for "Use Windows 2000-style search dialogs."
=)

That looks like they ripped off the XINE project; wouldn't that be violating the GPL?
I know the GPL allows you to charge ($40?), but shouldn't Lindows make the source available?
And how could I forget Zeus, which runs the majority of high-volume, high-bandwidth Linux sites, not to mention a good amount of pr0n sites and what have you. (Ex: eBay uses Zeus along with IIS)
Ask yourself this: Name one other webserver for linux/*bsd.
Roxen, thttpd, AOLServer, SunONE/Netscape...
No way! Outlook launches a web browser when I click a URL in plain-text emails too!
Except it launches Firebird.....
(Just setting the record straight. I suppose you don't have your system configured correctly?)
