The feds/police will still do it but if you complain they will say you were asked and complied. No force needed. Your word against theirs. Judge probably knows the cops on a first name basis. Who do you think he believes?
With only one more year of Windows 7 support, my wife and I are getting nervous. I can probably shift over to Linux on the desktop full time and ideally turn my current windows 7 install into a vm file. I read a howto guide on using vmware to do just that, so I'll have to try that out sometime this year. I figure I can play my older windows only games and editors in a vm setup. I already use linux as a server so I'm no stranger to linux, just never took the full time dive.
The wife on the other hand already can't stand Win10 at work so she doesn't want it at home. She's not an Apple fan but she does use numerous windows only applications for photo editing and not running those apps is not an option.
I'm debating about upgrading her Win7 computer to Win8 to give us another 3 years of updates. Does this sound like a good idea? Is upgrading to Win8 as a stopgap better then just going to Win10, or should I just bite the bullet?
You pick where to live. No one is forcing you to stay in a poor state with lame job prospects and no hospitals. A large portion of the population in even "rich" states like California are still just as bad off as the poor sap that lives in New Mexico. At least in NM you can probably afford a house instead of a cardboard box.
I'm super lucky I'm even in my own condo. I bought in 2010 and could definitely not afford to buy my home at today's prices. Honestly, piss off with increasing my taxes to help out-of-staters when I plenty of homeless people that need help on my porch.
Besides, we already have federal income tax and the riches states already do tend to give more to the Feds then they take in. It's not our fault your local state governments can't better organize themselves.
What if your kid comes to you as a teenager and just really wants to know the their ancestry. Dad says sure. Results come back and gee, looks like mom cheated and got pregnant. If dad doesn't already know about this, that's a HUGE big deal. I mean, if the wife lied about that, who knows WHAT she is capable of.
Has nothing to do with the daughter really and dad doesn't love daughter any less. Obviously the child is innocent. BBC literally just did a long write up on this topic. Was a decent read but don't be surprised if skeletons come out of the closet. People like to mess around.
Yeah, we should of totally just let Saddam gas his own people. They were just the Kurds. Totally not people like us.
Heck, we should of just not got involved in WWI or WWII, because clearly there was nothing wrong with a government murdering it's own people.
While lots of bad things happen because of our actions, we also provide a great deal of stability and security in the world, despite the wars we involve ourselves in. If we were to just up and close most of our overseas military bases, the world would definitely become more violent.
Russia would love it if we just pulled out of NATO and closed all our bases.
To be fair, if we cut our defense budget in half, the "savings" would be best spent paying off our debt. Cutting the military budget in half just to spend it on social services still has us all individually owing ourselves about $50k each.
I guess the debt doesn't matter though right? Neither party ever talks about it when they are in control and have the ability to change it, so clearly government debt is not important.
Until it is. Hopefully I'm dead before that happens, but I'm not even 40 yet, so I'm probably screwed.
Pretty sure in California you can register to vote without declaring a party. Of course you can't vote in the Dems or Repubs primaries if you don't declare for one of their parties.
I'm a registered Democrat because it's more important to vote which primary candidate I can accept then worry about which republican candidate I can accept.
Ideologically I'm a Libertarian but that's a waste of time to belong to that party. Parties are useful for their primaries, otherwise you can vote for anyone on the ballot in the general election. Hence, my wife and voted for Gary "what's a leppo" Johnson because he wasn't Hillary or Trump (plus in California, if you don't vote blue for president, your vote essentially doesn't matter anyway).
There are tools like Diaspora* that essentially let you setup your own little facebook that can even hook up with other Diaspora* shards. At one point I thought about trying to get my wife and all her friends to migrate over to a private Diaspora* shard with paid hosting.
Was to hard a sell to the wife so I decided not to bother, but it definitely looked like a viable replacement. Not sure it supported all the games which was a deal breaker not to mention I don't want to run a social network site for fun.
If I was at all interested in having a connected house I would look into openHAB or Home assistant. Both appear to be open source. Pretty sure you could use a raspberry pi for your home automation server quite easily. The same device could also host a vpn service so you can ssh into your home network and screw with your LoT devices if you need to.
It's all neat stuff and if I had money and time to burn I would probably add those features to my condo but that's only a maybe. LoT is mostly technology I do not need. Sure, some of its neat and I could see the value in it, but only if I rolled my own.
The idea is better to under pay, save/invest that money and then when tax season comes you pay precisely what you owe and no more. The last thing you really want is the government getting a free loan from you.
Besides, with tax refund fraud increasing, I doubt someone will try to file for you only to be told they owe, which you would already know.
It's like not using an escrow account to pay your property taxes and home insurance. Better to pay the bill in full right as it is due so you can maximize the use of your money. Much better for me to have thousands in my saving account to pay the property taxes then for some company that handles the escrow account to sit on YOUR money to pay the bill for you.
I got a lousy 1.5% raise, but it was a raise. Got the same raise last year and the year before. I've put it all towards retirement. Shrugs, I'm glad I got it but it doesn't make me thrilled either.
The time you save not going to the store, dealing with customers and sales staff, the parking lot or the drive home from the store, not to mention gas and the potential of getting in an accident makes paying the Prime membership worth it.
Like bill_mcgonigle my house gets at least 3 deliveries a week. Well worth it.
Earned can be interpreted as revenue and revenue is not profit. Profit is revenue - expenses. So you could earn money as a business and still overrun your cost and would therefore not make a profit.
That's how a business could EARN money without making a profit.
Are you a Prime member and still don't get free shipping on items under 29 Euros? That's crazy to me. It may be that living in San Diego I have a local distribution center so getting stuff is really fast, but I'm quite sure we have no minimum price to hit for the free shipping.
Just strange how things like that are different in different parts of the world.
Why isn't buying a reusable water bottle an option? For what you spend on cases of water, you could likely buy water from a water store in 3-5 gallon refillable containers.
I'm able to buy 80 gallons of water for $20 across the street from where I live. I go over, fill up my 5 gallon water bottle and then we have good quality water for drinking and cooking. If you don't cook with it, how long would 80 gallons of water last?
If you were to buy $20 of water bottles, you probably only get about 5 cases on a super cheap sale (includes CRV). Or in other words, a bit less then 16 gallons of water AND you produce a ton of plastic waste.
It's a great option for better water and less waste and you save money.
Don't forgot the wasted energy to truck the extra trash to the dump or the extra energy used to recycle the water bottle if it was separated ahead of time. That water bottle that should not exist definitely waste lots of energy just so a company can profit at the expense of your environment.
If they were really green they would buy a reusable water bottle. We buy drinking and cooking water from a local water store and refill our water bottles. What really pushed me was the sheer amount of plastic waste we were generating.
I do what I can to be sustainable and green but it can be quite disheartening. From plastic bottles to SUVs to single use anything. It's all wasteful and its cost more too.
Many products do in fact have a stamped on "born on" date. It's not as forthcoming as the "sell by date" but it does exist. Offhand I know some beers will have a "born on date".
That's unfortunately why there is no real reason for me to leave San Diego. All the places I may want to move to for cost of living and lower taxes are well on their way to being made into California, but without the awesome weather San Diego has.
I would tolerate snow for a better overall standard of life, but that's not actually available anymore unless you really go to the middle of no where.
I'll just stay in my condo and dream of a massive market crash as it will be the only way I will get into a house. EVER.
Luckily, it is coming. Bought my condo in the last crash and can't wait for the next crash to get into a small house.
Except that's really how bad some of the areas in LA, SF and SD actually are. Hell, we had a really bad hepatitis outbreak in SD because of our homeless problems. This stuff is actually happening.
I can't comment on Texas but being in San Diego can definitely comment on California and SD.
Yep, and none of this will stop the police from holding your skull in place and forcing your index finger onto the phone to unlock it. They aren't afraid to get handsie and they tend to come in enough numbers to overwhelm you. Not to mention defending yourself against the police just gets you in more trouble.
The feds/police will still do it but if you complain they will say you were asked and complied. No force needed. Your word against theirs. Judge probably knows the cops on a first name basis. Who do you think he believes?

I'd mod you up if I hadn't already responded to this thread. Well said sir.

But there are options.
Keep up the good work comrade.

With housing and autos, you are compelled by law to cover the loans and potential damage you may do to others with the auto.

We use to have brownouts back then. I haven't had any issues in my area of San Diego for quite a while. You are still right about all you said though.
Except that's really how bad some of the areas in LA, SF and SD actually are. Hell, we had a really bad hepatitis outbreak in SD because of our homeless problems. This stuff is actually happening.
