    and yes when the RIAA/MPAA comes knocking on the door of the hosting provider in Barbados the hosting provider is going to stand up for your rights to break american laws rather than shut your site down because the RIAA/MPAA threatens to shut down their whole business. Whether they actually do have the power to do that, who knows (money talks) but the ISP is most likely pretty small and has more to think about than your warez site.

    it's you that doesn't know what he is talking about. it's the RIAA/MPAA/Entertainment Industry's view that if they give entertainment away for free that they can't survive. This proves the opposite. the parent poster was trying to be funny.

    i disagree with public transportation. I use it by choice to avoid the headaches of traffic. waiting for the bus in the extreme heat or cold for a few minutes is a small price to pay for sanity.

    i would say cellular phones are probably second down the list. not the phone or the service itself, but any time you need to contact the company providing the service.

    i do hear the second one quite often and before phones were de-mystified to the regular joe i heard similar accusations of "the phone" being ain instrument of evil.

    This article does NOT have the tone that wireless networking is a bad thing. it has the tone of "people who use other people's wireless networks for anonymity can do bad things"

    I move around a lot, from state to state, probably once every year or 2. during the time I am waiting for my cable modem to get hooked up in my apartment i usually use someone else's wireless. I don't download torrents and crap like that until i have my own connection, but sure I'll surf the web and check emails while waiting for my own internet to get hooked up. If they leave it wide open they are asking for it.

    Then of course when mine gets hooked up my wireless network is secure. because i don't feel like being an ISP to freeloading jerks like myself.

    i don't think codewarrior and xcode are your only options. you have the standard unix development environment as well (yes i know this is encompassed by xcode, but it is possible to use gcc & company outside of xcode)

    Depends on what you call "core". Darwin is BSD. Apple didn't open-source it - they took opensource code and used it.
    His exact words are: The core of OS X is open sourced.
    Not: apple wrote something and released the code for it.

    Nowhere does he claim that it was closed before apple got it or implied that they were the origin of the code. You inferred it all on your own.

    Have a look at the apple's firmware [apple.com]. Have you any idea about what partition system an apple box would use (so that you can dual boot Linux) ?. They just mention that it is different - that's all.
    Do PC manufacturers release documentation on how to boot linux with their hardware?

    have you ever actually watched cartoon network? specifically adult swim... it's very light on commercials. i think futurama and family guy only have 2 commercial breaks each during the whole show. i think this would fit very well. and if parents are going to freak out they are going to freak out over the juvenile behavior displayed in family guy (which i think is the best show on tv btw) and not over the cerebral stuff in Evangelion

    you know if you are authorized or not before you download. and if you don't you belong in a hospital.

    people aren't stupid. EVERY SINGLE PERSON that downloaded any movie on the net knew that while it was not expressely illegal in their country that what they were doing was UNAUTHORIZED. every single one of them. find me one person that didn't and i will show you either an extremely mentally challenged person or a liar.

    if you think this law was passed in 1 day you're insane. this law is unrelated to the big busts yesterday. this has been in the cards for quite a while. It was just a coincidence that it was finally approved the day after a major bust. Sweden's not a scary and oppressive environment. it's one of the freeer places i have ever lived and hope to live there again when I retire.

    Sure it will. It changes the RIAA (and other like organizations) opinions regarding a certain country. If a country is seen as a haven for pirates RIAA-like organizations can pressure them to make laws forbidding piracy. When they do, they are satisfied that at least something is done. While, you're right this will not get rid of the downloading, it will give *AA much more leverage.

    the law is clearly against pirating. when people download music they know if they are pirating it or downloading it from a legitimate source. or are you claiming you can't tell the difference between pirating or legitimate downloading?

    i am a yank that formerly lived in sweden, hope to go back someday. where are you living? I was in the Trosa area (45 min south of stockholm on the coast) Yes i am aware that Trosa is the singular form of the swedish word for panties (trosor)

    Copyright would be hopeless - they could just claim that they had coincidentally thought of the same idea.


    But what if they had coincidentally thought of the same idea? They get sued because someone came up with it before but never even put it out on the market. The fact that 2 different entities came up with it should put it into the obvious category. All of this is irellivant because the story is like saying that chevy can't make cars because ford did it first. Some things are obvious. A mobile charger/transmitter device for a portable audio player is one of those obvious things.

    swedish is not that hard to learn (take it from me, an american that lived there for 2 years and learned the language sometime during the first), and sweden is also the land of 100mbit internet connections for around $40 a month :D

    there is a antipiratbyran (anti-pirate beaurau) but there have been scandals involved with them, such as planting pirated software on corporate computers in order to get themselves in the news.

    New laws are being considered there that would help crack down on sites like the pirate bay, but they are not there yet.
