However it seems to me that the "look and feel" of a program is covered by the GPL. Thus it is in much the same boat. The case in question is when a developer added features that where almost exactly like those found in another vendors products.
If I produce a Windows application that looks just like KMail, would I not be in violation of at least the spirt of the GPL?
Because when you "buy" software you are infact just buying a license to use it within the terms set by the seller. The same is true of books.

Why should shrink wrap licenses be any less binding then say the GPL? Should a closed source vendor be able to look over GPLd software code to see how something was done with the intention of using it in their products?
Until hardware exists I cant use ogg. Its that simple. I'm not going to convert my MP3 files so I can look at how shinny the CD that contains them is. If I cant play the CD on my MP3 player I dont care.
So rather then fight to get a law you dont like changed, you should just ignore it? Sorry but in the real world that wont work. You need to have some legal baises for actions such as this or you will end up in court defending your self rather then attacking the law you have a problem with. Patents and copywrites are both methods of protecting IP, one for ideas the other for direct implamentations. I fail to see how you can be in favor of one but not the other.
Please explain why only "massive companies" can get a software patent. I know several small time devlopers with patents in the feild of virtual reality. Are they "massive companies"?
Did I say that? No it would seem I did not. Are you projecting perhaps? Not everyone is a code theif. I simply dont like the GPL and wont touch it. That says nothing about contributing back to a project or even if I was going to charge money for my efforts.
I do indeed remember. I used to write simple games while in high school. Now I'm looking at making a simple Ultima Underground clone and the amount of work that needs to go into the graphics is staggering. Finding an open source (not GPL) graphics engine and picking the 3D modeling tools alone has taken months, and we still have not found a solution we like.
Just a few more years and the transition to featureless games with cool graphics but no game play will be complete.
It's already at the point where the graphics department in a game house can be larger then the development team.

Why is using one platform, regardless of it's appropriateness, just for the sake of using it, a good idea? Shouldn't a company or group look into all options and decide on tools that are the best fit for what needs to be done?
I fail to see the problem here. I live in the area in question and know about the system of which they are speaking. It is in no wy required. If you dont like it, dont use it. Why do people have a problem with this? If no one uses the service because of data colection the service providers will go away or change the service to fit the requirments of the consumers.

I just picked up a few Compaq Remote Insight boards on ebay for about nine dollars each. Seems to be a good system as it allows remote power on and access even after a power outage thanks ot a battary backup.
