I recently noticed my laptop power cable/transformer gets quite hot when left overnight with the laptop totally off but the switch not turned off at the wall.
I've had it for a couple of years now, hate to think how much electricity I've wasted (and the resultant bills increase) being on almost 24/7 over that time!
If you were having thoughts of anykind, "low-level pseudo-consciousness" or whatever, you would NOT be cryogenically frozen. Thoughts require large amounts of chemical reactions to occur in the brain and the whole point of cryogenics is to stop chemical reactions from happening as they are also what causes ageing.
So by the very definition of cryogenics you would be thoughtless and completely unconscious for the entire time. Apart maybe from any wake-up period which possibly might be required during reanimation (not sure if its called reanimation?, I just remeber that word from Austin Powers).
See this is why shares are so unpredicatable right now.
The fact that an irrelavant mass-media news report which has absolutly nothing to do with profitability / performance can have a greater impact on a companies share price than a highly relevant future profitability / performance report shows something is not right.
This is not the way business should be done. Regardless of the possilibities for corruption by media executives (who by the way are getting quite involved in tech companies) share prices (and the livelihoods tided up in them) should not be dominated by the publics voyeuristic news appetite of the day.
When business finance and investment starts becoming so petty, crashes start taking place.
Has the Games industry been having chats with the music industry or something?
Its sounds to me like exactly the same sort of "I know our products suck at the moment but if you guys gave us more money we'd make better products, honest" line.
Firstly they are expensive to the user, as you have to wait for the response to come back before being able to move onto the next page and secondly being expensive for the web server does indirectly effect users.
Sure your one redirect query may not effect you much but tens of thousands of people doing it could slow a server right down.
In the UK, college means "technical school" or in the more commom definition: "the place where the dropouts who couldn't get into a university go".
Although some universities do have several "colleges" and a college can also be a place where people take the exams (and the related course) to actually get into university.
And thats where the problem arises. No matter how much you care about lobbying congress, a company with a few million to spare on lobbists and campaign funds is going to get further.
Well they missed their chance with fm radio. But I guess its alot easier to buy politicians (legally) these day and so looks certain that yet more of our rights are being 'tuned out'.
Seriously, I don't see why media companies should be allowed to stop me recording radio transmissions. Sure they have to make money (and my god they make a lot) but I often record radio shows so I can listen to them later. Whats wrong with that?
I think its a simple case of: Ok, your machine is good but we want to make an even better one.
The hypothesis drawn by the story submitted is ludicrous. It's like wondering why are newer, faster computers ever released as there are already computers around?...It's called progress.
"Freedom does not mean freedom from your parents -- it means freedom from tyranny"
Do you not remeber being a kid? your parents ARE the tyrants! We may not think so now, but most of us certainly did when we were kids. I don't understand how you can expect American values to be instilled in children if they are brought up under a complete totalitarian system. Most likely they will end up as self-concious, spolit, whimps unable to make tough decisions for themselves just like so many of our youth appear to be growing up as.
One parent could supposably afford to stay at home 25 years ago because people won't nearly as materialistic back then and owned far less. Most lived in smaller houses, owned only one car (many didn't even own a car), went on smaller and less frequent holidays and ate food which many today would reject as being below standard.
Its called progress, the majority of us choose to have both parents working for the economy and then the family, along with the entire nation, all reap the benefits the increased productivity offers.
I think the problem is the way the mainstream media love the healdine grabbing nature of child molestation to the point that the average parent or even governments are unable to rationally equate the risk of molestation against the need of a child to live a fullfilling childhood, have decent teachers, a sense of freedom etc.
In America especially the media have developed this into a situation where no-one cares if a child's childhood is taken away from them through over-protective parenting and their life prospects ruint by rubbish teachers and over-protective teaching methods so long as the risk of molestation is supposably reduced.
Its all beside the point anyway, because as you point out statistically its hundreds of times more likely for the offender to be a close friend/relative.
I don't understand, the first half of your post declares that everyone should have the freedom to live and bring their children up as they please and the the secound half proscribes a very objectional 'guide' about specifically how parents should raise children. If you ask me it represents perfectly the typical hypocracy of current day right-wing America.
For starters, how is a child meant to learn how to live a full independant life if (especially when they reach their teens) they have to first check off with their parents everywhere they go and everyone they speak to. Doesn't sound like the raising of a very 'free' generation.
Also, you state that one parent should always be at home so that you don't have to subsidise other peoples child care, but having a prent at home to supervise children IS highly subsidised individual child care. Half the pricey sick-pay laws in this country centre around the case that if the primary income earner is off-work the household has no incomings.
"Holes in scientific knowledge do not prove science wrong. Holes in religious knowledge do not prove religion wrong."
I understand "scientific knowledge", but what on earth is "religious knowledge"?
Religion is about faith. Its about trusting in something which cannot be proved right or wrong. Trying to search for "religious knowledge" is only going to end in disappointment as it is either going to end inconclusivly or most probably with the eventual disproving of the "religious knowledge" (as occurred with the "religious knowledge" items of the world being flat, only several thousand years old, being created in 7 days, etc etc).
"I've seen articles with definite left-bias, similar to what I'd expect from any geek forum."
Given one guess I'd say your a right-biased American. In which case, don't you realize that pretty much any website which has contributors from any other country in the world is going to appear 'left-bias' to you.
Personally, I'm sick of articles in Wikipedia (mainly articles pretaining to famous individuals) containing outrageous criticisms levied from extreme right-wing commentators on Fox News.
Suggesting that maybe the Fox News ticker stating "Oil slicks found to keep seals young, supple" is false, is not a valid criticism in my opinion.
I think the problem may be that we live in an age where although gender equality is an emerging phenomenon. The difference between the male and female stereotypes you mention is that the male stereotypes characterise positive features which enhance their own personal physical ability (i.e. the big muscles).
The female stereotypes on the other hand characterise features (e.g. big breasts, tiny thighs) which do not actually deliver any positive benefit to the character themselves. In fact, big breasts tend to cause painful back problems (not good for Laura when she has to do constant aerial flips and stuff) and thin thighs decrease stamina and physical strength.
I think there is defiantly a stark difference, the male equivalent would kind of be weasily stick thin characters with no muscles but great hair and an absolutely massive penis (something I've yet to have noticed in many games).
Thiefing Bastards!...I'm talking about the music industry. They won't stop till they've got every last cent.
Deprieving artists of a living my arse. I'd like to see them try find an artist who makes a living from selling lyrics!
Surely any real "artist" would prefer people actually understood the lyrics they were singing rather than deprive all their fans for that one in a million customer who is crazy enough to actually buy a songbook purely for the lyrics.
I'm simply disgusted at the pure greed of music publishers!
Even if this research carried out by the University of Innsbruck doesn't have immdeiate application it still another step on the difficult road towards Quantum Computing.
Actually The Sims (original version) became one of the best ever selling games thanks mainly to males buying the game. Most articles on the matter (do a google search) state that only after this initial male uptake when sisters & girlfriends started seeing brothers & boyfriends playing the game did The Sims become one of the first games played mainly by girls. Only then also did EA realise quite how much money they could make from the female market for the game and start advertising it in woman's magazines and other female orientated media - making it the "girly" game it is today.

"Unless we lobby Congress to put things right!!"
And thats where the problem arises. No matter how much you care about lobbying congress, a company with a few million to spare on lobbists and campaign funds is going to get further.
Indeed, it reads just like all those "employers decide whether they will employ you in 50ms" studies.

How exactly the law 'protect' children?
Does it prevent that oh so common problem of enemies jumping out of the computer screen and shooting kids with their RPG?
Arn't there laws againt blackmail?

"they all have jobs in the education system"
Its good to know we only have "about 10" sex offenders in the country then.

"Because no matter how many things science does explain, there will always be *something* it doesn't"
Indeed
Although the key addition to that statement which ID/creationist advocates fail to grasph is:
"Because no matter how many things science does explain, there will always be *something* it doesn't [yet explain]".
Oh, how original, how deep. Just the thought of thing that makes you feel like your in an "alternate universe".
There not really "Electric Engine"s either are they?
Calling them Electric Engines would mean calling pretty much every engine around an electric engine.
Plasma or Ion engine's would be more descriptive in my opinion.
