I have been on the inside of several large companies who shall remain nameless...
It is not so that they can have a "stable" or "easy to write" driver, it's so they don't have to release under the GPL. Remeber, if it hooks in the kernel it is supposed to be released GPL. I attended several classes on how to write for linux, and not have to publish under the GPL. These large companies want to protect thier IP.
When did DRM turn in to a violation of the constitution? This is about control, Mr. $teve wants to be able to control where his OS goes. Yes people are gonna figure out how to flash their bios and get the TPM to work etc. Do you remember that apple got pissed off when people figured out how to get OS10.3 on a biege g3? or worse on a *gasp* clone? I'm sure that you and all of your pot smoking cop friends will be able to download 10.xxx from whatever source you want and install it..
People are getting miffed because apple is making money on open sourced software, and controlling where it goes. I for one am not a huge fan, but I also realize when you start allowing people to install an OS willy-nilly, you will have problems, remeber, most people in the world are morons.
back in 1999/2000 starbridge//http://www.starbridgesystems.com/> systems did the same thing, except it wasn't vaporware...
Using FPGA's for ultra fast computing is nothing new. Using them to "test" other chips is standard, it's far easier to write VHDL than do it in silicon first. With the advent are super hi-speed gates numbering in the millions, it's a wonder somebody hadn't come up with a generic reprogrammable cpu for the desktop. maybe they have but places like intel and amd kill innovation like that
Look, just because it says 64bit, doesn't mean it has a 64bit instruction set!. the EM64T stands for Enhanced Memory Technology. It allows you to access more than 4GB of ram, that's pretty much the end of it. IF you want a 64bit machine, I suggest you go get a Sun, a Power5(not the wimped out G5 machines) or a Mips proc. For those of you on a budget who want true 64bit stuff, go and get a DEC chip...
I was at IDF, first, It does look like the mini-me, but, unlike the mini, it's designed as a set-top box, Secondly, it's not even the same color....
For those of you who are screaming "knock-off" well does anybody remeber the cappucino machine? if anything $teve J0b$ ripped off the cappucino machine...
Well looks like apple is gonna lose again:)
First and foremost, you are full of shit. You have no idea what you are talking about and quite frankly you are probably spreading FUD for AMD, I SAW the Intel CPU today, it is no bigger than the standard CPU, and for the mobile version it runs very cool.
AMD on the other hand has just shown tricks and no real proof of their DC cpu.
When you buy a laptop, it IS proprietarty! Can you go to Fry's and just buy a laptop Mobo? or how about a case?... So, while we are at it, Why don't we just start cramming in non-standard batteries into our laptops! You buy a laptop for it's current features, not it's upgradabillity. If you want to expand it, there are USB/1394 devices that will allow you to do that.. I just went to fry's and picked up a junky 9.99 usb2.0 G adapter...
Many people who run corp laptops have found out that aleast since the T30, IBM laptops will not boot with a non IBM card, Well, if you have the utility you can put any mini-PCI card in there....
They make alot of money with there cards, so you can understand why they would do this..
What I don't hear about is apple and there slots not taking anything but "AIRPORT" cards? why is nobody bitching about that?
The shear fact is that the EU is totaly anti-american, be it Bush jr, or MS. Ok, I'm not a fan of bill's little crappy os'(writing from a g3 with osX on it) but lets look at the "anti-competitive" aspect of it.... 1 Do consumers have choice of what OS comes with the G4/G5?(if you said yes, think again) 2 Can you buy Linux based computers from OEMS(if you said no, go back to the end of the line) 3 IS Linux the answer to all of your problems?(maybe, but it still won't stop those pimples on your face) The EU is a very angry organization, infighting, always stabbing each other in the back. If you are SO anti(whatever this minute) Stop using windows. You have half a brain make that choice! Look I'm not here to defend M$, but I don't think that we should start forcing people to ditch something they are used to either.
I agree and disagree at the same time.. MS has done some damage.. That part I will agree with. However, Netcrape is a horrible browser, It now FORCES the AIM on you, tracks your every move ( this is all on windows mind you)and crashed more. On my unix systems I still use netscape sometimes, more over I use Lynx (it's THE ONLY STABLE BROWSER). Look at AOL/TW They are a Megacompany, Bigger than MS.. What do you think would happen if AOL/TW got ahold of Redhat? Whould it be a blow to MS, not likely. It would be a blow to the opensource community tho. Remember AOL/TW is part of the RIAA, and the MPAA, so just think about that for awhile
Oh Stop beating your chest...
Look the fact is this.. You are dead wrong.. With out Microsoft being around I doubt you or MANY other/.ers would be using computers at all. I'm not a huge fan of MS either, so don't get me wrong. MS has pushed(forced) the development of faster computers. I bet you wouldn't even be "on-line" if it hadn't been for MS. Aol/Time Warner has done MORE damage then MS could ever. Hmm you don't like MS... Don't use it! Up until just a few years ago there was no choice of what OS to run on Macintoshs, If you bought one you where stuck using 0S. whatever... Hmm when you bye a Mips based SGI what comes on it ( and NO you can't option Linux or BSD from the factory) Hmm What about a Sparc... hmm once again NOPE... factory stuff You all have a choice, Use MS or don't it's up to you. I'm tired of hearing all of this MS bashing! Grow up people! Oh and as far as your claim of "I feel that Microsoft has done a great injustice to the world of computing and to the world at large by its flagrant anti-competitive behavior" Just think back to Apple and the Clone wars... and BTW, No I'm not in favor of this suit, it's just another drain on our tax dollars...
If you think of it this way, RIAA is hurting the economy.. So is ASCAP and BMI Webcasters let music be heard that may not have a venue elsewhere,be heard. In turn the listeners are interesed in the band, they go out and buy the CD(which pays BMI and ASCAP), In turn the bands have to play more shows... In turn they buy new musical equipment, to play more shows where more people are coming,In turn the clubs make more money and continue to have live bands. If webcasters are charged outrageous fees, then we can't play the music, thereby shutting us down, the bands don't sell any CD's the clubs don't make any money, the music stores don't sell equipment. Pretty vicious circle... my site www.nw-radio.com doesn't sell records, we let people hear music that they may not have any idea is out there... So Why should I have to pay RIAA or BMI or ASCAP for helping THEM ?
What about small "non" label driven webstations? I run one of those Stations We only do unsigned bands in the North West,I've read the ASCAP and BMI agreements, even if I don't do any advertising, Or make any money from the site, it still costs me money . Ascap and BMI have had a strangle hold on the industry for years. If they had their way, All the sites that carried "free downloads" from the artists ( yes some bands give you one or two songs free) The sites would have to pay for every song downloaded.
Well first Windows98/ME doesn't do MP... ( yes they promised that it would )2k and XP( evil) does do MP, yes there is a dramatic improvement in apps like Photoshop, Quark, and even some games. Unless you are NEEDING MP, there is no valid reason for it, Servers sure. High end graphics stations(2d/3d) sure. Quake3 no. The problem lies with the code, people get lazy and write sloppy bloated code (min install for XP 1.5GB...)Look for example my Newton2100( yes I know many of the 15 year old/.ers have never seen one)Pound for pound smoked many of my desktops because the code was written really well, or look at QNX.. you get a gui, a browser, and some games on a FLOPPY! ( can we say 10k kernel) it will run on a 386 with 8mb of ram ( no hard disk needed)The simple fact is that Any M$ OS is bloatware, and Linux is becoming the same thing ( you used to be able to install a complete distro from a floppy) now look at it,How Big is my kernel ? wow... Yes I realize that more *features* are being added to the core , but do we really NEED them ? couldn't we add them in later ? We need to get back to a more optimized system, the way linux was in the *old* days . This constant bickering about "who's got a faster proc" reminds me of the old flame wars between macs and PC's. Get over it, I doubt that many of you/. people have ever used anything older than a 486/66. You have no idea what it is like to run an entire company on a Xenix system using terminals ( it was a 386/16 with 16mb of ram) having to ask everyone to log off so that you can run a report... LONG LIVE VMS !!!
ok , I gotta say something to this one.. First THEY DON'T MAKE A DUAL p4 board, The new dual boards are for the new Xeons, and Yes I've played with both , and the P4 Does smoke the AMD, however the price on the Xeon box makes it hard to swallow,But if you REALLY NEED dual procs, why are you trying to do it cheaper ?
Do remember this: Numbers Never Lie, Liars always use numbers. For those of you who are battling FOR intel OR FOR AMD think about this... Most web browsers will run on a P100. Obviously both groups have been lead around by numbers that are only realistic in a lab( or in tomshardware, his living room)Don't buy something because the numbers look good, buy it because the performance meets or exceeds your needs. I'm very happy with my almost 10 year old SGI's ( indigo2,indy,onyx) and even more happy with my new ones O2+ Octane2 , Origin 200. My X86 box is almost 2 years old(733p3) They fit me fine . So don't bicker about who has a faster machine playing quake3.
Slower ? When is the last time you used a G4, I do own 1, my G4 800 SMOKES my P3 1.1 Gig and my friend's AMD 1.2.. I'm not trying to start a flame war, but for graphics the mac will always rule, Adobe and other companies optimize for the PPC. Me I stick more with my Unix machines than either my mac or my peecee. But hey , I need the power.
I would go with the new sun blade1000, 1. it costs 1000.00 2. it's 64bit ( umm hello world amd and intel are both 32bit..) Or you could go to ebay and find a nice used SGI(under 500.00 ) . I'm sorry , but intel and amd put together don't have the power of a sun or a SGI . Plus most apps that run on linux, can be compiled to run on IRIX or Solaris

Geez slashdot is turning into DIGG where every moron can post "the truth"

So go cry me a river you sack of poop...
I know for sure(can't say how) but this will never be officially supported under linux(or *bsd) don't waste your time on something that isn't worth it
well, now hypervisor will allow multiple BSOD all at once... how fun
back in 1999/2000 starbridge //http://www.starbridgesystems.com/> systems did the same thing, except it wasn't vaporware...
