Maybe the question you meant was which is closer to "correct". If you consider correct to be closer to the root of the evolutionary language tree then the Brittish are probably closer since the Americans' language changed more quickly since the split.
Is that an assumption on your part? I thought it was the language in the satellite countries that changed the least. And the language in the original country that changed and evolved the most.

Yes, I'm aware than an AC beat me to it, but he's at -1 right now, so I'm posting this because it's more visible.
Tell us what picture you are posting next time. I thought you were following standard Slashdot procedures and posting an attractive picture of the nerdy female in question.
I wonder in which category you would put a clearly marked Tomahawk missile hurling at 550 MPH and traveling at a very low altitude so that noone sees it coming. And how about all the American ex-military "civilians" stationed in Saudi Arabia to protect the House of Saud? Would you qualify those guys as terrorists if their participation went above and beyond training, but if they were actually found to have participated in black ops and unofficial clean-up operations within Saudi Arabia?
I only brought up those two examples because out of all the examples that were cited, they were the only two that I really knew about. May be someone from Chicago or from the other cities mentioned can talk about those as well.
And as to Turkey and Iran, they're both cheap examples to begin with. Nowhere there is more government regulations than Turkey and Iran. You can blame the death toll on lack of building regulations, I can blame it on buildings made of stone, lack of wealth to build anything else, and an overly oppressive government in each country. In the end, who would be right? I don't know. In any case, I'm pretty sure you know very little about building regulations in Turkey or Iran.
The fire-part was because of the ensuing riot. The mayor of San Francisco was so afraid that San Francisco would lose its reputation that he had the riot covered up.
"Without building codes, 10 X more fatalities in the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake in California. "
Please note that the overwhelming majority of people who died during that earthquake were located on *government* built/maintained structures (i.e. the Oakland freeway and the bay bridge).

George bush invaded Iraq and all I got was this lousy $2.25/gal gas.
This is in reponse to your signature. Be careful what you ask for. Bit by bit, Bush is trying to break OPEC by invading OPEC countries and/or spurring coup d'etats in those countries.
But in reality, there isn't anyone who is secure enough, trustworthy enough, powerful enough and smart enough to pull off a system that would work and would be trusted.
Visa International (formerly Bank of America) did. If you can have one credit card that can be accepted at most merchants throughout the world, then you can have one login mechanism accepted throughout most major web sites.
Microsoft could learn a thing or two from Visa International. For one thing, Visa couldn't get going under the umbrella of Bank of America. Most merchant banks didn't trust BofA. Visa had to become its own separate and distinct organization and it had to be controlled and operated by all merchant banks, not just one merchant bank.

Your best bet: check out the duty free shops at JFK airport. See if any of them sell laptops. If so, buying one there will save the sales tax, and the customs fees.
Except duty free shops are very expensive and their 200% markup will usually eat into your 8.5% tax saving.
In the US, those shops may be worth it when you're buying alcohol and cigarettes, but even then my Costco outlet is almost always cheaper.
Not sure why this warrents an ask slashdot when a quick search found this:
Most foreigners don't know where American buy their electronic goods. For instance, I had a French friend who wanted to buy an MP3 player at one of those little tourist shops. He's lucky he had me along to stop him and drive him instead to Circuit City. Those little tourist shops are shaddy, avoid them at all costs.
Btw, Gateway stores carry very little inventory. Gateway is first and foremost a mail order/cutom built establishment and I don't think they would carry laptops. Another source would be Best Buy, The Good Guys, Best Buy, CompUSA, and Frys Electronics. But I'm not from New York, so I'm not sure if all those chains are down there as well.
"First off, I'm assuming you want a mail order dell laptop. The simplest way to go is to get a mailbox in New York via a company like The Mail Box or a UPS store. They give you a full address that is not a PO box, and they will sign for packages for you. Pre-pay for 1 month. That's step 1."
Nice try, but you need a US address to open one of these. Remember the 911 terrorists used a Mailbox etc. and even before that -- Mailbox etc. still required you to have a valid US address.
Another option is to book a one-night stay at a reputable ($$$) hotel and make them deliver the laptop there before you get there, although that might actually eat into all the money you were about to save.
Imagine what would happen to today's economy if Bill was pissed off enough to dump everything?
He couldn't. First, he would have notify the public and then his portfolio would plummet before he could sell them.
And even if he wasn't forced to notify the public before he sold, he wouldn't be able to sell very much. You have to remember that a company is only worth something because 99% of the shareholders aren't willing to sell below a certain price.
I can wait. I'm holding out until it drops down to $49.95 + 2 free bonus games.

Obviously, it's not a lack of buzzwords or acronyms, or ZDNet/CNet would surely have mentioned that.
Animals try to survive and reproduce wherever they can. Who are you to say that animal care or don't care?
Yes. One doesn't even UML. Having the person who wrote the code explaining it is usually enough.

Is there actually even *one* virus that exploits OpenOffice?
It depends on the tree, but they could get $40,000 at the most.
Just watch the tree-huggers try to save them now.

I guess you don't have a Visa card and you don't want to know how many merchant bank members Visa International really has.

Step 7: shout DAMNIT when you realize that all your word documents get corrected to American-English.
By looking at the time stamps of the software files.
In any case, as long as you're white, you're not going to get stopped at customs. In fact, they hardly stop anyone.
Oh yes, and be careful about porn. I remember a story on Slashdot a year back about them scanning your hard drive for child porn.
