The starting salary for toll takers at the Golden Gate Bridge is 65 k a year. When anyone else can do the same job for half the pay, that's what I would call being overpaid.
The average real estate agent makes $300 a year. That's right, that's not a typo. 300 dollars a year. Anyone and their brother can get a real estate license. Anyone and their brother can try to sell high-end luxury homes. Most people will try. Most people will fail.
The class argument makes sense, but even being in the right class doesn't guarantee anything.
You could have IBM apply for this patent, or you could have some less scrupulous company. For all intents and purposes, IBM will never make a penny from this patent.
How do you know this? I am not saying I know the answer myself, but I think you're jumping to conclusions.
Can't point the blame at the operating system for not having particular software available for it. Point it at the producers of the non-ported software.
Why do you feel the need to blame someone? Blame implies that someone did something wrong. The parent post doesn't blame anyone, he's just enumerating reasons for chosing one OS over another.
It's not open to me. I just filled in the form and my request to look at the source was denied.
In any case, some people say that the Flash player is open source because the swf format is open, but that's just like Bill Gates saying that the Internet Explorer is open source because the html format is open.
Prehaps things like the FTC should have one individual who they try to get on every mailing list / get target by spammers.
Why wait for the FTC to put themselves on their mailing lists. Just get the contact information of influential members of the government and sign them up for all the promotions you can find.
That's why we have zoning laws of various degrees. There are communities that mandate the number of orange trees that are allowed in your garden. If that's what you want, may be you should move there.
The later versions of Flash are not compatible with the previous versions of Flash players. Macromedia claims to have a penetration rate of 98% for its Flash players, but that figure is misleading because this includes every single versions of its Flash players and people still need to download the new players if they want to play the new movies.

The problem is that people might bail out of Flash on just the press release alone
Why? Did you trash your Macromedia Dreamweaver when you first read the press release on FrontPage? The problem is that Sparkle will have vastly different goals than Flash just like FrontPage had vastly different goals than Dreamweaver.
May be the transmitter can be used for other legal things. In any case, near my place all the receivers are coupled with live cameras, so it would be pretty idiotic to try to use one of those things.
"Can you imagine the nightmare our roads would be if everybody had one?"
There is a misconception about those things. On the boulevard I live near, they just installed those remotes for "rapid buses" and they're now advertising this feature on TV.
The remote control overrides the proximity detectors, but it doesn't make the red light go green immediately. From what I've seen, it only speeds up the cycle of the green lights, nothing more. So, contrary to what they have been advertising on TV and contrary to what the slashdot submitter is implying, the bus may still have to wait for a couple of seconds at the light.
Perhaps, the emergency vehicles are another story, but as far as I can tell, none of the emergency vehicles in my city have used this feature as of now. They still are running red lights and blowing their sirens.
I think the parent was making an argument for open source by saying that the exploit would never have been found if the product had remained proprietary and the people that implemented the back door could have used that back door forever and ever.
"In this case, nobody likes banner ads, and everyone selfishly wants to block them. If everyone did this, content on the web would be diminished, "
Content would diminish? The lack of content is not our main problem right now. In fact, we're being overwhelmed with content and we're being overwhelmed with noise.
"...because fewer people could afford to produce web content full-time, and more content would go to subscriber-pay sites. "
What's wrong with paying for content? Aren't you the selfish one now? You would like others to be manipulated into buying things they don't need, so that you and others could have access to content you need without paying for it.
"Or worse, the advertising will become more embedded and harder to filter out, even visually. "
Yes, that's a good point. I agree that this will happen a little more quickly now, but since banner ads are not that effective even if we don't block them, I think we were already heading in that direction.
"Yet if everyone co-operated by not blocking banner ads, free web content is made available to everyone."
That's an oversimplification. Not all content is created equal. The more is not necessarily better. And somebody will have to pay something to make those banner ads profitable.
And don't give me a lot of crap about "someone will figure out a better business model", unless you can actually point to a particular website with that model, that is succeeding.
Amazon, Ebay, porn sites, speciality web sites, web sites that enhance ones professional reputation, non-profit web sites, government web sites, some university web sites, hobby web sites, etc. By the way, I am including many non-profits because they are also creating content.

I agree completely. None of the successful real estate agents have character. Ethics and this profession don't mix.
The class argument makes sense, but even being in the right class doesn't guarantee anything.
I prefer Home Depot myself.

When negotiating a business transaction, showing that you have the power to walk away is not pushy behaviour, it's assertive behavior.

.NET couldn't replace Java so now they're going after Cobol.
I'd give my voucher to the Disney Corporation. They've been ripped off on Mickey Mouse one to many times.
I feel the same way about my horoscope. At first I don't like it, but then the day goes by and I find my horoscope was completely accurate.
Don't be silly. Here is the change in question.
Dreamweaver / Flash Goals: To provide web designers high quality cross-platform development tools.
Frontpage / Sparkle Goads: To make an extension of their current operating system and office suite.

My bet would be on some poor schmuck who didn't like his company.
Too late, I'm the next in line and I'm putting up a porn site.

First he was told Linux was free and now he's receiving letters from SCO.
This guy wants so much to work at Microsoft. It's not even funny.
