Hey, it's Thursday, time for another story where Microsoft says it's taking aim at Google.
JFC, Microsoft, just give it up already. You lost. It's over. Your search portal will NEVER catch google. EVER. The only thing you can hope for is that there's a prolonged power outage that hits all the Google servers, thus driving people to MSN search.
Even *IF* MS's search is better or bigger, or whatever. Google is in the lexicon. It's the first stop for a million percent of people who surf the web, and it's pretty decent. Nothing short of a week long power outage would disconnect the millions from doing their search at Google. Saying you're aiming to overtake them just.. makes you look foolish. Like you don't have anything better to spend your money on. Which is probably true.
NOT better treatment. The installation from Midwest Fiber Networks for Milwaukee will only be for a SIGNAL, not access to the internet. -- If you want to surf, you'll need to contract with an ISP who will provide the 'net over MFN's wireless signal. -- In other words, BFD. It's NOT a free wi-fi type rollout.
The media did a crap job explaining this, as it is the equivalent of shooting a new satellite into space. Everyone can get the signal, but you need to subscribe to actually get value out of that signal.
Hate to admit it, but MSN's Virtual Earth is a better product. They both have maps/satellite/hybrid layouts, and do much of the same thing.. I think VE just looks nicer, with a slightly better UI.
When searching, MSN seems to hit up more yellow-page type results than Google, which seems to hit up its web search results alone.
Another huge plus for VirtualEarth is that you can grab and move the map, which will refresh the results of your search.
I'm just totally surprised it took this long for a spammer to be murdered. To be frank, though, I'm totally surprised tons of people haven't been hunted down and killed, in this day and age. There are so many villains out there, from social, political, and even the realm of sports, who arise such hatred.. it just boggles my mind there isn't one nut job who gets so fed up they go out and hunt them down.
I just don't have THAT much faith in humanity to do the right thing -- all the time.
Fleecing of America..

I'm sorry to all you tin-foil hat 802.11 receiving guys out there, but this is a huge waste of taxpayer money.
I live in a state that has these grand taxpayer waysides, that, while being a wonderful place to take a dump, are a luxury for a state that has cronic budget deficits and are one of the highest taxed states in the nation.
Adding wi-fi to the wayside crapatoriums will indeed benefit a few people looking for some highway p0rn, but again, it's a total luxury for a small population of folks who bring their laptops on the road. -- And no need to respond "hey, *I* bring my laptop on the road, so there must be others." Face it. It's a small population.
Not to say I'm (completely) against taxpayer funded hot-spots.. but come on.. put 'em up where there's a steady population of users.
This was certainly a huge waste of time and money, and the plaintiff should be ashamed.
It reminds me of last year when I got my house painted. A few days before they came out, they stuck a sign on my lawn that basically advertised their services. True, I didn't appreciate that they didn't ask me to stick this physical sign in my lawn, but I understood that's how they advertise. I'd rather they do that than take out a $10,000 Yellow Page ad and charge me more for painting.
Gee, I wonder if there's a market for my old product, BEPOSS. When I was at Marquette I wrote the Book Exchange Point of Sale System in, none other than, TURBO PASCAL, as it was back in the late 80s, before Windows had taken hold.
Indeed. I've long stopped buying new printer carts. Printers are disposable now.
There's just no point in buying black and color ink carts for $60, when you can buy a new printer, albeit an "older" model, $60-80 that has the ink already. I've bought about 5 printers in the past 2 years now.
I guess I'm not doing my part to "prevent these carts from clogging up landfills" as Lexmark, et al, would like me to do.
Could you defeat this whole scheme by putting an entry in your hosts file to direct windowsmedia.com to 127.0.0.1? Wouldn't that prevent WMP from ever sending that data?
True, it'd disable the site and cddb ability alltogether, but is that so bad?
I might have written the post you are thinking of. I just want to reiterate, that Spamcop.net (the free version) definately worked for me. I went from 10-20 spams/day to perhaps 1-3/day.
It's as simple as signing up for a free account, and forwarding your spam to them for processing.. they send out Abuse@domain.com letters to whoever they find in the header.
It's easy and slick. Seems to have worked for me. Plus it helps get the spammers busted.
Oddly similiar to the website's authors comment that he had Spam, then Potted Meat on his desktop, I was doing a gig at Harley Davidson years ago and went through something similiar.
I ended up eating the Potted Meat with crackers at lunch on a dare. Mmmm. Potted Meat.
My favorite ingredient is the Partially Defatted Cooked Beef Fatty Tissue.
Can you imagine the guys cooking up the Potted Meat, saying:
"Hey, Larry, this needs some Cooked Beef Fatty Tissue to make it taste right. But not fully fat fatty tissue. De-fat the tissue partially."
Just to clairify, I wasn't talking about using Spamcop.net's own mail services. Indeed, Spamcop provides a service where you can have _them_ filter your mail.
I am talking about their free "Abuse Reporting" system. Honest, I haven't had to report spam in 5 days now. It's really odd.
About a month ago, I started reporting my spam to Spamcop.net.. you sign up for a free account, and every spam you get, you post to their website. (Additionally, there's a utility out there called Spam Deputy that will auto-post selected spams to your Spamcop account from Outlook.)
Spamcop takes the headers and fires off Abuse messages to every domain it finds in the trace of the spam.
The results? Well, I check my email and my wife's, and we used to get roughly identicle spams.. After using SpamCop for maybe 2 weeks, my spam count dropped off the map, while her email still gets hit.
I'd say I've gone from 20 spam/day to 1 spam/day.
It's kinda spooky. Don't know why it worked for me.

Curious about other Slashdot articles about silly patents, I searched, and it turns out we've talked about this patent before.

Again, shame.
Maybe I can find that source code somewhere ..!
You could replace an 8088 with the V20 to get a whopping 7% improvement in your SI score. Woohoo.
Maybe I should swing by and give it a shot.
Hmm. XYZZY? PLUGH? Decisions, Decisions.

I can't explain it, but there's no doubt for me, it's worked. Give it a few more weeks.
