it seems silly to go about redefining something like what constitutes a planet. what possible scientific value could this have? why can't we be content to keep the traditional designations of what make up a planet?

i would love to have a printer on my desk at work! just today i got an email that said, "anyone mind if i tie up the printer with a 1261 page document? our printer is offline..."
i mean, having a printer right beside my desk would also be very handy when printing rebate forms & personal stuff - no worrying that someone will get there before you do and see non-work related stuff...
this quote from that article puts this whole thing in perspective:
In January, the mayor of Rio threatened to sue a weather forecaster who predicted, wrongly, that there would be storms on New Year's Eve. The weather forecast kept crowds away from one of the biggest festivals of the year.
An example more salient to this discussion: if your hood was open, and your windows were down, and your doors were open, etc., would you seriously expect your car to be untouched after you got out of Wal-Mart?
you should always plan for the worst and hope for the best. but regardless of your actions (leaving car windows down) it's still wrong to reach in and start screwing around with stuff.

i don't know about you, but i write my code by making cool 3-D boxes come together on 6 different screens connected to 3 different networks. you people that edit text files are *so* 20th century.
according to NASA the mean torque strength for their astronauts is 13.73 Nm. That would be comparable to the 1.5Nm that this robotic hand can do. i think.
The first version would be completely unedited -- literally every inch of raw footage presented in the order in which it was shot. This would deal for the first time with the nerd paranoia that they are somehow being manipulated by the media.
but this still doesn't allow for what's not recorded... thus introducing the possibility of media shaping.
interesting idea though... i hope PBS goes for it.
I for one would hate to see a union implemented for programmers... programming is such a broad range, i would think it'd be very difficult to achieve any type of cohesion & structure between techies.
The whole reason SV failed is not because there was suddenly no new technology. It's because there were tons of crappy companies that got tons of money and then couldn't make a profit after a few months.
With Wozniak and the like taking time to build companies from the ground up, slowly and with patience & planning, then as these companies will usher in the rebirth of SV as they mature.
A new wave of technology will just bring in over-inflated enthusiasm, which is not what is needed right now.
yahoo! has a bulk mail folder which actually works very well for me. it puts spam in that folder and deletes it on a regular basis.
unfortunately, when i use pop3 access, it treats all the mail in the bulk mail folder as regular mail, and dumps it to my inbox. this is kinda annoying.
so i think i'll just stick with the web access.
With the current state of the (US) economy, it's a very smart move for hp & compaq to merge. in the end, i think the hp families will see that this was in the best interests of the company, since their combined market share will ultimately increase the market value after the merger.
It seems fairly unreasonable to say that you refuse to listen to anything in a particular format even when presented with a way to do so without selling out to the evil one.
I think it's interesting to see the stock prices for Loudcloud since their IPO compared to Netscape's... I'm interested to see how Loudcloud will fare in this new economy.
isn't this it?

i think it's a moot point, because i can't rotate my wrist without rotating my forearm. can you just turn your wrist without rotating your forearm?
even though the robot turns at the wrist, you still need to look at the strength of a human's forearm to make worthwhile comparisons.
it's the desired result that's of concern, whether opening a doorknob or turning a screwdriver, and the method might be different.
