Yeah.. because I don't want to die of a heart attack, I want to die of skin cancer instead.

Malignant melanoma kills more people a year than any other kind of cancer.

  2. Re:One working label? on Apple Plans to Purchase Universal Music · · Score: 1

Could this be a step towards one record lable that won't be total asses about copyright and ripping your songs to mp3 format?

Hah, surely you must be joking. The company that is so protective of it's own IP that it's willing to sue anyone who makes a theme that *resembles* OSX? Or sue someone because they called their product "XTunes"?

If anything, this will be the music company from hell.

  3. Re:Wireless support in RH 9 on Red Hat Linux 9 Release And Interview · · Score: 1

RH8 and 9 don't use wlan-ng but a different prism wlan driver.. It works at 11Mbs, right out of the box.

wlan-ng sucks. It uses non-standard interface names (wlan0.. great, break all my software that depends on eth*) it doesn't support any of the standard wireless network monitoring tools.

RedHat was wise not to mess with wlan-ng.

On April 1st, two DJs were arrested after announcing that eminem would be appearing at a local biglots, causing a huge number of people to show up at biglots.

The DJs were charged with both fraud (because it was an april fools joke) and deprevation of business (because they effectively shut down biglots)

It's only a matter of time before slashdot gets sued for slashdotting a website.

If anything, slashdot is repeatedly guilty of orchestrating DoS attacks.

  5. Re:What apple is missing on A Better Finder? · · Score: 1

What happens now? If the window is open, you must click on the/a file to see the contents update and reorder themselves. Damn useless if you ask me.

YES! I have an iMac sitting on my desk that I use from time to time, and this is the one thing about OSX that I absolutely HATE. I save a file from a webpage and I don't see it on the desktop, and it confuses me.

The fact that finder windows (and the fucking desktop) don't update unless they have the focus proves that Apple no longer does usability tests.

  6. Re:April fools, but on New Whitespace-Only Programming Language · · Score: 4, Funny

I just want to mention that April Fools to me has always been to make up BELIEVABLE stories that you can gloat over later - which really adds to more of the fun.

Right, it's not a successful april fools joke until you get convicted of fraud.

  7. Re:Source of Error on Adobe Says PCs Are Preferred · · Score: 1

He's obviously got an axe to grind. Writers who compare Macs and PCs and *start out* with a chip on their shoulder kind of piss me off.

Now what if RedHat changes it's mind and renames the release to 8.1 at the last minute? Does that mean you would use it?

Now we see the problem of judging an app by it's version number rather than it's reviews.

Reguardless of the version number, either wait until the reviews are in, or try it out on a machine you don't care about. A version number is meaningless.. even the difference between 9.0 and 8.1 is arbitrary.

  10. i must be in the wrong sector on U.S. Jobs Jumping Ship · · Score: 1

I must be working in the wrong sector.. I've never seen a job move overseas. I'm a web programmer. Perhaps it's only tech support centers moving? Or people working for huge multi-national companies? There are plenty of smaller companies looking for people.

My company won't even let me work from home.. they want me in the office because I deal with people from other depts often. I can't imagine they'll ever move my job overseas because my dept is too interconnected to just be surgically removed and placed somewhere else.

  11. Re:I had an Indian Dell Encounter... BAD! on U.S. Jobs Jumping Ship · · Score: 1

1st level techs are highly scripted and you need to know how to break out quickly when the problem is something that isn't going to be in their scripts.

You know, I've always wondered why companies don't just post the goddamn level1 script to their website. I can follow a graph just as easily as any idiot making $7/hr. It'll save us both a lot of money and headaches if I can rule out the level1 tech *before I even make a call*.

I bet this goes well with my digital amp.

I have a Crate DX100 Digital Stack. It's completely software based.. you can download new software and "flash" your amp, giving it new tones and effects.

Jocks tend to work cool jobs like bars and high class restrauants or trendy clothing stores which isn't a bad gig.

Yeah, that's something I've noticed a lot on slashdot. Unless you work in an IT dept, your job must suck.

They don't mention that your mechanic and your plumber and your electrician and your contractor all make tons more money than any nerd in the IT dept.

The restaurant business is also nothing to be laughed at. Cooks and managers make a very good living. Same with bartenders, and car salesmen and real estate agents.

  18. Re:Common sense? on Why Nerds Are Unpopular · · Score: 1

Nice strawman.. that's not what I said at all.

Life is full of moments when you are put into a room with people you don't share interests with.. you need to learn how to adapt to those situations to the best of your ability.

Adapting to your environment isn't a bad thing.. it's probably the most valuable skill that you can learn.

Your booksmarts won't get you that raise.. your social abilities will. Your lack of social skills may get you fired though. I bet "Does not work well with others" is on a lot of your performance reviews. Your booksmarts aren't going to help you meet women. Your lack of social abilities may leave you alone. But hey, at least you have your integrity.

Bingo. In order to make it through highschool you need to be streetsmart. Playing chess during lunch isn't streetsmart, it's like walking down a dark alley alone.

Common sense seems to be lacking in a majority of "nerds".

Common sense says: don't talk about computers at lunch, don't talk about politics in a bar, don't talk about tupperware at a football game.

If you lack streetsmarts, I don't care how much booksmarts you have, you're still an idiot.
