    PHP as a language is outclassed by Ruby and Python, yet they aren't beating it back in the web arena. Why?


    1. Ruby is a bitch to get working with apache. You've got to either run fastcgi (which is out of date), or proxypass to another webserver. They need to fix mod_ruby so that each instance doesn't share namespaces.

    2. Python is stable, but the modules are too fragile. The API for libxml2-python has changed several times... breaking any scripts using it.

    At 320x200... they look like shit.

    Finally, iTunes TV isn't that popular. Even the crappiest cable program got more viewers in a single night, than iTunes did all of last month.

    This machine is 6 years old, and runs Quake 4, Doom 3, and Halo like a dream.


    It's not 6 years old.. you've upgraded everything but the case. I have a 10 year old case.. wow, my 10 year old PC (upgraded to an AMD64 3000, gig of ram, and gf6600) is amazing!

    Three years from now it'll be even faster!

    They couldn't do that. They'd be bound by renters laws.

    You know they started doing that in Law & Order. Just a random thing that made me laugh.. whenever someone would be like "I don't know if I should give you that information", one of the cops would usually try "It's OK, we're authorized". Worked most of the time.

    If there actually was a $2.7 million deal in the works, his business partners would've had copies of the screenplay. The deal is always for the rights, never for the actual manuscript itself.

    It must be marketing spin to describe the iTMS as a lock in service.
    When the fact is, every single song you buy from iTMS, you can remove the copy protection just by burning the song to disc


    For now.. the fact is that Apple has removed rights with every version of iTunes since the iTMS launched and they've never granted extra rights.

    It's only a matter of time before Apple removes your ability to burn those songs to CD.. that's what we mean when we say "vendor lockin". Apple retains *full* control over your music and can (and does) change the usage policy of that music at any time.

    Exactly. When people talk about "insecure windows" they inevitably bring up Spyware.

    There isn't any spyware on a mac, this tells me there's a lot more credence to the "no marketshare" argument than most people think. Spyware doesn't rely on any security holes... why isn't there spyware on OSX?

    At least iTunes lets me burn the songs to CD as many times as I wish.


    At least Microsoft licenses WMA to third parties so that purchased music will play in my in-dash car stereo, my dvd player, and multiple portable music players from multiple companies.

    A correction, users are not in the admin group by default, only the first user of the machine. Subsequent users are by default not administrators.


    Only the *majority* of OSX users are in the admin group by default.

    Frankly, even if something happened with iTunes (an app I do use) that bugged me, I'd probably just find an alternative mp3 player/library manager, rather than switch platforms.


    If you'd read Mark's followup you'd find that what really pissed him off was that Apple decided to "upgrade" *all* of his email from mbox to a proprietary format when he upgraded to Tiger. Without telling him. Apple literally took all of his mail hostage. They did it to you too if you use Mail.app.

    It took me about a day to get the graphics system to work on the machine (X11 - text was fine). And by work, I mean "display at all."


    And yet OSX won't even install on that same hardware.

    MacOS is becoming less refined with every release.


    No kidding. Here's a simple example:

    Click and hold on an icon in the dock. What happens? The Context-Sensitive menu opens.

    Now click and hold on an icon on the desktop. What happens? NOTHING.

    Talking to a passenger does not offer the same level of distraction because they're there with you, can see road conditions and will STFU when things start to get hairy.

    And the guy on the cellphone isn't going to shut up when you yell "oh shit!" all of a sudden?

    We should ban talk radio, since talk radio won't shut up when you get into an accident, and it takes as much attention as a phone call.

    Games haven't gone up in price except on the 360.

    Ocarina of Time was $69 on the N64. No game that I know of has been more than $49 on the gamecube.

    PC games are still around $49 when they come out.. only a rare few have been $59.

    A lot of games are coming out even cheaper.

    When Virginia Tech built its first cluster, the big news was how absurdly inexpensive it was in relation to other systems.


    That's because they neglected to mention that Mellanox donated 1100 Infiniband adapters to Virginia Tech. That's $3.3 million in free hardware. No wonder it was so inexpensive!

    Do I still need to jump through ridiculous hoops to get mp3 support in rhythmbox and get *any* support in totem?

    Out of the box, Totem can't play *anything*.. completely useless.

    At least make it like Ubuntu, where I can add a repository that has all the stuff they can't ship in the box.

    Gyroscopic controllers aren't new, and they've failed in the past for exactly the same reason --- they're too tiring to use.


    Guitar Hero's controller is tiring to use.. especially since you can't really use it well sitting down.

    That doesn't prevent it from being one of the more popular PS2 games in the past 6 months.

    Maybe playing a video game for 5 hours straight isn't such a good idea after all.

    We also had a lot of people who were quite capable of editing, designing motion graphics and compositing, who couldn't afford to produce a film before Apple brought the capabilities of million-dollar systems down into an under-$3K package.


    Combustion is $1K... and a great deal better than Shake.
