I upgrade by reinstalling, then putting backed up files back on. I've learned I usually have less problems that way.
It flaked out while setting partition mountpoints . After formatting and setting/, I had two other partitions I wanted to set, a/root and/boot. Setting the last one (either/root or/boot, didn't matter) would trigger something, and the installer would exit with a message about not being able to access some file. (obviously I don't have the exact message in front of me:)
I've used Linux for about 6 years, and although I'm no guru, I've gone through many installs of every major distro on quite a few different machines. This time, upgrading from Slack 8.1, I got bad vibes from the start. The installer flaked out on me during partition setup, having to get the kernel sources separately is annoying (particularly since I have to have them to install Nvidia drivers) and overall I got the feeling that the whole thing was just slapped together. This is disapointing since the creator of Slackware went to the same college I did. (Go Dragons)
So I downloaded Mandrake 9.1, installed it, and I haven't had a problem.
Since I'm ranting about ease of use anyway, and maybe using my Imac is starting to jade me, but I'm getting tired of running./configure, chasing down libraries, fixing compiler errors, and such in order to setup programs. I like being able to download a program and just click the bastard to run. I do seriously hope that along with the 2.6 kernel and a more desktop-friendly outlook, more developers will make thier programs more friendly to install for the average joe.

And in other news: Today, April 12th, is cosmonauts day, Yuri Gagarin was the first man in space in 1961.
Have you listened to Art Bell? Bruce Williams? Paul Harvey? All of their shows are polluted with more advertisements than ever before. In fact, I believe there's more advertising time than "show" time in these programs. Listen to Paul Harvey's "Rest of the Story" tomorrow, he'll talk a full minute about Gold Bond, another about some bed, and spend another minute during an advertising break, and the show is only 5 minutes long!
I live in central Minnesota, USA. Our average high temperature this time of year is about 9 degrees F. Yesterday it was 55 degrees F. I know full well one warm winter does not global warming make, but we've had several bizzarely warm years lately. We're s--tting where we eat and it worries me.
Yes, we have had some warm winters, and they're probably going to get warmer (I live in Minnesota as well) But temps have been rising since the 1880s. And if you ask your meterologist instead of the paranoid scizo on the corner, you'll find that this area is comming out of a period of very cold weather. That's why so many of the record lows (like a few days ago, when the record was 57 degrees below zero in 1887) are from decades ago. Even the massive storms we had in 96 are nothing compared to what was experienced by our grandparents when they came to this part of the country.
Global warming is a reality, but it's caused naturally, with industry only slightly helping.

Nausicaa is indeed Miyazaki's best work. But the movie is absolutely nothing compared to the 4 book graphic novel. The story is part sci-fi, part fantasy. It's an epic journey of discovery along the lines of the "Rama" books, but has some of the harsh emotional undertones of the "Thomas the Unbeliever" series.
That all blank CD's purchased already carry a royalty that goes to the RIAA.
That's a perfect example of the hypocracy being spewed forth from these corporations.
Are others in parallel Universes doubles of me..
or am I a double of some other true self?

I'd love to get a TIVO for radio.

I don't see anything "pop-culture-esqe" about it.

all in all, pretty damn good.

Like,
California not prosecuting medical marijuana users
Politicians not accepting special-interest money
Tech companies switching to low-cost solutions like Linux
Professors grading on performance instead of attendance (pet peeve)
Too many of the "normal" ways of doing things are questionable. It's not a sad state of affairs when people do what's right instead of what's normal.

I know I'm browsing at 3, but did someone miss this?
Source code for Linux Kernel(CD) -------- US$20.00
It can't cost that much to produce the CD, so what are they charging for?

In the final for my Western Humanities class the professor used an example from The Simpson to show the role of the family in society...
Homer: Sometimes I think we're the worst family in town
Marge: Maybe we should move to a larger town?
--The Simpsons "Theres no disgrace like home"
