Tack Yoshi's Island: Super Mario World 2 onto that list as well. If only for the unique graphic style it used.

Also, Mother 2 (aka Earthbound) had some neat changes to the jRPG formula (most of which haven't been seen since [to the best of my knowledge])... Trippy backgrounds, pizza delivery, "analog dial" hitpoints, auto-combat resolution against weak enemies, etc.

Yeah, and that really started with Yoshi's Island having Shy Guys (and many varients) as the main baddies. I think the jumping was solidifed by Super Mario Advance and then Super Smash Brothers Melee drove it home.

Oddly the retconned elements seem to work somehow with the core franchise.

From what I've read on Wikipedia, the All-Stars versions of Mario 1 and Lost Levels have a "floatier" jump, which I guess means there's less control of the jumping or something. I don't ever remember noticing that, but it's been a long while since I played either version, and I'm going to bet you'd have to play both side by side to actually notice something like that.

And has been stated above, this has been common knowledge since Mario All-Stars. Not to mention that Nintendo had a small brief on the game in their "Mario Mania" hint guide for Super Mario World.

What next? A review for "Final Fantasy Plus": The US SNES version of FF5 that never got here?

I'd rather have seen a review for the cd-i mario games than this. At least those are truly obscure. *cringe*

I'm surprised THIS is newsworthy, while an updated version of "Out of this World" isn't.

I can agree to this on some level. I remember Jet Moto 2 having Mountain Dew billboards on the sides of the track, or racing games with billboards on the track walls. I remember Parasite Eve 2 had a couple of coca-cola references, notably a few soda can machines and like one item bearing the coke label (I believe it was a keychain with a coke bottle cap attatched to it).

In my mind, stuff like that is fine. It's not obtrusive or in my face. Heck, You Don't Know Jack's online game had commercial breaks for stuff on the internet, but that worked wonderfully for the game since it was a "game show" and the ads offset the hosting costs. That was a wonderful use.

What I will not agree with is stuff like the recent Counter-strike Subway mod snafu. If that's where this is heading in the long run, I will greatly enjoy avoiding any game involving advertising, and if this forces me to stop playing commercial games, then I'm quite sure I will find enough indies games to play. Otherwise, I have a nice collection of games dating back to the NES to choose from.

Anyone remember 2-3 years ago when the Gamecube wasn't doing so hot and everyone thought Nintendo was going to go down the tubes after the DS has a lukewarm reception? Remember the articles suggesting the MS buyout of Nintendo?

Do we all remember where those rumors went?

In all fairness to Sony, like most industry rumor rags, this article completely and totally forgets to look at the other Sony divisions. Even if the PS3 is gonna tout a $500 price tag, they can probably afford to sell at a loss for a large period of time, and that really depends on how strong their launch is. For a while Sony was one of the leading manufacturers of TVs prior to the introduction of HDTVs. Sony still has a strong amount of brand name recognition that they can ride on for quite some time. Everyone here seems to forget that the average joe never knew about the Sony BMG rootkit schtick. Want proof? Try this: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=Sony+DRM+ 2005+site%3Acnn.com&btnG=Search Nothing on CNN. Further proof: http://news.google.com/news?hl=en&ned=us&ie=UTF-8& q=Sony+Rootkit&scoring=d&sa=N&start=60 No mainstream news ever really carried the story or the aftermath.

Let's also keep in mind that Sony is more about personal electronics and MS is really about software. The only convergence the two really have is SCE and Microsoft Game Studios. I could see maybe MS taking over SCE, but I don't think that'll happen.

Why does everyone think that MS is sitting on some magic pot of gold? If they have enough money to buy Sony, and Sony to me seems like the larger company (and probably has been around a lot longer), shouldn't Sony be the one buying MS?

Well a good portion of what they're going to have available is going to be 3rd party stuff, however if they bring over all the first party games from the first three consoles you're looking at around 150-200 games just from Nintendo. That's an awful lot of games people have to choose from on launch day, not to mention the fact that hopefully people will get to demo them before purchasing. And that's going to be a good chunk of profit for them.

Hearing about SD Cards and possible USB hard drive hook ups makes me glad. That's a smart move on their part, and hopefully it won't require some proprietary hardware that must be used (without modifications etc.)

When they announced that they were going to have downloadable content (for a minimal cost) I really wanted to believe that they were going to do that in addition to the then standard $50 price tag I associated with most games. Now I'm seeing that games are hitting $60 (Quake 4 for XBox 360 yet the PC Deluxe version was $50 and included Quake 2... you do the math) and there's still going to be pay-for content online? Throw a new HDTV on to that along with the cost of the console and you have probably the most expensive console gaming area setup ever (at least until the PS3 comes along).

I know the industry is in a flux stage and is trying to find ways to recoup costs on large budget games, but $60+ price tag for games is not the way to go. Especially when the core audience is teenage and college age males.

Unfortunately, having announced this before the Xbox was originally released and now with the XBox on its way to its deathbed I'm not entirely surprised to see this getting put on hold permenantly or for the next gen depending on which story you want to believe. With it's only target platforms getting phased out at the end of the year is not a good time to release especially if you want to get anything back on a title thats been in development as long as this has.

Let's not forget that its shifted development teams twice and then brought internal when they acquired the last development studio that was working on it. Also, I believe the gameplay and style was different at every E3 it was shown at (based on reports), which doesn't help either.
