  1. Glad Somebody's finally doing it.. on Carp-Free Independent Music Labels · · Score: 3, Interesting

Quite Frankly, the RIAA's business practices make me sick. It seems that they try to make money off of everything that we listen to, while squelching the alternatives that we might listen to through another medium. They seem to want to copy-protect everything, throw fair use out the window, and then charge everyone royalties for what amounts to them as free promotion. I hope more artists sign up for this.

  2. Customers not caring? Ha. on The Power of Palladium · · Score: 5, Interesting
The strongest part of Palladium will be its ability to determine whether a given software application should run on a machine. The system will be shipped with these functions turned off, but "we actually think it's likely that users will say, 'I'm only going to run code that's been signed,'" Biddle says. By "signed," Biddle means that the application has been cryptographically tagged by a "signing authority." The Palladium system would run the code only if the user has approved that specific authority

When Intel came out with the uniquely identifiable number in the Pentium III, of course customers didn't care, right? When I do have to run windows, and need to install drivers, things that aren't signed are generally the things that I need to use! Why in the world would I want any sort of chip that could possibly restrict this sort of thing. This could even be expanded to be "you can't run this code on your machine unless redmond has signed it"

I could sure use a new thinkpad. CdrTaco? Are you listening ;)?

  4. Microsoft had planned it originally.. on XBox + UltimateTV for $500 · · Score: 1

I happened to have gotten to talk to the guy that coordinated the XBox Project at Microsoft and he mentioned that the original idea included having PVR features, but they didn't have enough time to implement the feature and keep the release date. Another interesting fact is that X doesn't come from direct X..

  5. Re:And on behalf of everyone... on Peer-to-Peer Cell Phones? · · Score: 1

I agree there. It's already bad enough that people can steal people's phone calls, but then having to worry about the security of everyone's phone? Ick. And then what about if there are not enough phones to keep the link up? Does our call just magically drop into oblivion?

  6. Re:"Hotelling" on Sun Discovers Dumb Terminals · · Score: 1

Although it isn't necessarily cost productive, remember that we're looking at Microsoft here, the same company that pretended to make less than they really do. The cost element isn't really an issue in this scenario, though the productivity element in itself is still a very valid point.

  7. Re:soooo.... on Napster files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy · · Score: 1

yes, you're pointing to KaZaa as the new napster which is also under the legal fire of the *AAs. If you really want something, I'd suggest you go out and actually buy it instead of looking for some catch all program for all your "13337" needs. (As for the sheep..I dunno :P )

  8. Joy of the sims on "The Sims" Online, and on the PS2 · · Score: 2, Interesting

I think some people are missing the point. While the sims is a mediocre at best simulation of life, the fun part about it is that you have the ability to control whatever you want. You don't get that chance with life. You build up their little lives and completely wreck it to where it's worse than your own. I'm not sure how popular this will become on console though, but most everything can be done with pointing and clicking on the game.

  9. My Experience with it on MS Putting the Squeeze on Alternative Audio · · Score: 1

This was one of the things that used to piss me off about windows. You'd tell it "do not open things up in the browser" and it would happily ask you "do you want to open things up in ie". It made me want to break the damn thing. As for realplayer, I refuse to use realplayer one, and don't like the registration crap either. You can prevent having to type that in by searching for the registry key ERegistered and seting it to a nonzero value in versions of realplayer before the new one.

  10. Scared Me for a second there on CPAN Shifts Focus · · Score: 1

I went to the http://www.cpan.org page for the first time today (I'm a new linux user..learning about perl) and was very surprised to see that. I even checked the google cache and was relieved when I saw the real page. Good april fools joke :).

  11. Dangerous!? on Fuel-Cell Power With Methanol · · Score: 2, Funny

Haven't we been using stuff like lead-acid batteries for years...What's so dangerous about having to use another highly toxic product for our energy needs?
