What, are you this guy's best friend?

No, I just want him to know Linux has come a long way in the last year and nine months.

Come on, he was as rude as possible on the Ubuntu forums.

Was he? Perhaps it's my memory failing, but I was under the impression he was relatively calm until people started replying offering advice without even reading his post (something I've seen pretty often myself -- "I've tried *appX* but it didn't work, are there alternatives?" Idiot: "Have you tried *appX*?")

Feel free to cite evidence to the contrary -- I just want people to know that things are improving rapidly with Linux because I care about it.

    Um. Yes they do.

It's an accepted fact the PS3 costs more than $600 to make. The X-Box 360 costs more than $(whatever) to make, too. the PS2 originally cost more to make than they made back selling it. So does the PSP, or rather, so did the PSP. I'm not sure about it now.

They accept a hardware loss on the hopes of making it back through software (games) and marketshare. If they didn't, the PS3 would have came out costing like $800 and the 360 like $600.

At which point Nintendo would have had only one thing to say: LAWL! $_$

I've seen you post about this before, and the way the install and then problems after went with you is not acceptable. I'm sorry it went the way it did. From what I gather, the community has grown a lot since then, as well -- there are still the occasional jackasses, but they tend to be a vocal minority. Just thought I'd throw that out there as I tend to agree with your other posts -- your user name is very easy to remember.

Oh, I know after the SNES, Nintendo had a generation of idiocy. The N64, while it had a few good games, hurt them and they didn't recover until the Wii. I was a much bigger gamer back then, so I remember the idiocy. Had they switched to CD-ROM I probably wouldn't have purchased a Playstation, because like others, FF7 was the driving force in my PSX purchase.

Yamauchi sounds like just some old coot. You know, the crazy uncle who always has weird theories about "those people"? The best decision he made was appointing Arakawa to head NOA. Also, note that Yamauchi's asshole-quote is from 1999, when Nintendo was decidly lacking in RPGs. It sounds kind of bitter.

I'm not so sure anything old Nintendo did is worse than the things Sony and Microsoft have done. Maybe their game divisions haven't done things as bad, but c'mon, both of those companies have done some seriously awful stuff: Rootkits, Windows ME...

Some of Nintendo's policies in the past, like limiting games per year, had to do with avoiding a repeat of the crash. Others were just stupid legalese (suing over the Game Genie, for example) and every big company does stupid things with lawyers.

I went to Linux exclusively over a year and a half ago, but I'm not about to recommend it to most non-techies I know. Even when I've cleaned all the crap off of their computers that they accumulate in the form of spyware and viruses. I have no experience with Mac or any BSD variant, so I can't recommend that, either.

Warts and all, Windows is what most people know, and most aren't interested enough to learn anything new -- even if it's not complicated (which Linux can be). And by "warts" I mean "Zango and friends."

Besides... I like the non-techie admiration of my "genius" when I run AdAware and Spybot for them and get rid of spyware. It must be the feeling jocks get when they win a game.

I'm a little surprised they had the balls to bring a lawsuit about. Their hotbar apparently sends surfing habits back, they display pop ups, and it's somewhat of a bitch to uninstall -- my first question to their lawyers would be "So how are you NOT malware?"

Actually, a better comparison is NC-17 to R, not R to PG-13. Most movie theater chains won't show NC-17 movies -- it's a kiss of death from the MPAA. Since most retailers won't sell AO games, that's a good way to compare.

This Film Is Not Yet Rated is a pretty decent documentary on the MPAA ratings and board. There are a few times when I feel like they go overboard, but the general information about the ratings process and history was interesting.

I'd be interested to know how the ESRB comes to ratings conclusions. I mean I know "Violence" or "Sexual Situations" but I'd like to know how they judge them.

First, the Wii hasn't been out as long as the 360, and has apparently caught up to it in sales.
