Yeah, it is not even remotely possible that large areas of Asia will ever turn up something that contradicts the evolution pattern that anthropologist CURRENTLY think. Yes, it is a KNOWN deal that all that will ever be known about this is 100% found out.

Check your local university website for a Anthropology of Human Evolution(or similar) class syllabus, and then hit the library for the text they're using. It's probably covered in the first few chapters. There's a logic behind the 'out of africa' thinking that goes beyond finding a few bones.

  7. Re:excuse me... on Scientists Decry "Horrifying" UK Border Test Plan · · Score: 1

Actually, you assume that is true. There may be other evidence that comes along the way and destroys that. One of the issues with anthropology is that new evidence (mostly via Archaeology and new sciences such as DNA) comes along that shifts assumptions. For example, it was assumed for nearly 100 years that dinosaurs were cold blooded and only in very recent times is it being thought that they were warmblooded. It is quite possible that we will think in another 30 years that man originated in Asia because of new fossils found in say China, and then we figure that all men descended from that area.

If you'd take the time to find out why we say man came out of Africa, you'd know that it's not really something that's up for debate. (Hint: first ask what we mean by 'man')

Would you read an academic paper, or essay, which completely lacked sources and cites?

A valid point, but it ignores two facts:

    1) This isn't a paper or essay, it's an informal conversation.
    2) You're connected to the internet, the largest and most easily searched assemblage of knowledge in human history.

[citation needed] is a valid comment on Wikipedia because of the site's stated objectives and editing rules. The whole point, in a nutshell, is to provide citations for statements of fact. Casual discussions on slashdot and elsewhere do not come with this sort of baggage or requirements, although they're certainly helpful. I wouldn't say that there is an onus on either of us to provide links or research links, but this entire conversation is certainly less useful than it could be. Lazy and argumentative is a powerful combination =)

That's a valid concern, but I think it's a bit outdated. For several reasons:

    Most research begins online
Most papers and presentations are done on computers
Email is superior to a xeroxed (I almost typed mimeographed =p) handout for communication with students and parents
Organizational programs (Like MS Onenote, one of the few things they've got very right) exist for many different learning styles

And, finally, most school districts have very savvy IT departments. This might seem counterintuitive given the number of "my school did something foolish with computers" articles you see on slashdot and elsewhere, but if you've ever been an admin you know that the only time you're ever noticed is when things go wrong. A handful (or even a hundred) of negative reports should tell you that there are thousands and thousands of well run shops ticking away out there.

"those people" are usually undercover policemen. The cops generally do not want peaceful demonstrations, since they reduce control options. You can hand-carry each individual non-violent protester from the ground to a waiting van, or you can get one of your guys to throw a brick from within their ranks and bust out the tear gas and water cannons. It's easy to do, effective, and practically impossible to stop.
