  3. Re:Of course... on Intel: No Rush to 64-bit Desktop · · Score: 1

The point of this is 64Bit on the desktop, where IMHO register/databus size is more important than address bus size.

The 36Bit address bus of the G4 and Xeon cpu is probably enough for desktop/workstations giving 64Gigs of addressable ram.

The 'average' user doesn't run huge databases nor have requirements for >4gig working sets, thats not to say they wont in the future. At the moment however, they do have a requirement for processing larger chunks of data in one go - think image editing, movie processing, mp3 encoding, all could be accelerated with more register bits available to process that data, (as I've already said IA32 and PPC G4(MPX bus) cpus already have 64bit data buses)

The rapid acceptance of SIMD instructions is a testament to this, proving if you provide more horsepower to a CPU people will find a use for it. Quite rapidly too.

  4. Re:Of course... on Intel: No Rush to 64-bit Desktop · · Score: 1

you do realise its not just about the address bus, but about the register size and databus which are much more important (in terms of both large calculations done in a single instruction and the amount of data that the cpu can fetch from memory in one go) I know Pentiums and PowerPC (MPX) have 64Bit Data buses, and the G4 has a 36Bit (64Gig of ram) address bus. But when they talk about 64Bit CPUs' they aren't talking about address busses.
